Military Kills 35 Bandits, Rescues 40 Hostages In Zamfara.

The military has killed 35 bandits and rescued 40 abducted people, including children, women, and men during the operations designed to tackle banditry in Zamfara and other contiguous states.

The Acting Force Information Officer of Operation Sharan Daji (OPSD), Major Clement Abiade, disclosed this in a statement sent to Channels Television on Friday.

He added that a total of 18 suspected bandits’ informants, rustlers, kidnappers and logistics suppliers were arrested as troops continue to dominate the Area of Operation with aggressive fighting patrols.
Major Abiade explained that the soldiers conduct day and night patrols deep into the forest areas to deny the bandits freedom of action while building the confidence of the local population.

He noted that the intensity and redoubled efforts in the conduct of military activities were complemented by Exercise Harbin Kunama III, which commenced on April 1.

The OPSD spokesman said the operations have achieved tremendous successes, leading to the recovery of weapons, ammunition and rustled animals in various parts of their area of operation.

He disclosed that during the period, the Air Component of the operation carried out several air strikes around Kagara, Gando, Fankama, Fete and Dumburum Forests.

According to Major Abiade, the forests provide sanctuaries and hideouts where kidnapped victims are often hidden but the air strikes are precision activities designed to avoid collateral damage.

He further revealed that one Muhammed Iso suspected to be a notorious kidnapper was intercepted in Niger Republic in collaboration with the security forces in the country.

“The bandit hails from Naagwalam in Katsina State and confessed to being a member of a five-man syndicate responsible for kidnapping and highway robbery in Batsari and Jibiya axis,” the statement said.

It added, “It is instructive to state that the suspects arrested have been handed over to Nigerian Police and other agencies for further investigation and possible prosecution.

“It is significant to mention that subsequent operations in the forests led to the rescue of 40 abductees consisted of men, women and children from communities in Zamfara State.”

The OPSD spokesman said troops recovered four AK47 rifles, two locally-made pump action rifles, 17 rounds of 7.62mm (special) ammunition and 20 cartridges.

Additionally, 10 motorcycles, 94 rustled animals, and two handsets were recovered during the period under review.

Major Abiade affirmed that the Force Commander, Major General Hakeem Otiki, and men of OPSD remained committed to tackling the menace of armed banditry and other forms of criminal activities in Zamfara.

He also said they were determined to ensure that bandits do not establish sanctuaries in the contiguous states of Kebbi, Katsina and Sokoto.

RE: ALLEGED BOMBING OF WRONG SETTLEMENTS BY NAF

The attention of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has been drawn to some media reports insinuating that the recent air strikes conducted by its Air Task Force for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA killed only innocent civilians in the areas attacked and not bandits. The NAF finds such reports rather ridiculous because most of the locations attacked are within the Rugu, Sububu and Kagara Forests general area, which are known armed bandits hideouts that have been attacked in the past, without any outcry. Besides, the NAF target selection process for air operations is particularly rigorous and methodical in order to ensure proper target identification and thereby prevent strikes on wrong locations.

For the avoidance of doubts, the public is to please note that the locations attacked from 8 to 11 April 2019 were selected based on human intelligence (HUMINT) reports obtained from security agencies and other government sources, traditional and community leaders as well as reliable, vetted informants. These were all further confirmed by days of detailed day and night Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) missions to ensure proper targeting for avoidance of collateral damage. To further ensure this, as standard practice, NAF attack aircraft on air interdiction missions are accompanied by ISR platforms that guide them to designated targets. Furthermore, NAF pilots, by training and in line with extant Rules of Engagement (ROEs) for the operation, do not attack any location if it is observed that non-combatants, especially women and children, are present. In such cases, the pilots would rather return to Base with their munitions unexpended. Consequently, it is inconceivable that the NAF would attack locations where innocent civilians reside.

In view of the foregoing, the NAF finds it rather mischievous that anyone would spread such deliberate misinformation whilst the Service is doing its best to effectively respond to the challenges facing the good people of Zamfara State and its environs. Rather than making such spurious and unsubstantiated allegations, NAF requests that anyone with evidence to the effect that innocent civilians were targeted by the NAF air strikes should produce such evidence.

