wow things have really changed since I got my F1 visa almost 20 years ago...

thank you so much to everyone that contributes on here. I used a lot of the information from this thread to prepare my sister for her interview. she has been visiting the US almost every year since she was a handheld baby. I will try to give as much of a transcript as possible to give back in my little way.

background: undergraduate, sponsored by parents who live in Nigeria. i20 deficit - $18,200, SOA belonging to our dad: around $40k for the past 6 months

greetings and passed VO her i20
VO: Why did you choose business administration?
A: she gave her reasons and said she will be focusing in Human Resources
VO: when last did you visit the US and for how long
A: last year and for two months
VO: Why did you stay for two months
A: for Christmas and to see sister (me) who had a baby
*tried to give documentation for birth of her niece and the VO pushed it back*
VO: what does she do
A: gave answer
VO: what company
A: forgot and hesitated
VO: what are your plans after graduation
A: to return to Nigeria and work for a few years before getting MBA
VO: unfortunately you don't qualify for the visa

To applicants:
If you have any immediate family member here, please remember all their basic info, where they work, how many kids, address, immigration status and how they got it, etc.

If you are planning to come and study and have all your money, please apply to schools in Canada as backup so these people don't delay your life.

If you have no travel history, fear not, because as you can see travel history doesn't equal visa.

He didn't collect any document from her apart from i20 and seemed to be hung up on the fact that she spent 2 months here on holiday when she was given a two year visa and has been to the US at least 15 times, as well as other countries. If they are discriminating against non-STEM degrees, well that's just hilarious. We won't be reapplying and will try the more peaceful, serene and happy Canada. grin

Good luck to all and thank you for sharing all your experiences.

The number 1 requirement for a US non-immigrant visa is that you have something in your country that will compel you to return after your visit to the US. There are a few issues with this transcript:

How long did your sister say she would spend in the US when she first got the visa? Too often Nigerians treat the B1/B2 visa as an entry permit to stay however long they wish. If your sister claimed she was going for a 2 month stay at her visa interview, she would have been denied. If she said 2 weeks, then stayed 2 months, that’s a big trust issue too.

The fact that your sister spends that much time in the US on a visit suggests she’s not doing anything serious in Nigeria that will compel her to return after her studies.

Sometimes these visa denials are not rocket science.

VO: Why did you choose this school?
i: I chose GSU for three reasons
First, the School offer program on human rights and social work within International & Domestic contest
Second, the school have education exchange program that allow me to learn from top social agency
Third, I was awarded scholarship which cover Tuition for the program

VO: What would this program do for you?
i: It will enable me to take offer from top organization that provides aids/reliefs for IDP
VO: Did you apply to other schools?
i: Yes
VO: Mention them
i: OU & UNCG
VO: How do you intend to sponsor your program?
i: I was awarded scholarship that covers Tuition
VO: I can see some deficit here
i: Yes, other expenses are to be sorted by my uncle and from my personal savings
VO: Starring at the SOA
i: I quickly mentioned the name of my uncle
VO: you will need to provide Six months of SOA for all accounts, as one of the SOA was printed in March
i: I will do the needful
VO: I hope you know that you will be ban to enter US if you provide fake documents
i: Sure, I know
VO: issued yellow paper and asked re-submit 6 months( end in May) submit original SOA to DHL

THE ISSUES
I had deficit of $20k
Uncle account $ 20.2k
My account $1k as at May end, while i submitted account till June 9 which is around $7k

VISA REFUSED

I would like to change sponsor since the account may not
What are best ways to re-fire

Many thanks.

You obviously do not have the funds to sustain your stay in the US.

Your deficit is $20k, you’ve stated your uncle as your primary sponsor. His 6 month account is worth $20.2k. What you’ve said is that your uncle will give you everything in his account for your first year of school. So how will your uncle survive with his family?

You state that you’re the secondary sponsor. As of May, you had only $1k in your account, upped to $7k by June 9. That does not cover half the deficit of your first year. Since you won’t be working a full time job in the US, you technically can’t sponsor yourself at all.

It’s easy to see why you were denied.

Dude you need to chill she's 17 years old and has always had a valid US Visa through dropbox with my parents. Also her previous stays have ranged from 10 days to two months.

I shared her transcript to help and because I used that of others, not for you to be passing judgment on a minor. Don't bring your Nigerian bashing near me, you don't see me acting like it's a do or die affair so respect yourself.

