he and his battalion were to unleash bombs on the bokoharam but he ran away meaning his troops did same leaving the artillery soldiers vulnerable.

I've lost two uncles who are surveyors (they go to monitor the situations before ambush) soldiers are at serious war with those folks.
all in all, they've been degraded much more than it was in 2017..

They are not called surveyors but Recons. They are a unit embedded in the Infantry Corps with special skills to operate well ahead of the FOB and into 'enemy territory' to observe, record and report enemy operations. It is the most dangerous tasking in the Infantry Corps and only second to the work of Sappers in the Engineers Corps. In bad conflicts the casualty rate is almost 100 percent. They are the ones usually seen captured and promptly beheaded.

The Artillery Corps on the other hand has 'Observers' or spotters who typically take the safe, forward high ground to direct artillery fire and observe enemy movements and the effectiveness of the deliveries.

It is not normal for artillery units to be operating in close proximity to the enemy to be overrun easily. This is not right. The kill box of the smallest artillery piece we had the 105mm was 12 kilometers. In between that unit and the enemy will be several layers of infantry and armoured units. The idea being that as the army is in retreat the artillery moves first to set further back and give cover fire to the armoured units and infantry. That is how it was done back then.

Artillery units are not at the cutting edge of hand to hand combat. That is not their primary training. They have small arms but their proximity is their defence and protection. You donot want the enemy to get at your artillery to silence or capture it. It appears NA doctrine is changing.
