All that "for better for worse, in sickness and in health", that people recite as marriage vows is unscriptural! It is a curse!

Gone are the days people were blindly led by certain ministers of God through wrong interpretations. I just want to ask how long ago the minister got married. Judging by the ages of his children one can safely say he has been married for over 35 years. If it is so I am of the opinion that he took the "for better for worse" oath. His wife has remained with him through all.

If that is accepted I believe that his marriage has had its fair share of all forms of challenges.

Jesus clearly told us about challenges and truly as he said the life is full of challenges, especially in the Nigeria of today.

Prospective couples should not be put of or misled by certain statements credited to influencial ministers. Marriages are not designed "for riches and for good health" only. Even the very wealthy suffer incurable diseases. In the event of health challenges should the man or the woman walk away?

God help us please.

Yet another question, were the Oyedepo's at one point in time, not rich as they are today ?

His wife was with him when he had nothing, he was with his wife when she was sick. This is the crux of the marital vow, it has nothing to do with curses.

Jesus said take up your cross aka your pains, sufferings, grief, difficulties, illness etc. and follow me. Mordern day christianity are trying desperately to push posperity gospel. A gospel were only happiness and enjoyment exists. this is a lie. Life is sweet because there is sadness. Life is a mixture of ups and downs, good and bad, joy and saddness. God is calling us to follow irrespective of life joys and sadness. Suffering or pains is part of your christianity. Early christians who just like us came after Christ resurrection endured great sufferings. e.g Paul. Why would Jesus subject himself to pain, fastings and sufferings if his messiahship was all about enjoyment and flexing. Mordern day christians are missing the point. There is nothing wrong with that vow! Its no curse! Its a commitment.

Except he doesnt understand english though undecided

It's funny because when Daddy Freeze made this same argument a few weeks ago, all the man worshippers we have here in the forum started calling him all sorts of names. Now, the same folks are lining up behind Oyedepo, even though he just copied from Daddy Freeze. An average Nigerian Christian needs deliverance because they are, in reality, worshipping men in the name of God!

While I love Daddy Oyedepo, I disagree with him on this one. Jesus himself told his disciples that: ...In this world ye shall have tribulations... (John16:33) Tribulations are an essential component of any Christian's spiritual growth. In the words of TB Joshua (another man I so love) In the university of GOD no matter how good you are you will take every course and never get double promotion. He further said: you will be praised, mocked, exalted, debased, taste the good as well as the bad in the school of GOD and I find comfort in his words when he said: You can be sick and still be a friend of GOD...you can be poor and still be a friend of GOD ...If a couple has not made ready their hearts and minds to stick together no matter the circumstance they will be swayed by their circumstances and make destructive decisions based on the circumstances they are facing... If marriage vows are a curse, then marriage itself is a curse. Marriage binds a partner as well as his or her mental, spiritual, financial and social baggages to one person he or she calls wife or husband and this bond is expected to remain so until death...Worse could be that your wife now looks terrible from repeated pregnancies. Worse could be that your husband cannot perform like he used to...If a couple is not ready for the better or worse of life they should forget about marriage!

Our View : Staying in marriage is all about COMMITMENT!
Commitment is a mindset . . . an attitude . . . a way of thinking that will enable you and your spouse to navigate through the still waters and the storms of a marriage for better, for best!

It takes longer than you planned
It costs more than you figured
It is messier than you anticipated
It requires greater determination than you expected
Sometimes the only thing that keeps us going is hope!

Commitment is especially important when we face the inevitable conflicts that come in any marriage (or for that matter any relationship). While many today write into their divorce documents, “Irreconcilable differences,”.
God calls us to a higher kind of LOVE to resolve these differences for better, for best!

GOD IS LOVE!!

Thank God election is gone, now, your sense is coming back from exile.

Kudos.

Hmmmmmmm, my own question is how does he preach the part of the scripture that says "what shall separate me from the love of Christ", I doubt you can preach that part without talking about life challenges and yes, it was referring to believers and not those that are yet to be saved.

Hmm I u understand why ministers of the faith movement, the likes of Hagin, Oyedepo and Copeland would thoroughly hate that line because most believe the redemption package doesn't permit Christians to be sick or poor in the first place. But the reality is that many Christians live short of God's desire for their divine health and financial prosperity. And you don't want a situation where marriages collapse because of money or health issues.

Therefore, that line though Unscriptural was a necessary innovation from the medieval church to bring marriage partners into a vow bound by death. To ensure that no one jumps ship when things get low - which in many cases it does. In doing so, the church has removed the option of divorcing your partner for circumstantial reasons and reinforced that it would not be part to relationships inspired by benefits only.

My reservation is when major ministries abandon that line it would further weaken people's commitment to lifelong marital covenants.

The only evil the church has been culpable in is not encouraging victims of marital abuse to separate from their abusive spouses - something the church must work on.

The vow should not be "for better for worse"

Instead it should be "through all time"

The suggestion you brought forward is very valid. I would like to add my 2 cents. To serve God, what he promised and guaranteed is entry into his Kingdom and all the goodies that follow. He blessed those who hunger and thirst for the Kingdom and all the beatitude blessings. Abraham served God for many years and yet was barren for a while, Paul and Silas and the various apostles and prophets were imprisoned for the sake of the kingdom of God. My dear, Jesus himself was killed.Remember that guy who told Jesus he had kept all the commandments and everything but when Jesus said give it to the poor and follow me, he bailed. God will always want to see what you like more, Himself or Money, Himself or your desires, Himself or that thing you really love. It is good to be rich, but he is more interested in giving us everlasting life, that unless you have that grace like a camel passing through the eye of a needle (possible with God), riches though good, make it more difficult to enter his kingdom.
I’ll explain that last point a little further. He said that some people will say ‘we performed miracles in your name’, yet he will tell them he never knew them. The ones that were let into the kingdom were the ones who gave food and water to the hungry, visited those in prison etc. I’m not saying riches are bad. No! I want riches myself, but observe poor people, really poor people, they often give the little they have, but the rich even though they could help a lot of people, find it hard (not all rich people) to.
In conclusion, serving God is not all roses. In prison and freedom, in shipwreckness and otherwise, in the times he performed miracles to the times he was standing trial, in sickness and in health, Paul served and loved God. As we are to Jesus, so is a bride to her groom, when they say in sickness and health, the point is through all, just like a person who loves God should act, through sickness and health, remain in love.

The challenges of life will surely come, whether clergy or laity, religious or not. They must come and we must pass through them. Nobody prays for it but they will. However, should I now use my mouth to call for it? NO.

The Scripture talks about long-suffering. Why would it talk about long-suffering if there would be no suffering at all?

That quote is true but many of us will think it to be he meant marriage will be all days of merry but not so.

The Bible never said that Christians will never fall sick. It's outright falsehood. If that is true, then you also should not die!

Does tme and chance not before us all including christians (Read Ecclesiastes 9:11-12)

Wasn't Timothy I'll? (Read 1 Timothy 5:23). Was not Apostle Paul frail and sickly? (2 Corinthians 10:10)

As long as we live in this world, we will always go through problems or trials as the Bible puts it. If Christian's never experienced problems. where is the test of their faith under fire?

Bible warned in latter days "people will not put on with the wholesome teachings but according to their own desires, they will accumulate teachers for themselves to have their ears tickled. They will turn away from listening to the truth and give attention to false stories (Read 2 Timothy 4:1-5)

Please don't be among that crowd!

It is only in the New heavens and a new earth in which righteousness is too dwell that will free all creation from sin, death and suffering (Read 2Peter 3:13 Revelations 21:3-5)
