The Visionscape bond has the following defects

1. It is not a green Bond. Not backed by FGN
2. At 15.75%, it's not the next big thing
3. It was a private placement and not sold to the public so you will hardly find people like us here investing in it
4. Since it was a private bond, there is very little the SEC can do about it since the general public was not involved
5. It was only offered to qualified investors by private placement. The guys in the club nurse their problems
6. because it was private placement, the transaction was therefore not subject to the prior review and approval of the commission and does not fall within it's regulatory review
7. The contract of Visionscape was revoked by the Lagos assembly and given to PSP operators without sympathy from Lagosians. Remember this is one of the reasons Ambode fell out with political gladiators in Lagos State.
8. The bond did not get the backing of the Lagos assembly and was not gazetted into law to transcend leadership changes, so investors will wait for the next government of Lagos to help them out

NOTE

this cannot happen to a federal government bond, savings bonds or the SUKUK or Treasury bills. These have the backing and full faith of the federal government of Nigeria. These also transcend leadership changes at the top.

@manlikeegb I hope this answers your question too.

Thanks sir.

SUKUK is scarce though. People are not selling according to my own broker. I even called TRW stockbrokers Ltd. They only have about 2m-3m of the bond left for sale. Then, the penalty that comes with not holding the bond to maturity sound extreme. Really can't remember how he explained it. So I don't think its an option for me right now.

thank God i locked when rate was at 14%

Lucky you.

For someone like me, I couldn't lock in at the time because my last TB investment will just mature tomorrow March 14th.

Now here's the dilemma, as of right now, I can still contact my investment company to roll over(this will lock into today's auction). This would mean that I would be getting something in the region a little below whatever the stop rate of the auction today is, which is expected to drop even lower compared to the last stop rate.

Seniors in the house, what would you suggest.

-Should I roll over and take whatever the interest rate is like that?
-Should I lock in for secondary market after today's auction for a short tenor - say 90days - then hope that interest rates would have picked up by the time the 90day investment matures, and I can then go long.

I'm just confused, and I don't want to lose much because I have already been calculating the interest I would get with rates of as at 2 auctions back until the election outcome hit it on the head. The difference in the interest I could have gotten if the rates remained in the region of 14% - 14.5% and now 13%(speculation) is hurting so much.

Over to the seniors and everyone, please advice. Thanks.

I got these secondary market rates from access bank and GTB bank today.

Access Bank: 9,10.5,and 12 % for 50,176, and 260 days respectively.

GTB: 10.7, 12.00 and 12.40% for 92, 183 and 351 days respectively.

Can the next primary window rate be above 14% for 363 days?

1. There is only so much debt the country can keep accumulating due to rates as high as 17%.

2. Now, the stock market will have a chance to grow.

3. People might actually be incentivized to start a business, and employ people.

If I had 10 billion naira. What do you think I will do? Buy Tbills at 17% ? Invest in the stock market? Or create businesses?

We all know the answer to that. I know a friend who has talked to some private businesses and their earnings is not doing better than Tbill rates.

I agree to the first two points. clearly excessive rates are not sustainable - unless we want to end up with a giant Ponzi scheme.

However, the third point is what should happen in theory, but not sure it applies to us. First, if TB rates decline, how many banks will lower their lending rates? And how many will even lend to upcoming SMEs who are the real drivers of the economy? Then of course you consider the very unfriendly business environment - power, infrastructure, etc

The few that will benefit from lower tbs are the Dangotes, Otedolas and Ubas

Am busy at the farm and I have low battery, do not listen to their staff asking you to go for abacus, just go for VGIf, once you lock in fund , is usually for a year, and the rate I show you on their site stand for the one year duration. , the rate is usually peg to the CBN, MPR, but I think it has been changed now to CBN, standard deposit rate or something, just stand your ground and do VGIF, as the rate is better than Abacus

You have a point though.

Some businesses will work others will fail. Being in Nigeria is already a disadvantage.

Hi...please i'm new to this TB. However, went to my bank (fidelity bank) to enquire and was told that i need a startup of at least 1m to buy TB. Currently, i have only 500k to spare. Is there a way out or any bank that accepts lower. Thanks in advance

I will put it down to a lot of demand for the longer dated Bills (364 days)....

Yes, because most of the banks failed in their last 364 days bids, hence there was high demand for 364 bills in today auctions by those yearning investors looking for longer periods .my analysis paid off, else i would have lost a fortune waiting for today auctions ,which might not even be successful and time lost will also amount to substantial funds too . I'm sure some banks bids for 364 days won't be successful today , so we should be expecting 11.8/12 in the secondary market henceforth.

Those of you who were planning to go and buy Treasury Bills from Ghana, lol! I hope you didn't do it?

Their currency had a sharp drop today and became one of the, if not the cheapest currency in Africa. Stick with the demon you know!

It is possible, contact your account relationship manager or call your bank customer service, they will put you through. Normally they will send you tbills form/s which you will complete and return back to them via email and you might be asked to send a letter to them via email requesting them to debit your account and invest same in tbills that's all (Sometimes your account need to have email idemnity before your bank can accept such letter i.e firstbank).
