I know it's been like forever since I updated. well, it's because I have been busy doing other things .

where do I start from... remember how Ira did not whelp the other time? Well, when she came on heat we decided to do everything right by the book. We did a swab test and the test came back positive for some disease. the treatment was to be done 2 to 3 days before mating and it was in form of injection for 3 days.

Her first injection was on a Sunday and the vet won't be open so I was forced to learn how to administer the injection myself.

Mating was successful as we had ties on both occasions. we used the same male we have been using since inception. (if it's not broken why change it).

I didn't wanna update till she whelps cos I didn't want my village people to jinx it. But I was moved to do otherwise today cos I just want to vent and document.

it's day 61 of mating today and milk is here but her tummy is not bulging (dejavu) but I am optimistic there are puppies in there.

Her energy level has been pretty high all through even though she was chained through out. Appetite, top notch

It's not eba even though she will gladly eat if I serve her. it's homemade food. Corn, gnuts, and eggs combo.

Well Isis came on heat about 2 wks ago at 1yr 2months. it was a shock to us since we were expecting her to come on at about 18months just like her mama. We had decided we would not mate if she comes on before she clocks 18months.

we were observing her as she became very territorial and would not let Zeus anywhere near her. She was always chancing and bullying him that we had to put his food far away from her. You can imagine our shock when we woke up at 6am one morning, opened the front door and no dog came to welcome us. I was scared something had happened to them. On turning around, there they were tied (this should be like 5 days into the heat). it was still dark so I could not take pictures and we had to go do our morning devotion.

After the incident, we decided to let nature take its course. the hostility of Isis toward Zeus increased and we never saw them tied again. If this mating results in pregnancy fine for me (it's been long since I heard the cries of puppies) and if she does not get pregnant, my hubby will be very glad so it's a win win situation.

Ofcourse they can. it depends on how u manage and train them. I have seen where even dogs and cats live in harmony.

hi there! Remember I mentioned I caught Isis and Zeus kissing... well, we decided to keep her restricted. at day 40, I didnt notice any changes, no bulging tummy, no milk in, etc so I decided probably zeus shot blanks or the timing was not right. We let her go to mingle and play rough with the other 2.

It was busines as usual until day 60 when we noticed black purge in places where Isis usually went. We found her weak and lethargic. she could barely walk and was throwing up I thougt she had parvo but did not see blood in her stool.

When I went to my garden, I noticed the chicken manure I kept the day before was not as it was. I knew immediately that was what she ate.

So I decided to pet and palpate her and that was when I felt a movement. I pressed on her nipples, dry but the third had milk yayyyyy!!!

De hydration and Overheating in dogs

Dehydration and over heating could be serious if left untreated. Recognising early warning signs is important to the health of ur dog

Dehydration

This is a process where body fluids is excessively lost. Dehydration involves the loss of water and depletion of electrolytes, which include some essential minerals. It could be caused by illness or lack of availability of water.

Signs of a dehydrated dog include sunken eyes, dry mouth, gums and nose.

Poor skin elasticity is another dehydration symptom, which u can test by gently pulling up on the skin at the back of ur dog’s neck. If the skin doesn’t immediately spring back to its normal position, ur dog may be dehydrated.

The longer it takes for the skin to return to its normal position, the more severe the dehydration.

Another test u can perform at home is called capillary refill time. Press ur finger against ur dog's gums until they turn white, then remove it. If the gums don’t regain color immediately, ur dog could be dehydrated.

Since untreated dehydration can lead to organ failure and death, seek immediate vet attention if dehydration is suspected.

Depending on the severity, ur vet may suggest water with electrolyte products. In extreme cases, intravenous fluids will be administered to replenish ur dog's fluids.

Overheating

Heat-related dog conditions can also become life-threatening without immediate treatment.

Overheated dogs can suffer heat exhaustion, heat stroke or sudden death from cardiac arrhythmias.

