Ser Arthur Dane "The Sword of The Morning" is the best swordsman in the Show Game of Thrones and the books. No one in the show living or dead could/can match him in a straight fight. Not Jamie, Jon, Arya or Oberyn. Jamie spoke of him with awe. The little that was shown about him in the "Tower of Joy" scene where he singlehandedly cut down every one of Ned Stark's men was simply exceptional! It is a testament to his skill being able to wield two swords at the same time with equal impact.

His description in the books confirms him as about the best and deadliest fighter.

Well, the show only revealed him as one who used spears, largely because of his opponent, Gregor Clegane (The Mountain). There's no way you'd say Oberyn's opponent was slow. He fought a huge human and made it very easy. Perhaps you should picture the Mountain vs Jon and find out what your mind tells you.

How they died or what led to their death shouldn't be put into consideration when deciding this. I believe, without a doubt that Oberyn is the best swordsman of the show, ego or not. His movement is like water and his handling skill could be likened to that of a Ronin, if not more. Others often combine force to wield their swords which makes it amateurish and somewhat predictable.

I'd rate Brienne above The Hound. Their fight wasn't really 'swordish' but more of brute force but she takes it for me. None comes close to Oberyn.

I don't think he was emotional as I watched the fight scene again last week. I observed that he was over confident and too proud especially when he brought down the mountain. He underestimated the mountain's strength and paid for it

I am of the opinion that Jon Snow's abilities with the sword is over hyped. There's no way Jon will best the Hound in a one on one fight neither do I see him winning against Brienne or Jamie. The mountain will kill him easily and Oberyn is just too good for Jon. Then please don't disrespect other fighters from the book because you didn't see them in the show.