What's not rocket science is reading before being hasty to make judgment. Summer break is a little under three months and on many occasions they've spent up to two months here before going to other countries AND were still able to renew their Visa.

1. I didn’t judge. I simply shared an opinion on why your sister was likely denied a visa. That is the purpose of this thread. Others will learn from it.

2. Her being a minor has no bearing on whether she gets a visa or not.

3. the fact that she’s always had a visa through Dropbox has no bearing on whether she qualifies for a non-immigrant visa or not.

4. The misuse of the Dropbox is perhaps why it’s been suspended indefinitely for Nigerians alone. There are several examples on the childbirth thread of people who’ve always had visas via Dropbox who were denied on their next interview for very similar reasons to your sisters’.

I understand that feelings are raw and to be honest, I feel very sorry for her. But decisions like this are based on practical realities, not emotions.

Hello.. Please av been a silent follower of this page... This is my first post and My interview was on June 4th and that was actually my third interview... Me: during my third year at Federal University of Technology, Minna, professor John Doe visited my school for a maths symposium and I got to meet him and I have been following his various publications and have been corresponding with him since then, due to my interest in the methods of solving partial differential equations with improved algorithms.

Vo: so what will this degree do for you?.
Me: okay, my aunt heads the Human resource unit of the CBN and she's informed me of ongoing recruitment of young graduates with advance degree in Maths and Statistics to work in their Research and Development departments, also my uncle who is my sponsor is a data scientist and I have been working partime for him as a data analyst all along, and this degree will improve me and get me closer to my long term goal of being a successful data scientist.

Vo: good, so have you ever been out of the country before?
Me: I haven't got a reason to until now

Vo:how many schools did you apply to and name then
Me : four schools and I named them

Vo: who's paying for your studies
Me: my uncle

Vo: do you have his bank statement
Me: yes I do

Vo: hand them over pls
Me: I did and kept praying as he briefly checked

Vo: am going to approve your visa but I'll keep hold of your uncle's statement, if it turns out a fake statemnt, I'll ban you for life, do you still want me to continue?..
Me: sure, pls continue

Vo: hands the the two white papers and another paper where he marked administrative processing and told me to keep my i-20 cos I'll need it when I eventually get to the US

I simply walked away and has a mixed feeling... If I should be happy or I be scared...

Pls house, its been 2weeks and am still on AP, I don't know what's happening, the balance on the account is 8m and the deficit on my i20 is 7m, even now more funds have entered the account, am just scared of this AP, pls is anyone in the same shoe with me cos I feel alone, always refreshing the CEAC site every 10mins, pls help me read and tell me what I should expect... The rules have since changed. Sorry.

Non immigrant visas are not meant for folks to spend lengthy summer breaks all the time.

Lol @ raw feelings. Please don't feel sorry for her, she will study in the right country for her. Multiple visits to the US does not make it her birthright to study here but I take exception to you claiming she committed fraud when my mum who came with her just renewed her B visa at a face to face interview so your point is....?

Did you see the travel dates they put on their visa application? No, but you assumed because...?

Be patient. The VO told you the visa is approved. Unless the SOA was fraudulent, you should be ok. Isn’t there an email or number you could call? I’d try that if I were you.

You were too hasty. I didn’t accuse your sister of fraud at all. I talked about the issue of ties to home country only.

If you got your f1 visa 20 years ago, your parents are probably well in their 60s or older. It’s far easier for them to get visas than a 17 year old.

Frankly I get the feeling you’re one of those from a wealthy family who have always had entry visas by Dropbox and treated overseas “summer vacations” (we don’t have summer in Nigeria) as a birthright. It must be a shock to realize the US immigration system is no respecter of persons. Good luck.

If you had not generalized and claimed she abused her visa we won't be having this conversation. Her transcript has been critiqued and I gave her feedback as well and told her she should have been on her A game. Your first comment was not to help anyone but to accuse a total stranger, and that's not ok.

She spent 2 months on a vacation. The VO specifically pointed that out. You have no idea what he was looking at on his screen. Being on an A game is of no use if the VO isn’t convinced you’ve used your visas appropriately.

Either way, the interview is done. And we aren't even trying to pursue this further so why all this? It's judgmental, unsolicited, and you did generalize. Who does all this help?

