Power Outages Are A Thing Of The Past In Zambia — And Supply Could Even Become Surplus Soon Zambia’s electricity progress will be a subject of jealousy back in Nigeria, the self-styled Giant of Africa, where decades of electricity outages has still not been resolved despite the supposed investment of billions of dollars. The African Development Bank Group has celebrated the success of Zambia in eliminating frequent power outages, which used to be a regular feature of the southern African country. Using its verified Twitter account @AfDB_Group, the bank tweeted on Saturday: “Power cuts are now a thing of the past in #Zambia! A major boost in electricity production - thanks to a robust hydraulic and solar power generation industry - means the country is now self-sufficient in energy.” http://saharareporters.com/2019/04/20/power-outages-are-thing-past-zambia-%E2%80%94-and-supply-could-even-become-surplus-soon

that we still suffer power cuts is not the problem, the problem is that there is no solution in sight. with the way things are going, we will still be where we are in the next 10 years. 7 Likes |

So AFDB themselves don't know how to spell hydroelectric? Well, I think Nigeria power situation is getting better. Here in Abuja, it has been 72 hours on and 1 day off for the past 4 months plus. 2 Likes 1 Share |

But this surprisingly irresponsible tweet from the AFDB does not tell us about ACCESS TO ELECTRICITY in Zambia. Meaning what percentage of the population has access to electricity. This is far more important than 'stability' of the power. Here are the facts: Zambia: National access to electricity averages at 31% with 67% of the urban and 4% of the rural population having access to power. https://www.google.co.uk/search?source=hp&ei=NZS7XPvNHoHXwALNxKP4Dg&q=zambia+access+to+electricity&oq=zanbia+access&gs_l=psy-ab.1.2.0i13l6j0i22i30l4.632.3310..5334...0.0..0.162.975.13j1......0....1..gws-wiz.....0..0j0i131j0i10.kPwGo44AGc0 Access to electricity (% of population) in Nigeria was reported at 59.3 % in 2016, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources. Access to electricity is the percentage of population with access to electricity. https://www.google.co.uk/search?ei=O5S7XK_hC8H5wQKZvJOYDQ&q=nigeria+access+to+electricity&oq=nigeria+access+to+electricity&gs_l=psy-ab.3..0j0i30j0i333l2.78267.79481..80962...0.0..0.69.399.7....3..0....1..gws-wiz.......0i71j0i7i30j0i7i5i30j0i7i5i10i30j0i13i5i10i30j0i13i5i30.WZwTwtPyj0E This means that a greater proportion of NIGERIANS is connected to the national grid, and has access to electricity, than Zambians. Which is quite a feat, considering the Nigerian population is 200 million compared to Zambia's 17 million . 1 Like 1 Share |

SarkinYarki: .Although peak generation increased from 4,500MW in 2015 to 5,200MW in 2017 and 5,300MW in February, 2019, the average daily power has remained at a range of 3,400MW and 4,000MW on a daily basis. The 8,100MW wheeling capacity does not translate to 8,100MW power distribution to the country neither has even the 5,300MW historic peak generation been sustained for one day. https://www.dailytrust.com.ng/fact-check-do-nigerian-states-now-have-almost-24-hours-power-supply.html Stop pulling figures out of your crack. 2 Likes |
