Irele didn’t see the shooter on time. All she heard was Tobi screaming her name. Everything happened too fast for her to act right, to duck on time. She felt the effect of the attack before seeing the attacker.

Don, too, saw the thug just when Tobi noticed him. In short, it was the three of them who had seen the thug – Tobi, Don and Abubakar; but there wasn’t enough time to avert casualty. He saw the killer aim his gun at them and he acted as fast as he could. He pushed Irele away from harm’s way and took the bullet. One grazed his neck and the second lodged in his right shoulder. Blood spewed against the window glass and his gun fell from his hand. The shooter was indeed skilled; he didn’t even hit the glass. The bullets went to where they were sent. As he fell, he wondered if this was how he was going to die. He had always known that he would meet his end in a blaze of fire but he never imagined that it was going to be this way. Blood spread across his neck and chest and traced paths on the floor. He smiled; he was going to die a brave man. The lady was not hit.

He tried to fight the unconsciousness looming over him as he saw the woman bend over him. She was pressing on his wounds and crying. Why is she crying for me? She doesn’t even know me.

“Don’t worry,” he heard her say nervously, “you’re not going to die. I will not let you die. The bullets didn’t hit any fatal spot. You’re going to be all right, I promise. Just stay with me. Stay with me. You’re not going to die.”

To him, it was as if the woman was rambling incoherently. He wanted to tell her to be quiet but found speaking such a difficulty. As his light slowly dimmed, he heard Abubakar’s voice calling his name from the background.

Mortal Alliances

“Don!” Abubakar screamed.

“Irele!” Tobi screamed likewise.

Neither of them knew who was really hit between Irele and Don, but they didn’t wait to find out. They both turned in the direction of the shooter and attacked. Tobi picked one of the dead men’s guns and began to shoot blindly at the thug. Abubakar expended the bullets of one gun, threw it away and produced another one. The thug, on the other hand, hid himself safely behind the SUV with riddled bullet holes; all the glasses shattered. The man ducked behind the passenger’s door and returned occasional fires at the two men firing at him. Then he managed to get into the driver’s seat. He started the vehicle into reverse. He went backward for a few metres before turning around sharply and driving down the street in full speed. Tobi and Abubakar ran after him, shooting at the vehicle and its occupant. The car didn’t seem to feel the impact of their bullets as it sped down the deserted road. After about half a minutes when it was plain that they could not catch up again, they stopped. They were both breathing hard as they watched their common enemy slip through their fingers.

“Shit!” Tobi burst out heatedly. Then suddenly, he realized that he was still in danger. He wasn’t out of the woods yet. He turned around sharply and stared at the dark mouth of a pistol where death speaks. Abubakar was aiming his pistol at his nose bridge, just between both eyes.

“This is for killing my brother!” He was about to pull the trigger when Irele suddenly screamed from afar, she was running towards them.

“Stop!”

Tobi saw her and breathed a sigh of relief. He wasn’t relieved that she had saved him from being shot, he was mitigated with the fact that she was still alive. She wasn’t the one who got hit after all; it was the other guy. Abubakar turned around and asked her:

“Who the hell are you?”

“I’m his friend,” she replied, “Why are you trying to kill him?”

“Stand back,” he warned, “This isn’t any of your business, young lady.”

“Of course, it’s my business. This young man has been saving my life since yesterday.”

Abubakar looked at her with more interest, “Oh, you’re the pretty girl with whom he has been running around Lagos with one ridiculous document, I suppose.”

“Kill me now that you have the chance,” Tobi said, “The next time would not be in your favour. And trust me, I won’t hesitate to blow your brains out.”

“Tobi!” exclaimed Irele, “Where are your manners? You don’t disrespect someone holding a gun to your head.”

“Shut up, Irele, you don’t know what you are talking about. This bastard killed my wife.”

Abubakar turned sharply. It was as if he was being shot. It was as if he was the one being shot. Tobi’s words were like a bullet from an assassin’s gun. But before he would react, Irele said urgently, “There’s a man dying upstairs. He was shot in the neck. He’s losing a lot of blood!”

“Don!” Abubakar forgot about Tobi for the moment and rushed towards the restaurant. He was almost at the verge of losing his equilibrium. He couldn’t afford to lose Don too, not after losing his brother to Tobi. Don was the only person he had left in the world. The only person he cared about. He had thought the gunfight was going to be a walk in the park; he hadn’t thought for a moment that Don would be vulnerable against any other person except Tobi. But he had seen that the thug was highly skilled and intelligent. He climbed the steps in haste, praying that Don wasn’t dead.

