Update: 15-year-old nursing mother married off to man with down syndrome in Anambra has been returned to her parents
15-year-old girl, Miss Chinwe, that was recently married off to an older man, Izuchukwu Igwilo, from Anambra state, has been rescued.
Last week, there was a public outcry on all media platforms after photos from the introduction ceremony of Chinwe and Izuchukwu surfaced online.
Activist, Prince Harrison Gwamnishu, who championed the course for Chinwe to be rescued, gave an update on Saturday. According to the Gwamnishu, Chinwe who is 15 going on 16, has a six-month old baby and she has been taken back to her parents' house. He also stated that on Monday February 4th, she will be officially handed over to the Anambra state Ministry of Women Affairs.

It is not a crime to have a child at tender age, but it is a crime to allow a 15 year old baby to be saddled to a SUPER-SPECIAL NEED man who is old enough to be her grandfather. It is outrightly wicked, child abuse and child labour.

You cant categorically claim that man is old enough to be her grandfather. People with special needs looks older and even if he is older their brain is like that of a toddler.

What we should be concerned about is that girl is marrying a baby instead of a man and how she is going to take care of an infant and adult-baby.

Do they intend to follow this up to ensure the girl remains with her parents? If the dust settles, she could be sent back to her husband. From my understanding, If a lady's bride price has been paid in that part of the country, the family owns her except the bride price is returned.

Hmm. This matter get k-leg. Only if the ministry will work on making the girl lose contact with the man completely and the man's family and also ensure that the family of the lady don't intimidate or try to send the lady back to the man. The lady might personally be happy with the marriage hence might not even like the ministry intervention. If the ministry don't keep to their promises with the lady as well, the lady can run go meet the man. I rejoice with her for the separation if it's actually her wish.

exactly the same thing dat came to my mind...I don't support underaged marriage.but that lady look older than 18 and he story went haywire because the man has down syndrome,which is discriminatory.

Very impressive to see this happen.

No girl child should be sent out of the house or be sold just because of poverty.

No girl child should be abused or be made a scapegoat because of lack of money.

A girl child is not an avenue to make money.

I'm happy she's back to her parents and I hope the same people that made this move would also clamour for some sort of financial support for the family.

His family said he is 25 years old, people with down syndrome can appear far older than they are, read about them and don't degrade them.
The issue is that his family should get him an older woman and not a child as wife
