Hello Feflo. Please could you explain what a converted UPS is? is it just a UPS with jumped battery wire to a Bigger battery?

I have a 2200VA Blue Gate UPS and would be glad if I can make an Inverter out of it.

Brief explanations on my installation
KNIFE SWITCH
Also called a change over, serves two major purposes
1. To change from utility or Gen to inverter and vice versa. Most if not all inverter comes with automatic change over device built into them, at times the supply might be bad and the inverter will refuse to trigger this auto device, in that case the knife switch provides a good opportunity to change over.

2. In case the inverter is faulty and needed to taken out for repairs, with the change over you can switch to utility or Gen pending when the repairs is completed

CIRCUIT BREAKER

This is to protect the inverter from fault current coming from the loads attached to the inverter.

The socket provides the source of charge for the inverter, if I use double 13anps, then there is also an external charger that takes the other space.

I don't understand this, if you've plugged the inverter to one part of the socket to charge, then why use an external charger again?

@dragnet, in sorting the loads for the inverter, i completely remove them from the Distribution Board and put on my own Circuit Breaker.

@ mukhcech, you should have shown the picture of the back that carries the nameplate rating. It looks like a 650va UPS and that"s about 400watts of usable power.

Thank you for the respond. It is a built setup. The owner wants to sell it. According to him. He usually use it with two trailer batteries. My delimna now is I don't know the rating and the right price to buy it from him. According to him the made in Nigeria setup both serve as inverter and charger to charge the batteries. Attached is more pics.

I snapped the transformer alongside the small unit ups which are normally 650va
Is there a way i can know the ratings. What equipment is required?

The unit is a APC 600 UPS tho with some modifications already done... I saw it today when I went to get the 650.

Who has done a APC 650 Conversion please should help point the cooling fan positive spot. For several hours, I searched and couldn't pin it.

UPS and Power Inverter:

UPS - UPS or the uninterruptible power supply makes use of an internal inverter to convert DC power to AC. Then it stores power in its built-in battery.

Power Inverter – The inverter is generally connected to an exterior DC source to maintain continuous AC current flow. In this case, a standalone battery or batteries are used for storing energy.

Basic difference:

In UPS, the switchover to backup power is prompt, while in an inverter there is a little delay. This break is acceptable on household appliances like fans, lights, and fridge, but it is not suitable for sensitive equipment like computers and printers. Such delays can cause system crash and data loss.
It uses the main supply line for sending power to various appliances at homes or offices. Unlike the UPS, it is not directly plugged to the appliances.
Technical variance:
UPS – In UPS, the AC from the main power is transformed to DC. This DC is continuously charging the battery. The DC output from the battery is fed to a sine waveform inverter that converts it into AC and supplies it to the equipment.
The energy is regularly drawn from battery, and hence there no gap during the outage on the main. The battery stops getting charged now, but the UPS continues its power supply till the battery gets completely discharged.

Inverter – The main power AC is supplied to the inverter, and it is transformed into DC simultaneously, which keeps charging the battery continuously. There is a sensor and relay structure that always monitors the ON or OFF status of the main.
As soon as there is a power failure, the relay actuator activates the inverter switch. Every other action is similar to the UPS, but because of the sensor and relay process, there is a delay while activating the switch.
Circuitry dissimilarity
Circuits used in making UPS are very expensive than the ones used in an inverter. This is the reason why UPS systems are expensive.
UPS generally comprises:
Rectifier or charger – Rectifier transforms the AC current from the main to DC current, to charge the battery
Inverter – It converts the DC voltage from the battery to AC current, to the electrical equipment
Controller – It regulates the functions of both the rectifier and the inverter.
Inverter comprises:
Inverter – Firstly it converts AC of the main to DC for battery charging. Then it changes the DC power from the battery to AC current, and that flows to the electronic equipment
Controller – It manages the inverter functions

Mark out the dimensions of the DC fan on the outer cover and cut it out.

Install the DC fan using silicone gum and connect the negative cable of the fan to the extended negative cable of the UPS

The positive leg of the DC fan for this inverter is found on one of the cables that connects the motherboard to the front panel