Thanks for your kind gesture, I really appreciate your effort, I will appreciate it according to my pocket (hope I have not crossed my boundary)

Intending Transcript

; Good morning
Vo : Good morning, pass me your passport and i20
Vo : why are you going to the US
I: To obtain my Professional Science Master in Geographic Information System at Eastern Illinois University
Vo:What has changed about your last application
I:Then I was unable to express myself better on the class I would be excited to attend. Now I realized that I have the courage to let you know that I would be excited to attend the classes on Remote sensing because it would be taken by Prof. ABC, and that course would give me the edge to succeed in what I planned to do in the nearest future as I want to use the knowledge acquired To help Nigeria in many different fields where we are lagging in it application, fields like crime analysis, farming, urban and regional planning and many more.
Vo: what will this program do for you?
I: it would enable me to tackle major problems that are facing Nigeria in different fields and also it would enable me to establish my consultancy firm where I would become a consultant to different parrastatals like anti crime department, agriculture companies, government agencies etc
Vo:Do you write any standardized test
I: Non was required for my intending program but I wrote TOEFL and I scored 85
Vo; Do you have a wife?
I: no
Vo: Do you have kids
I: no
vo: Have you traveled before?
I: No, Until now, I never had any reason to do so
Vo: How do you intend to fund your study
I: My father would take care of that and I would support that with my savings over the years
Vo: Do you have any evidence of his account?
I: yes, ( pass his SOA)

Please help me to peruse and scrutinize it, I will welcome your contributions and corrections...
Thanks for your kind gesture
Yes, you crossed the boundary, I have never been so insulted in my life grin

I had to go and swallow fufu so I can be strong enough for your "super transcript" grin grin grin

Personally, I don't like long responses to questions. They give me headache. 2-3 powerful sentences can be more effective/ convincing than 6-7 wordy sentences without bearing.
I'm not sure how I feel about your response to what has changed about your last application. You are saying so much and saying nothing at all. In fact you are giving yourself away.
So what has changed so far?
Perhaps your confidence has improved
Perhaps now you are more capable of articulating your study plan or career goals.
I pray you understand what I just did.
What would this program do for you?
It's not what this program will help you do for Nigeria. Put yourself first, be selfish here for goodness sake grin
Using what you have written, this degree will probably help you establish a consulting firm upon your return.
So why do you want to establish a consulting firm?
You find that genuine answer and you put it in one or two sentences. End of story!
We both know your dad won't be spending so much money and you won't be forfeiting your savings simply because you want to get a degree to "help Nigeria" . The VO knows that too grin
TOEFL is a standardised test, so you ought to respond Yes! I sat for TOEFL and had a total score of 85 grin
The question isn't if standardised tests were required or not.
Again, I pray you understand what I have just done grin
Please learn to answer EXACTLY what you are asked. If the VO needs more information, he or she would definitely ask grin
Do not give out unnecessary information simply because you feel pressured.
How do you intend to fund your study?
My dad will take care of the expenses but I also have personal savings to support myself.
It's thesame response you wrote earlier ooo but I decided to package it for you grin grin grin
Please I hope your SOAs are in order. I prefer most recent 6 months(it shows great financial credibility)
Furthermore, your transcript doesn't include certain common interview questions
Why did you pick this school
What other schools did you apply to
Please anticipate more questions and brace up for impact!
Please let me know if you require additional information.
May the force be with you!

Basic info as in my i20 form
Admission: University of Oregon
Program: LLM in Peace studies and Conflict Resolution
Scholarship: $21,741 (50%) out of $43k tuition fee + 18K living expenses = $40,443 (Deficit)

____________________________________________________

VO: Good Morning
Me: Good Morning

VO: pass me your I-20 and What course are you going for in the US
Me: LLM in peace studies and Conflict Resolution at the University of Oregon, Eugene, Oregon.

VO: Why did you choose this course?
Me: firstly, it aligns with my career goal, I want to be an expert in humanitarian law and conflict resolution via ADR and legal settlements other than adversarial litigations.
This program also appeals to my long term career goal as a peace policy expert and diplomatic peace negotiator, so this program will be a huge plus in my career goals of being diplomatic peace negotiator with a conscious bias in legal settlements via ADR mechanisms.

VO: Why did you choose the University of Oregon?

