If the Osu Ibos didn't plot the first coup against Nigeria because the Fulanis outsmarted them in the game of politics after forming coalition with them, Nigeria would still be operating a true federalism system.

If the Osu Ibos hadn't killed other regional leaders in the coup except the Ibo leaders, there wouldn't have been counter coup and 'suyanisation' of the Ibos in the North.

If the Osu Ironsi didn't make the unitary decree and had brought the coupist under trial, our true federalism would have stand.

If Osu Ojukwu didn't invade and attack the midwest, Ore and kept bombing Lagos, Awolowo could have helped the stupid greedy man.

If the Osu Ibos didn't support the corrupt Shagari in our new democratic system, Awolowo would have brought back our federalism system. Awolowo's passport (along with the passports of other prominent Nigerians) had been seized by the Buhari government.

Awolowo needed to go for a medical checkup in the UK and Babangids ordered that his passport should be returned to him. I can't remember for sure, but I think he also ordered that the presidential jet should be used to fly him to the UK.

Awolowo went to Dodan Barracks to thank Babangida when he came back from the checkup. I watched it on the NTA News in 1986. The NTA interviewed Babangida and Awolowo in front of the council chambers at Dodan Barracks.

Awolowo said he was there to thank Babangida, while Babangida said that Awolowo was a national treasure. Then Chief Awolowo and HID got into their car (a W100 Mercedes 600) and drove off.

A few weeks later it was announced that Awolowo was dead. I remember that the newspapers said that he had a smile on his face when his body was found. Virtually all the newspapers used black mastheads in his honour. Many people paid tribute to him (I think that was the time that Ojukwu said that Awolowo was the best president that Nigeria never had).

There were actually 2 days of holiday. I woke up early on the first day and tuned to OGTV. They kept showing an old documentary of Awolowo from the 1960s in a loop. I think that they were waiting for live signals from the NTA. The song, "Were Lo Ba Wa Se" was in the documentary and I think that was the first time that I actually got the lyrics, because they kept playing it over and over from 7am until 9 or 10am.

The first day was the lying in state. Babangida ordered that the body should be in a glass casket so that everybody could see it and it was carried on an open top police Land Rover (also so that the crowd could see it).

The lying in state was at the National Stadium in Lagos and the casket was carried on the back of Land Rover through the streets. There were huge crowds on the streets.

Babangida was at the lying in state, as were the governors of the LOBOO states (Lagos, Ogun, Bendel, Oyo, Ondo). Babangida was the first to file past the coffin and very many others filed past it. I remember seeing a little boy in a scouts uniform march past the casket and salute as he got close to it.

The person that got the biggest cheer from the crowd was Baba Salah. He entered the arena with exaggerated weeping and he also went past the coffin.


The second holiday was the day of the funeral. My brother severly criticised the NTA on that day. The picture quality was terrible and my brother asked how the NTA planned to broadcast the Under 17 World Cup (which Nigeria planned to host in 1991) to the world if they couldn't broadcast clear pictures from Ogun State.

The Chief of General Staff (military vice president), Admiral Aikhomu, led the Federal Government delegation to the funeral.

I also remember all the crazy rumours after the funeral. Some people said that Awo's brain was taken to the Soviet Union, while his heart was taken to another country.

NB Not all Yorubas are cowards. In 1966, the coupists had offered to spare Lt Col Fajuyi since he was not their target, but being the gallant soldier that he was, he refused, saying instead that as Ironsi was his visitor (Ironsi had been on an official tour of Western Nigeria when he was killed), it was his duty to protect him. And so, Col Fajuyi followed his commanding officer Ironsi, an Igbo man, to his grave.
In the same vein, not all Igbos are brave, did Ifeajuna (the mastermind of the Jan 15 coup) not flee to Ghana after it was crushed by Ironsi?
