Oriabor’s Compound
After eating lunch, Deaconess Oriabor told her daughter Jane to give her gist on what happened at the mission. Jane didn’t meet her at home when she returned yesterday. And by the time she came back Jane was already sleeping.
“Hope you spent quality time with the Pastor?”
“Pastor David!” She frowned. “Mum, I don’t understand him, imagine even food he will not allow me serve him. He even told Mummy Adetula to be in charge of his food”
“Hmm….he is trying to play safe”
“Mummy many things happened on that mission field but the only thing that concerns me and baffles me at the same time is that Pastor David kind of have a soft spot for Ademide”
“Who is Ademide?”
“Mummy Adetula’s daughter, she joined the church some months ago”
“She joined the church some months ago! And she’s coming from no where to claim your territory!”
“Relax Mummy, the girl is not interested one bit in Pastor David, I really took my time to study her. She almost died in mission field infact Pastor David tried for her still she doesn’t see it as big deal. I doubt if he she even see it as anything special. Also, I remember when we were leaving for that village, Pastor David asked her and her sister to join him in his car but she objected, she followed this new brother that joined the church few months ago and from the look of things, Ademide has eyes for that guy”
“Which guy again is that. Is he rich?”
“Mummy! You and rich guy. He is rich and we equally have so many rich guys who attends our church but I’m not interested in only rich, I want to marry a rich, handsome and popular anointed man of God. I want to be a Pastor’s wife”
“I know you want to marry a public figure Pastor but I think you should consider this guy too, don’t put your eggs in one basket” She counselled.
“No o Mummy, it’s either Pastor David or no one else. That’s the man I love”
“Ok, but if I were you I will play a smart game. Because this move of yours is dumb. How can you see another rich Christian guy and not take advantage of that, what if it didn’t work out with Pastor…..
“Mum!”
“Ok”
She picked her phone and went to her room in annoyance, she couldn’t believe her mum is backing down already when she heard of another rich guy. She likes the guy, it’s only rich but not influential and she wants both. If only she knew.

*****
On Monday morning, Ademide was so excited but tried to hide her feelings so her family members won’t suspect a thing. She got to the office. And started typing her resignation letter on her system. She typed and printed a copy with the printer. She left her office and went to Pastor David’s office to tender the resignation letter. She met with his secretary and told her she wants to see the Pastor.
“He’s not on seat, he travelled to UK this morning. A new branch was opened and he needed to be there”
“Really! But he was in church yesterday and we just came back from a mission trip!”
“That’s what the job entails. He hardly rest sometimes”
“When is he coming back?” Ademide asked pretending as if she didn’t notice Bunmi's pity speech. She was less concerned.
“He’ll be back on Saturday”
“Saturday! Anyway, I want to drop this for him before but I can as well drop it with you, please give this to him when he returns” Ademide said stretching her hand to hand the brown envelope.
“What’s in there?” Bunmi asked pointing at the envelope Ademide was still holding.
“Sis Bunmi, just give it to him”
“I can only collect it when I know the content in this envelope. If it’s something that can wait, then you’ll have to wait till he is back and if it’s an emergency then I’ll have to pass the message to him right away” she explained.
“Sis Bunmi, don’t do this now, this can’t wait”
“Is it an emergency?”
“Somehow, it’s a….resig…na..tion letter”
“Resignation what! When did you start working that you are resigning” she said clapping her hands together.
“You won’t understand!”
“Make me”
“He…actually told me to submit this!”
“Sis Ademide! What happened this time again? Anyways, this is not an emergency, just go back to your office and when he comes back you can hand over your resignation letter personally next week Monday”
“Huh! Sis Bunmi!”
“Ehn nau, there’s no work on Saturdays, he will arrive on Saturday but he won’t be here until Monday”
“I thought you like me. You won’t give your daughter my name again o” She said sounding like a big baby.
“Of course I like you but you don’t like your job, you don’t even like your Pastor at all. If not for the trust I have in Pastor David, I would have thought maybe he had done something a Pastor shouldn’t have done to you and that’s why you don’t pay attention to anything he says or ask you to do” She said with all sincerity.
“Ah! Far from it, he is a very good Pastor and I respect that. It’s just that personally, I don’t feel him. That’s all!”
“You don’t feel your Pastor! I laugh in Chinese. See, Sis. Ademide just go to your office, I can’t laugh abeg”
“Is that what you’ll say abi, no problem” She said and grudgingly left. Bunmi just smiled and shaked her head wondering what planet she came from. “I just don’t feel him” she said.
mimicking Ademide.