He found him lying on the floor unconscious, blood was everywhere. It was almost like an abattoir in here. Don looked dead but when he brought his ear to his chest, the victim’s heart was still beating faintly. Don was barely alive alive. The girl had tried her best. She had tried to stop the flow of blood from his shoulder by placing a towel over the wound. But the towel was already soaked with blood. Her effort was almost futile. Abubakar released Don’s belt from his trousers and used it as a tourniquet against the flow of blood. That stopped the blood for the moment.

“We have to get him to a hospital.”

“We can get someone shot to a hospital!” he snapped at her, “Questions would be asked. Suspicion would fall on us.”

“Then what are we going to do?” she asked exasperatedly. “He must not die. This man saved my life. He took the bullet for me.”

“What!” Abubakar couldn’t believe his ears, “Why would he do that? Was he crazy or what.”

“That’s not important,” replied Irele, “How are we going to save him?”

“Get the bullet out.” Tobi said from the doorway.

“How are we going to do that?” she asked.

Tobi came in, and without seeking permission from Abubakar, he bent over the unconscious man and examined the wound.

“Miraculously, the bullet is lodged in his flesh, not the bone. But we have to get it out as soon as possible before he bleeds to death.”

“Do what you have to do,” Abubakar said, gritting his teeth. He could not believe he was in the same room with a potential foe. Well, he would allow him to save Don first, then he would blow his brains out. There was no amount of help he rendered that would absolve him of killing his baby brother.

Tobi nodded faintly at him and turned to Irele, “I think I saw a gas cooker in the small kitchen there. Put two knives on the stove and turn on the gas.” He faced Abubakar, “Go into the inner room, bring the pair of pliers on the mantelpiece.”

Abubakar shook his head and replied, “Go and get it yourself, I’ll wait here for you.”

“We’ve got no time for this!” said Tobi angrily, “This guy will die if I don’t attend to him fast. His breathing is shallow already!”

“Then I advise you get to work immediately,” replied Abubakar, raising his gun at Tobi again, “you die if he dies; it’s that simple.”

Tobi threw his hands up in frustration, rose up and went to fetch the pliers. His hatred for the arrogant Abubakar grew like yeast. He would really enjoy killing him after this job was done. He knew the guy he called Don was also working for him, but he had no interest in him. He was only assisting to buy time for himself and look for a chance to strike his major enemy. But while doing that, he was going to save the young man’s life. The guy didn’t really offend him; Abubakar was the real enemy here. As a matter of fact, Tobi knew he owed Don for taking a bullet for Irele. The unconscious guy might just be a good guy after all working for a devil like Abubakar.

“He should consider himself lucky for losing consciousness for what I’m about to do would cause him a lot of pains had he been sober.” Tobi acknowledged as he bent over Don once again.

“What are you planning on doing?” Abubakar asked.

“I’m going to pull out the bullet with this pair of pliers.”

Abubakar stood up immediately, “I can’t watch this. Do what you have to do, just don’t try anything stupid because I’m faster than you.”

“I seriously doubt that,” Tobi replied, “I hope we have a chance to put that to a test after I’m done.”

Abubakar didn’t give a reply. He turned around as Tobi began work.

“Don’t tell me you’re afraid of a little crude surgery.”

“I just hate seeing my friends in pain.”

“That’s so noble of you,” said Tobi sarcastically. He first of all searched for the bullet by digging his finger into the wound. He would have dug it out with his hand but for the blood that made it slippery and almost impossible to do. He dipped in the pliers, located the bullet, clamp the pliers around the circumference and made one swift pull. He came out with the bullet. It fell from the pliers and clanged against the tiled floor of the room.

“Irele, kindly bring one of the hot knives,” he called.

“And what’s that for?” Abubakar asked.

“Are you really that ignorant?” Tobi could not believe his ears.

“I’m only good with taking lives; I’ve never cared about saving one.”

Typical of a coward who delights in killing other people’s wives. The veins of Tobi’s neck stood out; he was almost losing control, but he had a job to do. He had to concentrate on what was at hand first. The bastard’s moment shall come later.

“The hot knife would be used to cauterize the wound. That would staunch the flow of blood. Like I already said, he will bleed to death if we don’t stop the flow of blood. He has lost too much blood already.” He placed the hot knife on the wound. There was the sound of burning flesh and frying blood; the blood boiled and congealed, the skin scarred and cooked. The blood flow stopped abruptly. But the wound looked quite ugly. Abubakar gritted his teeth as the job was being done. He wondered how Don would live with this kind of treatment.

