wanger50:Ask the white missionaries of today why none of them has any free university today. I think that is the logical comparison. All the Catholic universities I know in the US are severely expensive. |

Alexk2:You are free to attend public universities. I hope u know ASUU just went on strike because of funding of universities. Funding of education is not cheap. I have degrees from a public university in Nigeria and others from Universities abroad. The difference in standard as well as cost cannot be quantified. |

What is "outrageous" about the fees posted? University education is very expensive. Ordinary private primary and secondary schools sef, some of them charge up to 10 million a session. Some of the cheapest private secondary schools you'll see in Lagos charge over N100,000 a session. We better stop deceiving ourselves in this country if we want to improve the education sector. Covenant University is even cheaper than what I expected them to be charging. |

I have seen this over and over again. I have a few words. Education is completely Godly but separate from the church. Why? Alot of Muslim students attend these schools. Now look at it as a normal private university. The funds invested and interest made are all part of a business plan. If the problem is the high rate of fees, then the solution must be a balance with the quality of education including the standard of all facilities provided. Education is worth it but the world after graduation raises all these questions because of lack of jobs. Nigeria will be great again. |

HigherEd:Bros, Ur reasoning is twisted. Anyway, I recognise Ur Monika as a well known praise singer of the money churches and their deeds, whether right or wrong. Arguing with u is totally pointless. But the dude u replied is right. It does not make sense to build universities that can't impact on the lives of many because of the high tuition costs. I am convinced that 90% of these church universities are built just to stroke the ego of the church leadership. It has become a status symbol for big churches to own universities. Nonsense |

HigherEd:oga, expensive is relative. Average starting salary for a graduate in the US is 75000 dollars a year. Someone who earns that much won't see 10,000 dollar tuition fee as outrageous. Not to mention the availability of student loans that make things easy. So do you still feel that education is Soo expensive for those who live in the US? It costs them money agreed, but it is still within the range of what an average middle class worker can comfortably afford to spend on his kids without stealing. Can u say the same about the fees in covenant University and co? Can a state civil servant on level 15 comfortably train even one child in covenant University? And u can barely call a level 15 officer middle class, he is rather upper class!! |

HigherEd:Lol, not all, I have alot of friends that finished and had a job there immediatly. Courses matter too, so when going abroad, don't just go for styding sake, but going there to study better course and be employed. |

Too much of a fee, if I have such outrageous fee, I would rather find a better uiversity for my kids abroad to school. It cost more to school abroad. The cost for visa, international passport, tuition fee, accommodation and feeding is more than enough to pay for tuition and accommodation fee in a private university in Nigeria. Assuming your child decides to work, his or her may not cover for the cost of school fee assuming all things been equal. Mind you students are allowed to work for 20 hrs per week in many countries or cities abroad. You would still need to send more money to assist your child over there if the need arise. And still yet, after spending such amount of money, they leave them to their fate to go and look for job and still bring the money back and enroll for their postgraduate studies. What you fail to understand is the fact that many Nigerians that schooled abroad are in Nigeria roaming round the street in search of job. This has nothing to do with whether they attended a public, private or international universities. I had an oportunity to be interviewed with a former colleague who finished in CU then for a job of 45k as a call centre agent.Education is expensive. That many attended subsidized schools doesn't mean they wouldn't experience the hardship melted on Nigerians by our leaders. Whether you attend private or public schools, you would face the labour market. These are facts starring at your face but you refuse to see them because of stereotype thinking and perception. |

obstead200:Lol you must be joking right. Who stopped anyone from taking student loans to attend Covenant? Saying an average middle class can afford US university means you don't know what you are talking about. The student debt in the US is $1.5 trillion. Meaning most are taking loans they can't pay till they die. |
| Re: Outrageous School Fees Paid By Church Universities In Nigeria by Ken4Christ: 6:06pm On Feb 16, 2019 |
EFX001:No one is asking for free tuition free but affordable tuition fee. I personally recommend anything between 100,000 and 200,000. I believe the returns will be enough to pay lectures. Attendance will triple if this is done. So, if the student attendance was 1000 for an average fee of 300,000 which will translate to 300 million naira in a semester. But if the tuition fee is 100,000 naira and attendance is 3000, it will translate to the same amount. This is what we call turn over in economics. If they won't come that low, I will do it in the very near future. God help me. |

98% of those arguing that the members cannot attend are just basing on pure sentiment. It is called a private university for a reason. Its just like working in the private sector. Or being an entrepreneur. U bag the responsibility of the running cost. There's no funding from the government No subsidy. Running a university damn expensive. Let alone raising its standards. No truely organized church builds a school solely for its members. They build to solve a need. And this case the rot in our tertiary system. The hike in fees is needed to keep the vision of the standard they had in mind before the school began simply because they are self funded. |

NairaMaster1:Lol. Mine was four years and two months cause Of 2013 ASUU strike. Since we all have a fair idea about ASUU strike, people tend to take the easy route to avoid unnecessary delay hence their urge to patronise private universities. If you can afford it, then go ahead. It's pretty simple. |

obstead200:salary is good but Is job opportunity guaranteed? No. Over there people pay well for skill acquisition with loan and they are more ready to work with their skill to : 1. repay their loans 2. help the society grow. but here in Nigeria, people who know they will end up as high class prostitutes and ritualists are ready to bribe their way into federal schools with as low as N150k in order to enjoy FG subsidy of over N1 million per student. At the end of the day, the chance to train people like lab attendants, skilled farmers, and engineers who would have helped the society grow and be better will be lost to certificate chasers who have wasted govt time, space and millions. The loan system will reduce the scourge of idleness after graduation. |
