Something scary happened to me today. Please GAZZUZ or anyone else, can you recommend a trusted brake master in lekki/Ajah area?

I was ascending lekki ikoyi bridge today. There was a bit of traffic from church goers and suddenly, my brake failed. I step on the break pedal but the pedal just keeps going down, no stopping, car was rolling. It was scary. I used the handbrake to successfully stop the car . Made some weird noise and that was it.

Still drove home with it without any other event( stopped at two traffic lights afterwards, brake worked fine)

@Gazzuz and everyone, I have an issue with my car. My car battery runs down and doesn't charge properly. I have taken it for checks with the rewire vendor and he assured me that the alternator is working fine after he ran a few manual checks on it.. He suggested the battery might be bad so I replaced the battery last week, however the battery is down already. Kick starter had an issue and I replaced it already. What could be the issue please.

How did the rewire check the alternator to confirm its okay or bad? Most times those guys use just bulb or a tester light and also touch the pulley of the alternator with a spanner to see if it magnets before putting jumping to conclusions and condemning stuffs.

I had same issue with my car last year and ended up changing 3 alternators and killing 2 brand new batteries in less than 6 month until those guys made me a DIY by force and I ended up fixing it myself. Mine had short circuit from the alternator to the battery and some ground issues cussed by corrosion. I bought a wire and ran it from the alternator to the battery and cleaned all ground connections and problem was solved.

You can do a simple test on your alternator and battery yourself. Get a meter and set it to DC 15v or there about to read and diagnose your charging system. Place the + or red pin of the meter on the + side of your battery head, and the - or black pin of the meter on the -side of the battery. If it reads 12.7v after parking for a long time (probably overnight) the next step is to check the capacity of the battery to start the car. If it reads below 12.7V then you might need to charge the battery.

Ask someone to start the car for you while you check the reading on your meter. Make sure the voltage does not drop below 10.5v (the gurus should correct me if I'm wrong). If it drops below that then you might need a new batter or charge the battery. If the reading is okay, then move over to next step.

Step 2: With the engine running, check the charging current with your meter. It should be reading 14.7v and never exceed 15v(check your cars repair manual to be sure of your cars charging current). If the reading is okay, turn on your A/C, Full Head light, radio, wiper, defroster and all power consuming stuffs in the car. The voltage should not drop below 13V. If it does, rev your car a little bit to 2,500RPm to see if it improves.

If the voltage does not get to 14.7v without load and or drops below 12.7v, its time to move to step 3.

Step 3: Now you need to be a DIY for this depending on the car and the kind of alternator you have.
Check the battery terminal for corrosion, check and read all the ground connections, check the fuses, and read the alternator itself.

Step 4: Let's assume everything is fine with the charging system, ask you rewire to check if there is something that stays on when the car is on. You can also do that with your meter if you know how to use it.

Step 5: Check the kick starter, it could be a culprit too.

The ogas can help you further, I'm just a DIY.

Step 2 is actually a range of 13.5-14.7v. A steady 14.7 will overcharge and destroy the battery so it fluctuates down to 13.5 when battery is full. It also does this regulations to limit the alternator output, if not the voltage will go higher as Engine rpm rises up and come down with low rpm.

Only the kick starter draws power directly from the battery via a relay from the ignition switch. Every other thing goes through the car's power regulator. Remember that the car power system is based on 12v, so a direct 14.7 from alternator or 12.7 from battery will damage or may not run the car.

Have you noticed that even when there is no Kickstarter connected, any attempt to start the car turns off power to some accessories such as Radio and power outlets. The power regulator saves some power by turning of these accessories and back again after starting.

Thanks for the clarification.
I agree with you.
Over charging is equally as bad as under charging that's why all alternator have the regulator to prevent the alternator from continuous charging.
Guninerma231 should be able to pinpoint what's wrong with his charging system instead of allowing this test bulb guys toy with his car same way they did mine.

Hi Gazzuzz, I have been servicing my 2009 Toyota Matrix with the Mobil 1 5w30 (Nigeria’s green gallon). Would love to switch to the recommended 0w20 or 5w20.

Engine is under 90,000km, in good shape. No shortage whatsoever.

Please advice, so I can make my order. Thanks

Clear the codes and re-scan. The temp sensor code will mean u driving the car without a temp reading.
