Well, prior to Lukaku's arrival, Rashford had already been touted as the next big thing.

Mou got Zlatan, thereby stunting whatever progress Rashford was making already. The media couldn't do much because it's Zlatan.

Then, as Zlatan's time came to an end, hopes went high again for Rashford, but Lukaku was selected instead and they were not happy with it for definite reasons (apart from the usual English media hype).

Stats don't tell the whole story, Lukaku wasn't playing well in matches and it gave them a stronger point on why he should be dropped. I remember it got so bad that Lukaku chose not to celebrate when he finally scored, which is one aspect of him that i actually admire, he put in work and clearly showed that he wanted to get better, but some things were just too tough for him to do despite all the work he put in. This was what they capitalized on.

Rashford on the other hand is clearly losing focus, and i think social media and the excess money is playing a huge role in that. If Rashford gets his head down and is determined like Lukaku did, he will be starting striker for United without media influence.