“You’ve killed him, haven’t you?” Abubakar turned around.

Tobi shook his head, “He may be shot dead by an enemy as soon as he wakes up, but right now, he’ll live. He will live to die another day, just like you.”

“What about the second knife?”

Tobi smiled wickedly, “I wanted to use it on you but thought better of it, but unlike you, I don’t believe in stabbing people in the back. I promise you I’m going to stare at you in the eyes when I kill you.”

“We shall see,” Abubakar replied, unfazed.

“Now what are we going to do with him?” Irele asked.

“We have to get out of here,” Tobi replied, “This place isn’t safe.”

“Where would we go?”

“I have a place, a safehouse.”

“Then we should move immediately!” Irele said excitedly.

“I’m going nowhere with this madman,” said Tobi.

“Well, it’s your choice. You can decide to hang around and allow those idiots to regroup and finish you off, that’s your funeral; but don’t allow your pride to be the death of this beautiful young lady.”

“He’s coming along,” insisted Irele.

“My car is just down the street,” said Abubakar, “We have to carry Don there.”

“That’s not wise,” said Tobi, “Drive your car over here. We’ll have Don at the entrance of the restaurant by the time you reach here.”

“I think that’s a great idea,” said Irele. “We have to be fast. Time isn’t on our side.”

Abubakar stared from Irele to Tobi, debating whether to trust them with the suggestion. “Try anything funny and you’re both corpses.” He warned and left the room.

Tobi hoisted Don on his shoulder and followed Irele downstairs. He couldn’t believe he was now working with his enemy.

Abubakar insisted Tobi sat beside him as he drove the car; Irele and Don remained in the back. Abu knew that having Tobi behind him was dangerous. He could be shot in the spine by him. Although he didn’t think Tobi would take such a cowardly action, he still didn’t want to take any chance with a potential enemy. He placed his pistol on his right thigh as he drove on. One hand grabbed the gun while the other navigated the steering with care. He was watching Tobi from the corner of his eyes, expecting him to try anything silly. He sincerely wished Tobi realized that this was not the time to exact revenge; Don’s life was still at stake. They should get Don and Irele to safety first before they squared off. At the moment, they weren’t out of the woods yet.

“What is it about the red document?” Abubakar asked, “I guess that’s the cause of all these chaos going on.”

“You tell me,” Tobi glared at him. “You’re speaking as if you know nothing about it.”

“I know nothing about it.”

“At least your brother was honest. I guess you have a tattoo on your chest too.”

Abubakar frowned, “What nonsense are you talking about? Did you kill my brother because he had a random tattoo on his chest? When has having a tattoo on your body become a crime?”

“Your brother was a FAN, I’m sure you knew that.”

“What the hell is a FAN?”

“Federal Assassin Network.”

“My brother was an assassin?”

“Yes, like the bastard who shot your unconscious friend behind us. These assassins are well-trained to kill and follow orders without questions. They are a group that cuts across the whole federation and a ready to lose their lives in their missions. They are mercenaries, soldiers of absurdity. They live their lives on two principles: kill or get killed. They’ve been tasked with a new mission, get the red paper and kill anyone who attempts to stand in your way; hence why Irele and I have been under fire since yesterday.”

“What is your business with the document that you had too kill my brother over?”

“First and foremost, I didn’t kill your brother.”

Abubakar suddenly braked to a stop. “What!”

“I didn’t kill your brother,” Tobi repeated.

“You’re lying! That’s not the news I heard.”

“It’s the truth,” said Irele from behind, “He didn’t kill your brother. Your brother tried to kill. Tobi rescued me from him; he even tried to help your brother before he died.”

“What do you mean by ‘before he died’?”

“Your brother poisoned himself when I was questioning him.”

“I don’t believe you,” declared Abubakar, “I don’t believe either of you. You’re both liars.”

“You know I’m speaking the truth,” said Tobi, “Your brother chewed on cyanide because he didn’t want to reveal something he obviously knew.”

“My brother was shot in both arms, was that the work of cyanide too?”

“I admit, I shot him, but I didn’t shoot anywhere fatal in him. I only shot him to render him defenseless. You know the drift.”

“I still don’t believe you,” he started the car and continued the journey, “What is it about the red document, and what’s your involvement in everything going on?”

