V.O- How did you get to know about the school of your choice?

ME- I got to know about the school while I was researching about schools for my academic pursuit, which started in 2017, using tools like Princeton review, usnews.com, www.univ.cc and I came up with the school.

V.O- How many schools did you apply to?

ME- I applied to two schools

VO- Why did you choose the school?

ME- SFA is a comprehensive institution dedicated to excellence in teaching, research, and scholarship. Also the school also has a well structured master’s degree program in physics. I also noticed the personal attention shown to me by the professors I reached out to them before I finally accepted the offer.

V.O- What are the courses you will be taking?

ME- Nuclear Physics, Atomic Structures, Classical mechanics, Electromagnetic waves, Advance Quantum Mechanics.

V.O- I see you got a GA, What are your responsibilities?

ME- I will be working with the undergraduate students in a specific course, I provide support for the faculty member in charge, and, in some cases, I will teach the course as the primary instructor, under the guidance of a faculty member.

V.O- Name some of your professors.

ME- Dr. Harry Downing, Dr. Dan Bruton

V.O- how long will you be in the US?

ME- 24 Months.

V.O- What is your research interest?

ME- My research interest is nuclear energy.

V.O- Why did you choose this course?

ME- Master degree in physics will broaden my horizon and will better position me in my field when I return to Nigeria because at the moment I head a project which aligns with my research interest, which entails generating clean power from water. This process produces H and O, the both known to aid combustion.

V.O- when did you graduate?

ME- Sept 2015

V.O- What have you been doing since 2015?

ME- After school I went for my 1-year compulsory service NYSC, where I serve as a Physics Instructor at XXXX , then I got an offer with XXXX in Lagos for the position of an electrical engineer.

V.O- What will you do after your studies?

ME- I will return to Nigeria to introduce the modern technologies of my profession into the power sector. Also Nigeria has a large population that would readily buy my power solutions ideas and I would like to be an authority in providing credible solutions to Nigerian industries.

V.O- Where will you be staying in the US?

ME- I will be staying within the school’s facilities.

V.O- did you take any standardized test.

ME- yes, I did, GRE and Toefl

V.O- What did your respective score?

ME- 287 and 83 respectively.

V.O- Have you travelled out before?

ME- No sir, because I have never had a reason to travel until after now. And it is important I do now because of my program.

2) the ideal contact person is the officer on your I20
3) Your sponsor . if you put self, make sure you go with your personal SOA else, put the details of your sponsor

During your interview, you can mention all your sponsors and present their respective SOA.

I am not sure the masters have seen this but the apprentice has and she would like to make the following observations

There are so many schools that are dedicated to ... and there are many schools that have well structured M.Sc programme in physics. The question is why this school, why does this school stand out for you amongst the rest, what is that special thing about this school that appeals to you, that prompted you enough to apply in the first place!
You get that answer and you put it in a sentence. End of story

I am not sure how I feel about this response. It's kinda hard to believe you'd do all these when you return. In two years time, who says your "power solutions ideas" won't be outdated, even if they are not, how are you so confident that your ideas would thrive in the market?
I am poking your response to show you it's not convincing at all. You even mentioned Nigerian industries, that's all encompassing! Try to carve a niche for yourself please.

What is the exact name of the school facility? The library is within the "school facilities", the cafeteria is within the "school facilities"
If it's a dormitory or an apartment within the school, call it by it's name please.

Good day NL family, I have just received my I 20 and I am supposed to travel alone but my wife has insisted that we go together with the kids. I have informed my school of my decision and they requested that I show proof of funds for additional 16k usd before another I20 will be issued to include my family member. I have 11 million in my account which I have used to obtain the initial I20. The only fund available now is my mum treasury bill investment of circa 15m naira.

My worries is that I am in my early 40's, will it sound nice to the school and the VO to be sponsored by aged parent considering my age and family status

You have to let her know that her joining you reduces your chances of approval by over 40%.(especially if you're going for a Masters program)

If she insists after this, then by all means proceed

The school should accept treasury bills . Attach it with your SOA and send!

To be on the safe side she should stay behind u need to show a strong tie here in your country,what if they ask u what ur wife will be doing there?left for me let her stay back she can join u with f2 visa after ur first semester.

It not really a matter of insisting but what is practical. You didnt state how many children you have? , to go with your whole family at once with you for interview can actually work against your home ties so tread carefully

Its good for families to be together yes. I support but think it through on how you present that ...except you have strong evidence to show how you will support the family . I would say that only when you should all go together

If you dont have strong financial strength then break it down, you go first and family can go after you for their visa. Having parents as sponsor well culturally its ok a bit

I do not agree to this and i would state my reason.

Visa is a 50/50 chance even if everything is done correctly.

Someone going for a Phd program without a wife and a kid was still granted Visa. I would ask how was he assessed based on home-tie or was it based on what he said by word of mouth? Once you can convince the VO even with your Family your visa can be approved.

He should do whatever he believes will work for him especially if he can afford it.

Visa Interview @Abuja Embassy today, May 21.

My appointment was for 7:30am and I got there few minutes before this time. First was the warm welcome received from the "staple-your-documents guys" who almost did not allow the cab I boarded to park before opening the car door. "Bros, there's a special order of arrangement required for your documents, else they will send you back" others too were saying different things...I just said OK while I walked away. On getting in, I was amazed at the number of people already there...Pastors with collars, Revd Fathers in their robes, VIO in uniform, grandpas and grandmas, people wearing all manners of job ID cards. I joined the queue, had some documents checked, proceeded for biometrics and all the other kind of checks. All these took time, but was very orderly.

