OMG!

I just saw this thread now while I was searching for info concerning MATLAB...

Perhaps if I had seen this thread earlier, I would have done better in GRE.... Well its all good... I had 309 and was able to secure an Erasmus Mundus scholarship though.. I still have plans to do my PhD in America sha and I dont plan on rewriting the GRE smiley

Please if anyone has a link to free and good MATLAB video tutorials, please share with me..

Hi. Congrats on your scholarship. What course are you going for?

Best way to enhance your matlab skills is to pick a project online and refer to online articles and video tutorials on YouTube or mathworls to find your way around.

I admire your guts. For you to have a BS in Geology and targeting an MS in Computer Science shows you are a very impressive student.

Have you taken prerequisite courses in computer science from your undergrad? If no, that might be a stumbling block for you. If you haven't done the prerequisites, you might want to take either of these two options;

1. Apply to a college that will take it slowly with you
Since you are a switcher, target schools that take a very lenient approach for switchers like you. Some of them allow you to take prerequisites while you complete your master's degree while others allow you take your masters for three years, instead of two years.

I will also advise you throw in one or two Ph.D. apps because it may give you enough time to learn the concepts very well

2. Use this gap year to take prerequisites
This option is more expensive but it makes sense. You can use the gap year to take prerequisite courses from online community colleges or from college extension programs. Once you get them done, you can then apply to solid two years programs with or without loans (it will pay off if you attend a top top computer science college). I don't consider Northeastern to be a top computer science college so I won't advise you to take that deal. You will get cheaper deals from better computer science colleges if you do your homework.

I won't advise you to take route 2 because it may be a lot of work for you because you will have to combine GRE study with taking prerequisites. Also, it will be an expensive option and from your comment, I don't think you are prepared to pay $800 per course (and you willl need to take 4 courses at least).

So, my ultimate game plan for you include;

1. Ace your GRE and TOEFL and target 315+ and 100+ respectively. You strike me as a brilliant student so I don't think this will be an issue for you if you put in the needed dedication. If you score below this threshold, you will sell yourself short and you will attend colleges that do not befit your status as a first-class student.

2. Target schools that will take it slow with you and at least two PhD programs. Look for schools that are lenient to switchers.

3. Make sure you can demonstrate to the admissions officers that you will not struggle with CS modules. You can show this through previous technical projects OR completed prerequisite courseworks with good grades. If you have a particular area of interest, that will sell you more by showing your work in those areas

Any more advice from this, I will charge you my consulting fee grin grin grin grin

I sent you a mail boss....no reply yet

Semester ➡ Fall 2020 ( due to people saying fall has more funding opportunities, previously had Spring 2020 in mind).

I need some criticisms, advice and contributions.

Vanderbilt and University of Virginia is too ambitious. Look for more safe schools. It will be hard to get into UVA if you don't have MSc.

If you've got ample resources and are willing to take a chance, you could still try Spring 2020. If it doesn't work out, then you go for Fall 2020.
Someone here got full funding for Spring 2019, for a Masters program (although, having a much stronger CGPA).
Ace your GRE and TOEFL and contact potential supervisors. Their response should hint you on whether to apply for this coming Spring or not.

Cheers!

Hello house, fall 2020 aspirant.
Profile:

BSc 2.87/5 Microbiology

MSc 4.67/5 Environmental and Public Health Microbiology

Target GRE Score 330/340

Target IELTS Score 8/9

Applying for an MSc in Data Science, applying to mid-ranked schools with average tuition prices. Have a little programming experience, not much work experience in IT and I'm learning everything else I feel would help.

Anyone made a switch of this nature and how does my profile look...I'd appreciate all the help I can get. Looking to get some form of financial aid.

Good morning, everyone.

I'm new to the thread.
I've been reading the last 100 pages for the past couple of days.
Thanks for all your input. I've learnt a lot here.
Congratulations to all who aced their exams and those that have gotten admitted already.

I just graduated and will be going for service in November. I want to use the next 6 months to prepare for GRE and write by December or January.

It's interesting to know that one can do a PhD without necessarily going for Masters. This is just my plan.

If you're in Benin City and looking for a reading partner, please, connect.
Thank you.

Good evening everyone. I am a graduate of human physiology from Unilorin. A friend told me about threads on nairaland like this. I want to apply for Ph.d in Physiology/neuroscience/molecular biology in American schools. I graduated with Second Class Upper (3.8/5). Do I stand a chance for scholarship? Can I get into top 50 universities for these disciplines? Thanks.
