Hello everyone I have introduced myself earlier on this forum along with my profile I just want to get a quick analysis and review on my proposed transcript. I am a 25 years old graduate with 2 years work experience in the financial sector and a year experience in Logistics. I am going for Masters in Management and Supply Chain with concentration in Transport and Logistics.
Vo: GoodMorning pass me ur 1-20 and passport
Me: GoodMorning and I hand them over to her
Vo:Why do you need a masters degree
Me: The world is moving at a fast pace, Change, individual development and upgrade is a necessity in order to avoid the risk of becoming obsolete here in Nigeria.
Vo: Ok so why did you pick WSU(Wichita state University)
Me: 4 major reasons
1.I was fascinated by the Journal written my prof mehma Rodger who is an Associate at the university on the dynamic flow chain of goods and services along the sub Saharan Africa.
2.The university boasts of a world class teaching facility.
3.I got pointers from My cousin an alumnus who just started lecturing at the Uni of Illorin after completing his PHD at the university.
4. Ranked as one of the best schools in America with a Decent tuition fee perfectly fits within the brackets of my families Budget.

Vo:Ok Did you write any standardized exam
Me:yes TOEFL *giving him/her a copy of my Result with a score of 100/120
Vo: who is paying for your fees
Me: My father he owns Wimco Nig Ltd Deals with whole sale of Sanitary wares (Tiles, Toilet seats,Jacuzzis,Bath tubs)
VO: your visa has been approved, I hope you know that you can only travel 30days to the resumption date.
Me: yes thank You.

I would really appreciate everyone’s opinions. Very much aware of the God factor, confidence, Eye contact and starting ur answer with ur best points Incase the VO cuts u in.

Wow thanks for the swift response. I have nailed the program director and here's the response i got

You are correct, our department does not offer assistantships to students admitted on a provisional basis. There may be other assistantship opportunities available in other parts of the university, but that is not something I keep systematic track of. Sometimes students are successful in finding such outside assistantships on their own. I caution students against doing that most of the time because if they don’t make a B+ or better in each of their provisional courses, then they are not fully admitted into our MA program. I have observed some situations where a provisional student finds an outside assistantship but it takes up too much of their time and they don’t make the grades they need in their provisional coursework.
I hope this helps answer your question

This one na story anyway. How did u go about yours. Did u apply separately after you were given the admission? and pls can i dm you

ToluwalekeA:

Georgia state uni offers GA after admission. I got mine after i emailed the program director about assistantship. cheers

Hello everyone.
I have just been granted admission into Youngstown State University, Ohio.
Please, is it too early to apply for a Visa?
Also, is there anyone here who has been or is being sponsored by the company where they’re employed?..What is the rate of acceptance of candidates sponsored by the company where they work?
Anyone please?

For chemistry, it's late but NOT too late. It's late if you're considering financial assistance (but not impossible)and it's not too late because some schools will still need to fill up their classrooms. From the little I know, oyinbo no too dey enrol for chemistry.

So, I'd advise you to use Google at this juncture to know which school's application is open. Also, I'll like to know if you've done the GRE and the TOEFL.

Thanks bro. TOEFL comes up next week. I haven’t done gre thou. Can I DM you?

Best!!

BOLD 1
That is a weak reason why you are going for a master's degree. The world changes - yeah, that is not news! And, "upgrade"? That doesn't sound professional.

A better reason would be " I currently work in the Logistics industry and I discovered that I lack strong technical proficiency in [insert one technical industry concept], [insert another technical industry concept] and [insert another technical industry concept] which limits my productivity at work. A master's degree at this point will not only give me a sound knowledge of those technical concepts, but will also give me managerial knowhow to effectively lead teams within the logistics space"

BOLD 2

Generally, the four reasons you gave are weak.

You are going for a management degree, and there is no correlation between research and management. In fact, I don't know about your curriculum but a solid business degree like this one should not even have you doing research work (research is for PhDs and thesis masters students).

So, a VO that knows very much about business degrees will find a problem with that answer. So, look for something that is more aligned to the industry as opposed to research.

BOLD 3

Stated in that way, this is a weak statement. You can improve this statement by elaborating more on the faculty.