Some days later, Daddy Obafemi and his wife called their son, David to ask after him and know how he was faring in the UK. Pastor David excitedly went into details and told them how far the ministry work was going over there. Mummy Crystal snatched the phone from her husband playfully.
“I called him not you” he said jokingly and snatched the phone back from his wife playfully and his wife giggled.
“Geez! Do you two realize that you are old” Pastor David said.
“See now, your son said we are old and shameless” Daddy Oba said to his wife.
“Eh!” she exclaimed. “Give me the phone” She said and her husband gave her the phone. “Shebi you gave me the phone now, if you have done that jejeli he wouldn’t have called us old.
“Hello, Mr Pastor. Did you just called my husband and I old and shameless” she queried.
“I only said old, your husband added that”
“Yes now, he only help you complete the statement. We are old and shameless to be fighting over phone ukwa!”
“Oh…. Mum don’t start. You know I’m only joking and I will do anything to have the kind of relationship you and Daddy has after over twenty years of marriage”
“And God we give you a home much more sweeter than ours in Jesus name”
“Amen. Mummy”
“Reason why I snatched, the phone. Your sister is in UK, I’ll send her this number so she can call you. She will give you some things to bring home for me”
“Mum!”
“Please….
“Hope it’s not a whole container” he said jokingly.
“Not at all, trust me”
“Alright, I will be expecting her”
“Good. Take care”
“Can I have my phone now!” Daddy Oba said.
“Okay, hold on for your Dad” She said and gave the phone back to her husband.
Father and son talked about business for some minutes before ending the call. Pastor David’s father wished his son can held his company because he’s so good and business oriented but he just has to understand his son’s calling.

CHAPTER 18
The weekend was very slow for Ademide. She couldn’t wait for Monday to come. Adeola noticed how she was clamouring for a new week and ask her what exactly was wrong.
“Nothing. I just want this week to just past”
“Is this about Pastor David again”
“Jesus! What kind of question is this? Does the world revolves around him”
“Did you just say that?”
“Adeola we only exchanged words whenever Pastor David’s name pop up. Can we just stop bringing this name up and have peace” Adeola shaked her head for her sister.
“You’re not the girl I use to know….” she sang and left the room.

Later in the evening, the family had all gone to bed but they had a loud banging on the door. They were so scared as everyone gathered in the sitting room. Then they heard a voice.
“It’s me Daddy Ladi, please I need Mummy nurse’s help” he said loudly.
“Please open the door it. The man lives on the same street with us” Mummy Adetula said and Deacon Adetula opened the door.
“My wife is in labour and my car broke down. She said I should bring you, it’s like it’s already late to go to the hospital” he said. Sweating profusely.
“Wait here, let me take somethings I’ll need” Mrs Adetula said. She went inside and came back with a kit in her hand. She didn’t bother to change from her night gown, she just tied a wrapper around her waist. Her two daughters followed her, they always watch her whenever she attends to her patients. Infact the two of them can deliver a baby successfully it’s just that the opportunity never presented itself.
By the time they got there. She made her lie on her back on the bed. She spread her legs as she checked her, And she realized she was touching the hair of the baby. The man was right it’s too late to go to the hospital. She has to do the delivery immediately.
Ademide, who saw what her mum saw too quickly opened the kit. She and Adeola were set to give their mum a helping hand. Adeola went back to the sitting room to get the baby’s bag that was supposed to be taking to the hospital.
“Mummy Ladi. now we need to work together are you ready to cooperate with me?” Mummy Adetula asked.
“Yes ma” She said weakly.
“Good. Now take a deep breath” She said and the woman did. She asked her to repeat it again and she did.
“Now at the count of three, you push. 1,2,3” she counted.
“Awgh….. ……she pushed. Adeola, used a wet napkin to mop her face, they were all saying things to calm her down.
“Again, I need another push” she said and the woman screamed in pain. She pushed again.
“You are doing great. You need one more push, once the shoulder is out, then it’s over” Mummy Adetula said.
“I’m tired ma”
“You are strong in Jesus name. Say that” she commanded.
“I am strong in Jesus name”
Adeola and Ademide too say it to her that she is strong in Jesus name.
“Now Push” she said and the woman pushed with the whole of her strength.
“It’s a he….here comes your baby” The baby came out crying. Adeola passed her a sterilized scissors and she cut the unbiblical cord.
She passed it to Ademide who knew what to do. The baby was cleaned up including the mother too. She set IV fluid for her. Then they handed her baby to her for her to hold. It was her second child and first boy. They call in the husband whose joy knew no bound as he held his boy. They waited till the fluids finished. She checked out her vital signs and that of the baby and did all the necessary things. He told the husband to take the mother and baby to the hospital first thing in the morning.
By 2am, Mummy Adetula and her daughters left the place when all the vital signs shows that the woman was stable. The husband offered to accompany them but they told him to stay with his wife. They were used to walking at night when they are called for emergencies like this. Even the vigilantes recognized Mummy Adetula, there are times when they will accompany her home. They appreciate the fact that she always help people out in the neighborhood.
Deacon Adetula opened the door for them. Mummy Adetula thanked her daughter for their help. “I still wonder why the two of you refused to work in medical line” she said.
And they all laughed, because it’s late.. “Let’s go to bed, today is Sunday and by 7am we’ll be leaving the house” Deacon Adetula said and everyone went to his room.

Rachealfst, you're such a prolific writer. I admire your story telling skills, your write-up arrangement, your use of grammar, your deep descriptive sense... You make your readers connect to the story and it's so easy to relate. Just bumped into the story yesterday and have read up, I was able to read that fast due to the way your captured my attention and your story is so captivating. I almost feel like I'm watching a movie. Keep up the great work miss, and more grease to your elbow and more ink to your pen and more greater ideas to your wonderfully crafted brain...