The NAF, as a professional Service, would not want to join issues with any group of individuals, including traditional rulers, but will rather remain committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Nigerians. Accordingly, we shall continue to work assiduously, in synergy with sister Services and other security agencies, to rid the Northwest of all criminal elements. The general public can therefore rest assured that the NAF will not be deterred but will sustain its air operations to facilitate a return to normalcy that would enable Nigerians in the area pursue their legitimate aspirations. In this regard, the NAF hereby advocates public support, and not distracting and unsubstantiated allegations, as its personnel continue to sacrifice towards eliminating all threats to the security and, indeed, the development of our beloved Country.

TERRORISTS SUFFER FURTHER LOSSES IN NORTHERN BORNO STATE AS NAF DEGRADES THEIR HIDEOUT IN TUMBUN ZARAMI

The Air Task Force (ATF) of Operation LAFIYA DOLE has degraded an Islamic State of West Africa Province (ISWAP) Terrorists’ hideout and neutralized some of their fighters at Tumbun Zarami in the Northern part of Borno State. This was accomplished through air strikes conducted today, 8 April 2019, as part of the ongoing air campaign of Operation YANCIN TAFKI, which is aimed at flushing out ISWAP elements from islands on the fringes of the Lake Chad.

A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) Intelligence, Surveillance and Reconnaissance (ISR) platform, on a routine reconnaissance mission, observed significant presence of ISWAP fighters in the settlement, with several structures and equipment spotted beneath the thick vegetation of the area. Accordingly, the ATF scrambled 2 NAF Alpha Jets to attack the location, recording successful strikes on the terrorists’ structures and neutralizing several of their fighters. The attached short video clip, now declassified, shows some portions of the attack which may be viewed by the general public.

The NAF, operating in concert with surface forces, will sustain its operations to completely degrade the terrorists in the Northeast.

NAF RECORDS SUCCESSFUL AIR STRIKES AGAINST ARMED BANDITS IN ZAMFARA STATE

The Air Task Force (ATF) for Operation DIRAN MIKIYA has continued to record successes in its renewed air offensive against armed bandits in Zamfara State and its environs. The air strikes, which were intensified on 8 April 2019 with the deployment of additional aircraft, are aimed at flushing out the bandits from their hideouts in Sububu, Rugu and Kagara Forests, amongst others, whilst ensuring the protection of the lives and properties of citizens in the Northwest of the Country.

On the first day of the intensive operation, the ATF conducted coordinated air raids against multiple identified armed bandits’ hideouts at Doumborou, Sububu, West Malamawa, Baturia Pond and Rugu Forest, where several bandits were neutralized and their camps destroyed.

Yesterday, 9 April 2019, the ATF conducted waves of attacks against several targets. The first wave struck 3 armed bandits locations within Sububu Forest as well as another camp in Kagara Forest. Targets attacked in the second wave were notable armed bandits’ hideouts at Kamarawa, Kunduma and Tsamare Hill, while the third wave focused on armed bandits hideouts in Doumborou. The ATF also provided close air support‪ to surface forces of Sector 2 to enable them move into the attacked areas to mop-up the fleeing survivors and recover their weapons. ‬In all, the ATF degraded 8 camps and neutralized scores of armed bandits.

Reports indicate that, ‬as a result of the air strikes, ‪some of the bandits are fleeing towards the border ‬between Nigeria and Niger Republic‪. Accordingly, the ATF is liaising with relevant authorities to ensure that the bandits are prevented from escaping through the Southern part of Niger Republic.‬

The NAF, in consonance with surface forces and other relevant authorities, will sustain its efforts to end the scourge of banditry and other related threats to life and safety in the Northwest of our dear nation.

HMOD COMMISSIONS NEW ACCOMMODATION FOR PERSONNEL, COMMENDS NAF ROLE IN COUNTERINSURGENCY OPERATIONS

The Honourable Minister of Defence (HMOD), Mansur Mohammad Dan-Ali, has commended the efforts of the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) in providing required support to the surface forces in the fight against insurgency in the Northeast and armed banditry in the Northwest of the country. The Minister stated this today, 9 April 2019, while commissioning 2 Blocks of 16 Single Room Accommodation for airmen/airwomen constructed by the Ministry of Defence (MOD), as well as newly resurfaced roads at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive, Abuja. The roads, resurfaced by the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, were named after retired former Chiefs of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Isaac Alfa and Air Vice Marshal Femi John Femi, while the newly constructed blocks of accommodation, which were furnished by the NAF, were named after Late Lance Corporal Nura Adamu and Late Aircraftman Ishmael Meshack who died in the Mi-35M Helicopter crash in Damasak, Borno State on 2 January 2019. The Minister re-affirmed that the NAF remains a key component of the Armed Forces in its constitutional role of providing Aid to Civil Authority across the country. According to him, some of the NAF's notable efforts in this regard include surveillance, security of airports, emergency assistance and resettlement of displaced persons.