You can say "The faculty at the Department of blah blah at Wichita State University majorly consists of individuals with solid work experience and industry acumen in the logistics space. They have ex-CEOs and ex-Directors on their faculty with an average industry experience of 35 years, which is hardly obtainable in most universities. Learning from these individuals will give me a solid understanding of industry concepts"

DON'T GO AND SAY THIS IF IT IS NOT TRUE. THIS IS JUST AN EXAMPLE. GO AND LOOK FOR SPECIFICS IN THEIR FACULTY THAT MADE YOU BELIEVE THEY HAVE A GOOD FACULTY

BOLD 4

This is similar to my first point. You are taking advice on business education from a PhD student. Wrong move! Also, you did not provide details on the "insights" you got from your cousin. This point may somehow slip through the cracks if you elaborate on the insights you got from your cousin, but if you are unfortunate to meet a VO that has solid understanding of business education ( a lot of them in Lagos Consultate do), they might want to ask you why you are taking biz school advice from a PhD. Why not a current bschool student or an ex-student?

BOLD 5

Don't spoil your show by mentioning ranking. Wichita State University is a 230-301 ranked tier 2 school in the US. Don't spoil your show by mentioning rank. Ranking works if you attend a top 20 school. In fact, the VO won't even ask you "why this school?" if you carry the i20 of a top 20 school. So, don't shoot yourself on the leg.

The decent tuition might work but make that your last reason. If you come up with three solid reasons aside from that, leave it.

BOLD 6

Is TOEFL a standardized test? I don't know but make sure you confirm it is a standardized test.

I really appreciate the time u spent in analyzing this transcript. Truth be told I am fully aware of most of the points you laid out. However, I might not even have enough time to say all of those things, that is why I made short phrases and summaries. To answer your last question. Absolutely TOEFL is regarded as a Standardized Test. Lol I can’t even mention rank however 231 is not so bad out of the tens of thousands of schools in the US. That been said, I would love to message u privately if u don’t mind.

Thank you!

If you really are aware of most of the points I laid out, you wouldn't seek for help here or you wouldn't list those four points as reasons why you want to attend your school. My long post is meant to give you (and others) a clear gist about the whole thing. It is left for you to either use it or ignore it.

Also, I don't think those responses are too long. VOs have different ways they look at the length of your responses. Some of them like stories while others like short-pointers. So, it is safest to be in the middle (and those responses are in the middle). I always advise you list your points before explaining them so that the VO gets the message you are trying to pass across. However, as long as you are making sense, a long response is fine. Worse case, the VO will cut you when he/she hears what he/she wants to hear. So, it is better to tell a long story that makes sense than a short one that makes no sense. Nevertheless, those responses I gave you have optimal length.

For the ranking, I won't tell you again but if you want to shoot yourself on the leg, go ahead with it. If your school/program is not top 20, don't mention ranking. Being 231 out of 1000+ is not very exceptional in this case. There are dozens of other reasons to give aside from ranking.

For the TOEFL, no worries. If you say it is standardized, that is fine. I have heard different views about it (even from VOs) so that was why I told you to confirm.

All the best in your endeavors!

Here is my Transcript for my F1 Visa interview today at the US embassy

VO: Good morning and pass me your password and your i-20

ME: Good morning (Passing my passport and my i-20

VO: (typing and looking at her computer) what year did you finish your secondary school

ME: (I was feeling she asked the wrong question because while filling my forms I didn't include my secondary education) I finished my secondary school education in the year bla bla bla.

VO: After your secondary education what do you do?

ME: I gained admission to study Mechanical Engineering from bla bla bla and after gaining my National Diploma certificate, I started my HND in the same Mechanical Engineering course and I graduated in 2018.

VO: Sorry your Visa has been denied.... Try again later.

I actually applied to go and have an Associate of Science degree in the US, I used my HAND to apply when filling the form. but after the whole interview I finally realized that the secondary education she was referring to was suppose to mean the year I graduated from my HND and not secondary school. So am I answered the wrong answer to her question.

But I want to re apply... I won't give up.

You got so much money to dole out right? Did you miss the message the VO passed?

The OP is one of the many fraustrated HND graduates. US is the only country that accept us directly for a Masters. But you will never know until you stumble upon this kind of thread or meet with people from this thread. The reason for applying to associate degree is because he doesn't even know that its possible to go directly for a Masters. Now that he stumbled upon this thread, I assure you he/she will never remain the same.

