Thank God I just stumbled on this topic. Gurus in the house your advices are needed please.

I intend to get a 2nd degree in the states. I have a 1st degree (B.Ed in computer science) here in Nigeria in 2017, but I didn’t have passion for what I studied, never wanted to become a teacher but UTME wahala. Now I want to change career path, get a 2nd degree in Pharmacy. I know it is totally different from what I studied before. I plan to apply as an int’l transfer student.

Please do you think it is possible to study something different from what I studied before & what are my chances of getting the visa?

Are there scholarships/funding for undergraduate programs?

Is it compulsory to take the standardized tests?

PS: my transcript & waec documents are under evaluation with WES

Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) in the US is done as a graduate professional programme. i.e., you need to have a (US) bachelors degree. That being said, there are many good pharmacy programmes that do not require a first degree. However, there are prerequisite courses that have to be taken (from a US school) to be eligible for admission into those programmes that do not require a first degree. In your case, you will need to complete the prerequisite courses from a US community college before applying (note that you also have to write and pass the PCAT exam which is the standardized test for pharmacy school). Now this is where it becomes tricky. Prerequisite courses have to be done in the US and to get entry into the US, do you apply directly to a community college or do you apply for a masters programme and then switch? You'll have to figure that out.

Another thing that you should consider is the cost of attendance for the Pharmacy programme. Most pharmacy programmes do not give funding and as an international student, your tuition fee may be higher (depending on the school) than a US student. Also, as an international student, you won't be eligible for government loans (which have subsidized interest rates). You can get private loans though (e.g. Sallie Mae) through a credit-worthy cosigner which have higher interest rates. The tuition and fees for a year of pharmacy school ranges from $30,000 to $65,000 and upward. Note that the tuition fee doesn't include money for your upkeep (cost of living) such as rent, feeding, etc. Most pharmacy programmes are for 4 years, but there are a few programmes that do 3 years (round the clock without any summer break).

With all I have written above, it may look very daunting, but it's very doable. The biggest challenge is getting to the US. In the US and with proper guidance (and hopefully, a relative that can provide accommodation to save cost), you can then begin to work on getting the prerequisite courses and writing your PCAT exam towards applying for admission.

Hi everyone, I was denied visa in January, so I deferred my admission but unfortunately I can't use the same sponsor I used in January, as I plan to go for another interview in may, I will like to know if I can change my sponsor and what kind of excuse I can give the Vo, cuz I think telling the Vo the real reason(money has been moved from the account) is not wise, please help

You can use a different sponsor than what you used in the previous denial. I did exactly that when I did my visa interview. For the first interview (which was a denial), I used my uncle and for the second interview (which was an acceptance), I used my dad. Most times, you are not asked about the change. The emphasis is on whether there's sufficient funds and the relationship of the sponsor to you. If you're still skeptical, you can request for a new form I-20 from your school stating a change in your sponsor, so that the name of your new sponsor will be on your I-20.

I'm a medical laboratory technician applying for F1 Visa (undergraduate). My current certificate is ND . I was 27 when I went for my 1st interview in Jan.

Given your age, going for an undergraduate degree may seem a tall order. However, given your profile, i.e., without a previous undergraduate degree, you can put your case forward as to why you're going for an undergraduate degree since you can't go for a masters programme. Give it one more shot, you never know. Alternatively, you can do a HND for the next 2 years and then apply for a masters programme with your HND instead.

applied to a school in USA already and their cut off score for that course is 291
Buh I recently wrote GRE again and I had 283 (8 marks difference)
Evaluated gpa- 3.27

Is it possible to still get the admission

Please can anyone recommend any other schools that offers Ms Construction management and will still offer admission with my GRE score/grade

submitting a business SOA that has some months of (-amount)due to overdraft, but all the loans got paid up and some money were added b4 i submitted.
Could it limit my chances for an admission or at the interview??

Truth is, no one can know if you will be offered an admission or not. The strength of the application cycle determines that. If students with stellar profiles applied for this application cycle, it will be difficult to get an admission. But if the application pool has applicants with moderate profiles, then you stand a chance of getting admitted.

Also, if you did very well in your core courses in your Building technology undergraduate programme (i.e. you had As in them), it may improve your chances.

Personally, I would not advice you to rush into applying to other programmes with your current GRE score. Wait to see the outcome of this application to determine if you will need to retake your GRE to improve your application profile for the next application cycle.

Well, ur GRE scores is really on d low side. But it is d hardest exam I ever wrote. So, i know tough it is especially when u didn't have enough materials. Unfortunately, everyone looks at d final scores, n not d condition under which some of us wrote d exam. However, that doesn't excuse d fact that u might be competing with other crazy GRE scores.

Most graduate programs call it the "sanity test," it doesn't really affect your profile but they just want to know that u sound.

As timottee has said, it depends on d quality of d school n d quality of applicants.

I will also add that d number of black/africans people applying to d same program might just help u get in based on diversity. Most schools don't just want their campus to b filled with Indians n Chinese no matter how brilliant they r.

if d school feels your profile doesn't measure to their standards, they won't just hand out admission just cos they want to fill a gap.

So yes, I know u want an answer, but the answer is neither here nor there.

Applying to more than one program would hv helped.

However I found one school for u

South Dakota State University

They have STRUCTURAL ENGINEERING n not construction management. structures is not that far off.

They will however need an evaluated transcript but u already done this

April 15 deadline

I contacted d civil department before, they will waive Toefl for Nigeria even if their website said otherwise.

Option 2
Texas A n M college station. April 15 deadline. U might stand an outside chance, who knows? Just be ready to cough out 60k naira for application fee.

It affects you if you're going to strategy/management consulting or investment banking. Some consulting firms like MBB, AT Kearney, BAH, Oliver Wyman (I think) look at your GMAT score. Yes, they prefer GMAT to GRE for those strategy consulting roles. Investment banks too do the same but if you network well, they might overlook it. Some of my MBA friends retook the GMAT either before they started their MBAs or during their first terms just before consulting recruitment started in October-December/January. Big 4 consulting firms do not really care about your GRE score. However, their consulting practices are not as prestigious as MBB.

Also for entry-level analyst roles, some consulting firms ask for SAT or ACT scores and for graduate students with no SAT scores, they usually seek for GMAT/GRE scores. However, your chances of an analyst position in top consulting firms is very slim for a graduate student with >1 year work experience.

But if you're targeting tech firms, they don't really bother about your GRE/GMAT and GPA. Big 4 consulting firms do not really bother about your GRE/GMAT.

That is the whole gist. It depends on your career path