Panting, followed by disorientation and fast, noisy breathing could signal overheating. Other possible signs: Collapsing or convulsing, bright red or blue gums, vomiting and diarrhea.

Plz when ur travelling long distance with ur dog in the car watch out for over heating. Dont walk ur dog under hot sun. These situations can make a dog become dangerously hot, u should watch ur dog closely for overheating signs.

If you suspect ur dog is overheated, wet him with cool water before heading to the vet.

ur vet may apply alcohol to the ears, foot pads and groin to safely lower the temperature, as well as administer cool IV fluids.

For serious overheating, ur dog may need a breathing tube and artificial ventilation.

Simple precautions can ward off dehydration and overheating.

To help prevent dehydration, offer dogs water at least once every two hours. Avoid keeping them in hot cages. Let their houses be well ventilated. Avoid walking them under the sun like i said ealier.

help ur dog beat the heat by encouraging resting and drinking at his leisure.

Your post is so heart warming. Thanks for it. I love those small breeds too. Will surely get one before I am old and grey(lol) and when I have enough room in my house. Getting one is not a bad idea but you will have to train them(it) since you are barely home. You can use the weekends to bond.

I know this amazing lhasa, her name is Sheila. Oh dear she behaves just like a human child and is super friendly. I always use this expression when I see her human, `I need me some Sheila in my life`. She is an energy ball, fun loving and sweet. She lives indoors and is potty trained as well.

All the best.

Hmmm. Sorry for the long silence. It's because I have issues with my phone. I don't see the pictures I snap and when I used another camera, I could not upload, the size was too large.

I am not a fan of long posts without picture but I need to break the silence...

So after the first day we noticed Isis could be carrying, the next day, she was back to her normal self barking all the time (just like Zeus, they are the annoying duo). Isis and Zeus give us (excluding me though cos I can sleep for Africa lol) and the neighbours sleepless nights unless we lock Zeus up in his cage.

I would wake up to the sound of the dogs barking praying and wishing not to hear Isis voice but she always disappointed me. Anytime I left the house and came back, I would be checking to see if there were puppies around her of anything unusual but nothing. (the disappointment no be for here) One would have thought I should be used to this by now but that's not the case. I spent most of my time at home with her. Days 61,62,63,64 came and Isis was her gallant old self.

Then on day 65 in the morning, Hubby came to tell me it's possible Isis is in labour. I still smile as I remember the feeling. I guess it's similar to how grandmothers and possibly fathers feel at such times.

Be careful When Giving ur Dog a Bone

Sometime ago people do not really care when giving their dogs bones from Sundays dinner left over's. Today’s dog owner are much more knowledgeable about dog nutrition and realizes that the watchword about bones is: caution.

Bones are a good source of minerals and other nutrients and help satisfy ur dog’s appetite. Chewing stimulates saliva enzymes and helps prevent plaque buildup on teeth and gum disease. And a dog chewing on a bone is less inclined to excessively scratch or lick his paws.

It’s critically important, however, to avoid giving ur dog the wrong kind of bone.

Poultry bones and pork bones, or cooked bones of any kind, are should be strictly forbidden. They can scatter in smaller pieces that can cause choking and serious damage to the dog’s mouth, throat, or intestines.

Cooking can also remove nutrients from the bone.
Any bone, in fact, once chewed into small pieces, can block the intestines and lead to constipation, can cause lacerations of the mouth and internal organs, or can lodge in the throat with fatal results.

Many vets say that raw meat bones are the best bones for a dog.

It’s best to give a bone to ur dog after a meal. So as to avoid the ingesting too much bone as a result of hunger.

If ur dogs hides bones and later bing it out to chew plz dispose of a bone after three or four days.

Large breeds such as German Shepherd Dogs and Mastiffs should be given large bones as adults. Bones should be larger than the length of the dog’s muzzle so it will be impossible to swallow whole.

Supervision is important. Periodically check on ur dog when he’s chewing a bone.

For puppies less than 3 months plz avoid bones of any type. U can get them a plastic toy bone to chew on.