I also hold the same degree and I am looking forward to study in the US. Got admitted for Msc in more than four different universities. The Visa is a different issue on it's own.

I guess some schools in UK does too. I have a friend that did his Masters at Coventry with his HND.

It is because of our failure to manage expectations, that's why there r lots of frustrated youths in Nigeria.

Let's examine d words in your reply

Luck,
this is what our traditional institution n religion sell to our people everyday. Nobody wants to work again. Everyone is expecting to get lucky n pick a bag of money on d road like Success.

if you get rejected
If u were so sure about his profile, u wouldn't even mention rejection. I was sure of what he is walking into.

plan B [/b]or [b]retry again.
Plan B is not always a fall back plan. Sometimes, it runs simultaneously with plan A. I have told him to ace his SAT n apply to multiple colleges, but u r indirectly telling him to be prepared to waste some years of his life on "try again later."

If u r 7feet, n u can't even bounce a ball, I guarantee you, u hv a very very good shot at an athletic scholarship. If u r just at the same height with most other kids in America, hmmmm.

U can teach a poor 7feet basketballer how to play, u cannot teach a 6feet 2inch basketballer how to be tall. There r always high demand for heights.

Dude's moniker is "PointGuard", I can guess how tall he is.

To d OP, if your guts tell u to apply, then apply. but u deserve to know what u r up against. Duke's Point-Guards r NBA players "masking" as college students. U will need to train hard cos d kids u trying to beat hv been training hard since age 5 or 6. U will also need a coach, because if all u play is just 3v3, u haven't learned d game. Besides, I personally know a guy who got into a Tennessee University from 200level in a Nigerian University based on basketball ALONE, dude was a freak. That's another possibility. Loads of other guys r also drafted to go play highschool basketball, n then switch to college basketball. U can also try the basketball camps like Ejike's camp, u can get exposure to foreign coaches. Between me n bracelum, u can deduce d person who knows what he is saying. This is not some phantom motivational quote.

You can always play professional basketball, but don't hang so tight onto this Duke's ticket.

You responded well and good like most, you did not react. I understand his talk dreams and your view is very convincing. Getting an admit with scholarship should be his focus and he can always do trials once school resumes. Btw, did you watch the regional finals between Michigan State and Duke yesterday?

1. The fact that nobody offered to do a mock interview with you doesn't mean u should indirectly blame this denial on this group's members. Nobody owes nobody anything.

2. when I heard maharishi University, I had to go back n double-check. I thought u were applying to a school in India. I am not a VO, but I can tell this school has a serious K-leg.

3. You graduated in 2005, which means you r probably 38 years now. It appears desperate especially coupled with your choice of school.

4. D interview just didn't go well. U couldn't say y u chose d school n it appears that u n the VO never had a meaningful discussion.

I think u first need to change d school.
l have never put any blame on the group neither blamed any member for not offered mock interview. I was just trying to share my view and seek people's advise and they have contributed and advised accordingly.

Hi. It will be hard for anyone to answer that question because they don't know who your employer is. The best thing to do is look into your company's history. Has anyone been sponsored by the company before? If yes, then you may be in luck. It is also always good to have a back up plan. It is not unusual for employers to pull their funding. Cheers.

Good day, I’ve learnt so much here and I believe the gurus here will be able to help me again.

I applied for Ms Electrical Engineering at
texas tech(still under processing)
university of texas San Antonio(accepted)
Lamar University(accepted)
university of texas Tyler(accepted)

1) I am about to strt my I-20 and visa process using Lamar(I got an out-of-state tuition waiver),
I’m still hoping to get this waiver from the other schools. My question is if i strt the process using Lamar University can I still go to another university after I hv gotten the visa. If so please how?

2) Now I have options I find myself in a tight place, I might have be overthinking how to place them in order of rank, (mostly based on employability after graduation). Please those in texas how does ut Tyler, utsa and lamar university compare to each other. If (when smiley ) I get into texas tech this would be an easier decision.

I might have been too modest in my school selection or maybe it was just right.

Who ask questions no dey loss. Please I’ll greatly appreciate all contributions. Fall 2019 we move!

Hi.

1. Yes, you can transfer to another school even after getting your visa with Lamar. But you must make sure you do that before classes start.

2. About rankings between the 3 schools; it does not actually matter. Go to anyone that offers you good funding.