“I have nothing to explain to you,” replied Tobi, “You don’t believe me, so what is the essence of explaining anything to you? Besides, I’m going to seize every chance I get at killing you. You seriously don’t think I’ve forgotten the past, do you?”

Abubakar stared at him and smiled faintly. That smile was daring, as if he knew that Tobi was too weak to take him on. “I wish you all the best.”

They continued the rest of the journey in silence. The safehouse was in the heart of the heart of Lagos. They took about twenty turnings before arriving at the location. The house was a bungalow in an estate of about two hundred houses of exact designs. It was a low-cost estate built by the Lagos State government and sold to a selected two hundred families. Abubakar had bought this one from a family before moving over to Abuja. The house had been perfect for hiding because the evidence of purchase didn’t contain his name but that of the respectable family he had bought it from. Besides that, it was almost impossible for them to be located here. This building was in the middle of one hundred and ninety-nine other bungalows. However, Abubakar still had to observe the surroundings carefully before getting out of the car. The time was about a quarter past two when they all entered the house. The interior of the house was well-furnished. Abubakar had brought only his clothes when he bought the house. The furnishings had been exactly as the old family had left it. Abubakar had not only bought the house but also everything it contained. He had no time to start setting up furniture and drapes.

Don was laid in a bed in one of the bedrooms. He was breathing fine now and sleeping soundlessly. He would live. The rest of them went to the living room.

“I’m famished,” Abubakar said. He got up and went to the kitchen. He pried open some cans and made some quick food. He brought three plates to the sitting room. He dropped two on the table and balanced himself behind one. He didn’t invite Tobi and Irele to eat but the two attacked their food voraciously; they didn’t need any invitation. Whatever it was that they had eaten, they found it delicious and satisfactory. Tobi and Irele were too hungry to pick menus; the crazy killer had denied them of their breakfast in the morning when he shot at Tobi.
After the meal, Abubakar stared at the document on the table and said, “What is contained in that document?”

“Nobody knows.” Replied Irele.

“Then let’s find out,” he reached for the red document but Tobi quickly snatched it away.

“What do you think you’re doing?”

“Release the document.” Abubakar seethed.

“Make me.” Tobi replied, his eyes burning fury.

“I’m tired of your nonsense,” Abubakar drew out his gun, Tobi quickly produced his pistol too. Both men were aiming their weapons at each other, their guns like mirror-images as they both threatened.

“What is it with you men and violence? Can’t you ever reach an agreement without resorting to violence?”

“Tell your boyfriend to release the document.” Abubakar declared.

“I don’ trust you.” Said Tobi, “You might be a FAN, too, just like your brother. Wake up, Irele, this bastard killed my wife. How do you know he would not blow our brains after getting his hands on the document?”

“I assisted you in killing those men after your life, brought you into my secret chamber, fed you, and you still think I’m one of those silly assassins? Don’t you think you would have died if I had wanted you dead? I gave you food and you ate it without even giving it a second thought.”

“I ate your food because I knew you would not poison it. Of all vile things that you are, I don’t see you as a coward who would poison another person. Just like me, you’re not the poison kind, you make your statement with a trigger, you write on the wall with blood. Besides, I was damn hungry to say no to the food.”

“To hell with you,” said Abubakar, “I’m nothing like you. I’m not a soldier, I’m a warrior. I don’t take a knife to a gunfight. I’m the first and last a dealer in copper; the bullet is my coin, the pistol my bank.”

“Okay, both of you should lower your guns right now!” Irele ordered.

It was as if they didn’t hear her speak. Both men were still glaring at each other, each one studying the finger of the other on the trigger.

“I said lower your guns!” she was furious.

And so, slowly, the men lowered their weapons, but they were sill glaring at each other.

“Good,” said Irele, “Tobi, if you don’t trust Abubakar, I know you trust me. We’ve run from flying bullets together. You’ve gone through a lot to keep me alive. But we can’t continue to run without knowing what we are up against. We have the right to know what is chasing us, and I believe the answer lies in that document you are holding. We need to know what it contains.”

“I agree with you,” replied Tobi, handing her the document. “Open it and tell us what you find.”

Both Tobi and Abubakar sat in a single-seater on either side, facing each other, while Irele sat in the double-seater and tore out the nylon on the document. They all held their breaths as Irele unfolded the paper within. What they must have imagined it contained, what information they must have thought it possessed – the paper revealed something entirely different. On one side of the paper was a cryptic message.

They heard Don’s sudden scream from the bedroom.