Finally, we got in and joined the interview queue. While waiting, I was watching what was going on in windows 6, 7, 8 and 9 where interviews were conducted. While the VOs in the other windows took their time to hear what people had to say, before either granting or denying them, the lady in window 6 hardly spent 2minutes before issuing blue paper to people...she was just dishing it out in less than 2 minutes. I prayed not to be interviewed by her. As usual, in less than two minutes, she handed the woman in my front a blue paper and called for the next which happened to be me (perhaps, I prayed amiss). In my mind, I just said, "Holy Spirit, take control".

Me: Good morning ma

VO: Good morning (while she stretched her hand for my passport and I-20). She stared at my I-20 for about 5 seconds

VO: Why are you going to the US?

Me: I'm going for my Doctorate degree in Chemistry at Florida International University.

VO: How did you know about the school?

Me: I made a search online about my research interest and the research of Dr. X of Florida International University appealed to me the most...(I still had more to say but she interrupted with the next question)

The current trend says otherwise, sometimes it’s not always about preparation it’s about following the trends and looking at the numbers

They are humans! always remember that.

Congratulations. Blessed are those who believe the dreamer! I'm very happy when I see people reverence God as the source of their breakthrough or achievement. His hand and time are upon us, and with a faith as little as mustard seed, miracle can happen. Also, there is no need to be sorry for posting your transcript late. I personally encouraged some students to wait until they pick the visa before posting their transcript. I pray this phase of your life leads you to somewhere great!

I was a little agitated when I started reading the transcripts on this platform, especially the transcripts that were rejected late last year. I however kept reading, and again, Fairheart's post about seeing many visas approved encouraged me. The whole process, from start to getting the visa was a miracle only God could do. It took a while before I agreed to write GRE n TOEFL, after my masters degree, with what my eyes saw with researching in Nigeria, although I wanted a PhD, but Nigeria was a "NO" for me. I wasn't ready to read any serious "book" again too, so, I was just pursuing South Africa jeje for my PhD. My husband wouldn't agree with me on the SA prospect no matter how I talked about it. He just didn't like the country for anything.
After a while, I kept reasoning on what my friends had always told me about writing the standardized exams and applying to the US. I did and I was graced to talk to an advisor whose active research is a match to masters degree research. He agreed to supervise me and told me his research is a funded research. So I applied and was admitted and offered GA with stipends. Below was my conversation with the VO .
Me: Good morning
VO: Good morning, your Passport and i20 please.
Me: Okay, Here...

VO: Where are you going?
Me: I'm going to JSU for my doctorate degree in Chemistry.
VO: How did you get to know about JSU?
Me: I did an online search for schools with graduate research in Chemistry and then streamlined my search to schools with Natural Product Chemistry, and there came JSU and other schools I applied to.

VO: So, your focus will be Natural Product Chemistry
Me: Oh..yes

VO: Do you have a Professor to work with already?
Me: Yes

VO: His name?
Me:Prof...

VO: Did you apply to other schools?
Me: Yes, I named them

VO: I see you're fully funded
Me: Yes

VO: What will you do to maintain your scholarship status?

Me: I'll maintain an excellent performance in academics and research ( VO nods in affirmation)

VO: What have you been doing since you completed your Masters
Me: Been into research at my Supervisor's laboratory. I carry out experiments and analysis, write reports and help supervise the undergraduate students.

VO: Are you married? With children
Me: Married, Yes, with Children, No

VO: Will anyone be travelling with you?
Me: No ( at least, not now)

VO: I'll be approving your Visa, she gave me the white paper and told me to get my passport from the address indicated in 3 working days.

If you do what you're supposed to do, you will get your visa with or without financial aid. That is why we have a thread like this where we analyze transcripts and help people optimize their strategies. You choose to believe what you want to believe finally.

Please tell your wife to relax and let you get in first. As someone here have stated, going with your wife and kids could be seen as potential migration and, to be honest with you, this may cause your refusal. Leaving wife and children behind for now significantly gives you "strong home ties" which the US embassy is strongly looking for in every applicant of the US visa. I recently shared similar experience here and I am sure you read about what happened to the primary applicant and the dependents. They were refused--even though the primary applicant who's the husband has been to the US twice.

HOWEVER, this is just an advice and, maybe, my recommendation for you. That you appear for your interview alone or go with your family doesn't guarantee approval or refusal. Every case is different. What a VO saw in applicant A to refuse his visa may not been seen in applicant B--even when that thing is present. In the end, you gotta make your own decision and do what's best for you and your family. I look forward to seeing your visa approval transcript.

Do VOs give any regard to godfather during interviews?
Can one say his godfather is the sponsor?

Again, the section where they asked if you have worked or contributed to a social, professional body...Does not filling anything affect ones profile. I can't seem to remember being active in any such bodies or make i lie there?

You know the DS 160 ..what you fill , must be able to defend and sometimes, with proof.

Focus on what you have done and that's sufficient.

Kindly go back to the form and fill it . you are supposed to click a radio button for those details to come out.

Not filling that section in the eyes of the VO simply means you have no degree .