While urging the beneficiaries of the facilities to exhibit the spirit of maintenance due to the huge costs committed in the execution of the projects, the HMOD noted that the projects were in line with the drive and commitment of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, to support the NAF in boosting morale of personnel. “I know the average NAF personnel would always put in his best, when he knows that his welfare and that of his family especially as regards accommodation is well catered for”, he said. The Minister expressed profound gratitude to the President for his unflinching support to the NAF stating that the modest achievements so far recorded would not have been possible without his support. The HMOD promised to continue providing the required motivation to enhance NAF performance in its assigned roles.

In his welcome address, the Chief of Administration, Air Vice Marshal Kingsley Lar had commended the efforts of the HMOD and the CAS for initiating such laudable projects to the benefit of NAF personnel. According to him, the need to create a very conducive working environment as well as better living conditions for personnel and their families could not be overemphasized as it would further enhance their professionalism. The occasion was attended by dignitaries, including the representatives of Service Chiefs and the Permanent Secretary MOD, as well Directors from MOD, Branch Chiefs from Headquarters NAF and the Commader 053 NAF Camp Abuja, Air Commodore Garba Yusuf, who gave the vote of thanks.

NAF ESTABLISHES PIPE BAND, TO UPGRADE MUSIC SPECIALTY TO A FULL-FLEDGED DIRECTORATE

The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 9 April 2019, graduated its first set of pipers at a colourful ceremony held at NAF Base, Bill Clinton Drive Abuja, which signaled the formal induction of the Pipe Band into the NAF. Twenty-five NAF personnel, comprising 22 airmen and 3 airwomen, successfully completed the course. The establishment of the Pipe Band, is in line with one of the key drivers of the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar’s Vision, that is; “human capacity development through robust and result oriented training for enhanced professional performance”. The Pipe Band is a key part of the full complement of military music systems, hence its induction will add glamour, aesthetics and pride to NAF ceremonies and events.

Speaking during the graduation ceremony, the CAS expressed delight with the level of proficiency of the new NAF Pipe Band, which he said, attested to the quality of the training they had received. He commended the Administration Branch for the initiative, noting that, with the establishment of the Pipe Band, amongst other innovations, the Music Specialty, was ripe for upgrade to a full-fledged Directorate. The CAS charged the NAF Music personnel not to limit themselves to parades and military ceremonies but to take a step further to provide creative performances that will project the good image of the NAF and enhance civil-military relations.

Earlier in his welcome address, the Chief of Administration, Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal Kingsley Lar, acknowledged and appreciated the noble gesture of the CAS in approving the establishment of the NAF Pipe Band ensemble to complement the already existing NAF Band. The gesture, according to him, would remain an indelible achievement of the current NAF leadership. He stated that the NAF Pipe Band Course had almost seemed like a mission impossible ab-initio, bearing in mind that the Pipe band endeavour is not common. He thanked the CAS for approving the course and providing the equipment, uniforms and accessories for the Pipe Band.

Highlights of the Graduation Ceremony included a demonstration by the graduating students and presentation of certificates and awards to them. Dignitaries at the event included representatives of the Chiefs of Army and Naval Staff, Directors from the Ministry of Defence as well as Branch Chiefs from Headquarters NAF along with several other senior military officers.

NAF WILL SUSTAIN EFFORTS AT ENSURING PEACE, SECURITY IN THE COUNTRY - CAS

The Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, has disclosed that, in line with its statutory responsibilities, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) will sustain its efforts at ensuring peace, security and wellbeing of Nigeria and Nigerians. These, he said, would continue to be achieved through the effective employment of air power and deployment of ground troops for Internal Security Operations across the Country. Speaking through the Chief of Policy and Plans, Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Emmanuel Anebi, the CAS revealed that the NAF had been able to effectively perform its roles due to the continued support of the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, through the provision of new aircraft and equipment as well as the necessary resources to sustain its operations. He averred that the recently acquired platforms had greatly enhanced NAF’s operational effectiveness and efficiency in the fight against insurgency in the North East and armed banditry in the North West. He noted that the NAF would continue to build needed capacity whilst developing strategies to anticipate and curb emerging security threats across the Country.

