Hello Nairaland family!!!
I am a newbie here and this is my 1st post on Nairaland.

I am seriously preparing for my visa interview in Master of Public Health, coming up next week and I have been randomly researching Nairaland from part 12.

I would love to post my proposed transcript but it is too voluminous. Please what advice would can this family give me as I studied B.SC Political Science and I am starting the MPH with a 4 months English language learning as indicated on my I-20.

Thank you.

Nigeria is an english speaking country so why pay 4 months to learn basic english . Did you write TOEFL ?. if no have you thought of writing it inorder to remove that 4 Months english thing on your admission . Toefl cost will be way cheaper than tution to learn english

Also an interesting switch Pol Science to MPH .....

Hello, from your note, it's obvious your got a CONDITIONAL admission. No one can predict your chances but it's not a good thing if it is stated on your I-20 that you'd be taking ESL classes. Which school is that bro?

I see. The school is National University, San Diego. So what’s your take on the whole thing?

I wrote the TOEFL but underscored. Honestly it was a battle between reading and work.

About the switch, Yes it’s indeed a rare one. Please what’s your take on the whole thing?

Although I can relate the MPH to my undergraduate degree and work experience.

You can use your 1-20 for Interview as many times as you can before the start date stated on it.

Just prepare adequately, Nairaland is a very useful tool.

Overall, I see you at a disadvantage but nothing is impossible: The English class and the switch to MPH from Political Science. To some degree, I am of the belief that the VO might ask you during the interview if you're a MD or a healthcare worker. Since you've scheduled your visa appointment, just prepare enough and be able to defend why you're taking the switch. Also, what that school has to offer.
Best!!

Just pay for another visa appointment. The SEVIS fee is valid for a year.

When it comes to career choice i dont comment ,,, I love people to do what they really want to do . If you are passionate about a field then chase your dreams . So that switch is possible, you just need to be explain yourself well when asked

My main concern is your school sounds like one chance ......... going to the embassy with that school and then conditional offer... your "work " is harder to be able to convince the VO

sillysassysally:
I came across this post on LinkedIn and I thought to share. This is targeted at prospective MBA candidates or MS candidates in business school courses like finance or analytics.

https://www.linkedin.com/feed/update/urn:li:activity:6516042331622379520/
This guy went to Stanford for his MBA (#1 MBA program in the world)... He’s still looking for a job. Read the comments and you’ll see many others (even with STEM MS) still job searching.

Lots of people make it seem like the hustle ends once you’re able to get into a top program. No. That’s when it actually begins because getting into a top program doesn't guarantee you a job upon graduation. According to the Stanford guy “there’s a significant a gap between leads -> interest -> offer”. You’ll still have to work your ass off to secure a job. The best your degree does for you to give you access to networks, job postings, interviews, and whatnot, but It’s your responsibility to convert these accesses to a job.

If you’re going to be using loans to finance your degree, it's even more tricky because you really need a job to pay off the loans... but then, getting the job isn't even certain... What then can you do?

Make sure you have a strategy.

1. Don’t only focus on building a profile that’ll get you into a top school. Focus on building a profile that’ll land you your dream job after getting into you into a top school. You’d do yourself a lot of good if you can get relevant and recognizable working experience before going for your program (even if it’s a pre-experience program). Multinational experiences count well too.

2. Have a plan for your loans. Don’t over-leverage yourself because anything can happen. The only certain thing in life is uncertainty. I know of someone that planned on using loans to finance her MS in finance degree but upon arriving campus, she got a TA-ship role and was able to cancel her loan agreement (You actually have a window to reject any loan agreement – depends on the terms of the loan provider).

3. You may decide to take a non-conventional route to get your MBA. You could go for a Canadian PA (which is relatively easy to get), work for 3 years, earn good $ and then go for your US MBA (you may not even need the loans at this point). Then after your MBA, you're not stranded because you have Canadian papers...

"We see better when we stand on the shoulders of those that have gone ahead of us"

Some context to this guy, he is the whistleblower who alleged Stanford was been biased in handling of financial aid

Maybe that explains why recruiters are avoiding him

Don't waste your time on this school.
1. Created in 1971, n have graduated a total of 150k students till date. It means they graduate an average of 3500 students per year between 1975 to 2018. Some school's departments hv more than that figure (not entire school o).

2. On Wikipedia, they said the school is an ADULT SCHOOL.

3. Classes are only attended in the last 4 weeks of a semester n they classes are held at NIGHT.

4. School has 12 campuses. They just rent any available 2 bedroom flat n open a new branch.

5. I can also bet your MPH is not accredited.

Don't apply to this one except you have a very potent juju cheesy cheesy cheesy

The school is not as bad as you portray. The only thing there is that it is designed for adults. So a youth should not go there.

Damn! Thank you for this insight.

This is very serious and through this act, he may find it very hard to get job referrals from the Stanford GSB alum body. Once you go against a school with such connections, they won't be willing to offer assistance. And once you remove that connections, you have removed almost 80% of the worth of that degree.

I heard of a similar case from one of the top 10 bschools but this one was almost on the verge of getting two offers from two top investment banks. He had a problem with the school and when they knew about his recruiting process, they called and gave bad reviews for him. They went further to inform other Wall Street banks and he has not been able to get a job across all banks on the Street - he ended up in an FP&A role in tech.

There was another woman at Apple that got her job just by a simple recommendation. She had her MBA at Harvard Business School and applied for a senior role at one of the big tech firms. Her hiring manager was an HBS alum and once he saw that she was from his alma mata, he concluded that he would hire her. However, he contacted her ex-Professor to ask about the lady and the Professor gave her good reviews. He recruited her immediately and she went on to become one of the most successful tech leaders in Silicon Valley.

Moral of the story: Recommendations matter a lot. Once I saw this, I knew it will play a major role in his predicament.

Hahahaha

Yeah, Wall Street bankers are very very close. Information spread like wildfire across the Street because they know themselves a lot (college buddies, finance club members, friends of friends etc). Feel free to ask current bankers if you like.

Hello Nairaland Family, I have a huge passion in studying in the U.S but financially I'm not okay and it's driving me crazy, I have make researches day and night if there are opportunities or possibly loan i could get and payback. I'm not lazy i would pay back in time but none gave without a cosigner.

The biggest problem I'm having right now is that, It's only me that have interest in this my parent doesn't seems to care about my passion towards this because they believe they don't have the millions and not ready to support my passion

I'm set to take the SAT I've been studying for the exam for the past 4months now but haven't seen any opportunity to register due to financial incapability...

Pls can anyone generous register me for the SAT...I know I might not have anything to reward the person but the God of Favour will favour the person in returns....
I strongly believe, I'll pass the exam with a great grade and qualify for scholarship...