Air Marshal Abubakar expressed these thoughts while commissioning some projects at the Military Training Centre (MTC) and Regiment Training Centre (RTC), NAF Base Kaduna today, 10 April 2019. The projects commissioned comprised 2 blocks of 10 x single-room student’s accommodation at RTC as well as renovated classrooms and office block at Air Provost School and 3 blocks of 10 x single-room accommodation at the Cadets’ Quarters, MTC. In his words, “We are committed to providing enabling and conducive environment for learning, undertaking laudable projects that would revitalize the professional competence of personnel for higher quality output to the Service”. The CAS said the NAF would continue to improve the welfare of personnel whilst sustaining training activities, both within and outside the country, as well as providing basic infrastructural facilities for enhanced service delivery. He therefore urged personnel to appreciate the huge investments and rededicate themselves towards giving back to the Nigerians nothing but their optimum performance.

While delivering his welcome address, the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command, AVM Idi Amin, thanked the CAS for providing decent office and residential accommodation for the 2 Centres and urged personnel of the Command to reciprocate the Federal Government’s commitments to providing decent accommodation to personnel by continually striving to make the Service more effective in addressing current and emerging security challenges in the Country. The ceremony was attended by senior NAF officers in Kaduna.

I don't know why the entirety of Nigerian society is so clueless about defense and security matters.
With the killings in zamfara state, kaduna and all across the country, all you hear in the media is, "mr president do something " or fire the service chiefs.
There is a complete inability even with the so called security expert pundits to discern, why the armed forces are so ineffective.
PMB could send troops to zamfara till he is blue in the face, it will do nothing. This is because our military lacks the capability and the capacity to wage this sort or any other sort of war.

As ecomog1990 and others have pointed out on this forum, the Mod and military brass receive an allocation of our defense expenditure, but no new or functional equipment comes out from it to empower our forces to defeat both the enemies and the terrain.

What has become of the 1 billion usd fund allocated for emergency defense spending?
Did it become some body's campaign war chest ? the exact crime former NSA is being held for.

Troops need helicopters to maneuver about the battle space. That is, cut these bandits off from escaping.

As the 3 Fs in counterinsurgency doctrine dictates. Find(through reconnaissance), Fix ( by maneuvering to cut off escape routes) and then Finish (with extreme prejudice)

Our troops also require a massive infusion of A vehicles. APCS, IFVs, Mraps and the like.

Our defense budget as is can afford these purchases. But it is simply not happening.

So, Nigerians should demand, what is happening to our military budget? What has become of allocated funds ?

Hilux trucks or innoson trucks aka B vehicles ain't gonna cut it.

Also Oga presido, while you are in Jordan , can you inquire about the weapons the king offered to donate to Nigeria.
You know, if we choose to go the begging route, we must act like we need it.

Where are the aircraft's, who gives a damn about a pipe band?

The Nigerian army, not to be left behind has opened a University. Where do they get the money to do this yet cannot buy aircraft on scale. JF-17 since 2014 talks has been on going..It's getting on 5 years..and when it finally arrives we have just THREE..and that will be it.

In this period Angola and Egypt just took delivery of more combat aircraft. Even Zambia now flies more modern platforms than the NAF. These countries are not at war, neither can they match a country whose smallest state in land area has a GDP greater than the economies of East Africa's two largest economy comined. Yet we can't even buy ONE ...10 years since the insurgency and billions allowed what has the NAF achieved?

Two second hand Alpha Jet that we had to weaponize anf Super Mushankh trainers. It's like everybody is profiteering from this war because nobody wants it to end. Everything na project. The NAF rather than focus on its core mission is building it's own army and increasing in numbers every year...soon they will start fighting for allocation with the army. The army on its part were were made to believe has activated it's army aviation corp. Til today we year nothing
..that chapter has closed. There is no sense of urgency to end the war..we are fast becoming the laughing stock of Africa