Me: I chose the University of Oregon because
Firstly, I get to acquire an LLM in Peace Studies and Conflict Resolution and not an MA. Uoregon is amongst the few schools that have the whole department in law faculty dedicated to the study of this program, with others, you can only get a certificate, or few electives courses or at most an MA.
I am excited at the opportunity of working with Prof Dianne Baxter and Shaul Cohen, especially the former who is a world-renowned expert on the conflict resolution her treaties on Israeli-Palestinian conflict has always been topnotch. She is the Author of “From refugee to displaced citizen: The Evolving discourse of Palestinian Peace Making”; “Islamization and Westernization, the challenges of Gender traditions.”

Secondly, UOregon curriculum is intimate and intense, cos there is a Dispute Resolution Centre - which is integrated conflict management; mediation; legal settlement and security centre right in the heart of the law faculty.

Thirdly UOregon the program comes with optional internship paths in specialized research in sub-Saharan conflicts; Israeli-Palestinian conflicts; Northern Ireland conflicts; Collaborative governance and public policy studies and family mediation internship.
Also, UOregon offers multiple training in public policy, collaborative negotiations and consensus-building which is very exclusive to them.

VO: when did you graduate
Me: August 2014

VO: what have you been doing since graduation?
Me: immediately after my graduation I headed to the Nigeria Law School for a year’s program upon which after completion I was called to the Nigeria Bar in 2015. Afterwards, I enrolled for the compulsory NYSC scheme where I served with XYX …. A peace and dev NGO, I rounded up the scheme in 2016, after which I joined the law firm of XYZ till date.

I also consult and volunteer for a number of international NGOs, African law foundation -where I serve as the coordinator for Northern Nigeria and African Centre for conflict..... Which I co-founded and currently serve as the Director.

VO: what do you plan to do after graduating from UOregon
Me: After my graduation, I plan to return back to Nigeria to resume my positions as a Director at African centre for conflict ………. ….. …and also work and apply to be a Partner in xyz law firm where I currently to work, I will also simultaneously seek appointments with AU and other relevant think tanks in Nigeria, Africa and the world at large.

VO: how many schools did you apply too and name them
Me: 4 more schools Upenn, Pennstate, Indiana University and Uni of Birmingham in the UK.

VO: did you write any standardized test
Me: yes, I wrote IELTS, my score was 7.0

VO: Are you married
Me: No

VO: do you have any child
Me: No

VO: how will you be paying for your studies?
Me: I have a 50% LLM tuition scholarship and the remaining tuition plus my living expenses will be taken care of by the study scholarship I got from my uncle and mentors’ company. (I have a SOA with a balance over N70 M and a reference letter from the bank and the award letter from the company.)

VO: pass me the statement of account
He flipped through and returned

VO: Say no more, I will be approving your visa…. (….God willing)

Reads good. You certainly know your stuff. I would be more concise though especially the answer on why you chose the school. Other than that... good job!

Pls is it so difficult for some in the US to help pay the Sevis fee..... Most of the WU outlet entered don't seem to get a grip of it even after presenting the coupon form.

What could be the reasons or are their specifics

thanks for your input. lol @ drilled. I remember my time sha, over preparation nearly wounded me cheesy

I advise she reapplies and then appear before a VO more prepared. She has an incredible travel history and she only needs to make a case for her reason to study in the U.S. She needs to be confident, factual and convincing. She also needs to make the VO understand it was a summer vacation(alongisde her sister giving birth to a baby) and her high school was on holiday. Also, put God first.

It isn't difficult for someone to pay the SEVIS for you in the US. A friend in the US could help me do mine through Western Union without any hassles.

When I visited the U.S last summer, I stayed for about 3months and that did not stop me from getting my F1 visa some days ago. I think she needs to be prepd more and try to reapply - don't give up on schooling in the US, it will be more convenient for the two of you.

She just needs to be able to give a concrete explanation why she stayed that long. As far as the length of stay is within the law, the VO needs to be sure that it was not because of immigrant intent. She should have explained better when she was given the opportunity.

Either way, the interview is done. And we aren't even trying to pursue this further so why all this? It's judgmental, unsolicited, and you did generalize. Who does all this help?

I think u r taking it too far while subtly insulting most people on this thread with the "it's not a big deal" card.

U said d US is not a big deal, yet u have spent 20years there. Everyone on this thread thinks d US is a big deal, that's y they contribute. But not everyone's life depends on the US. It's a big deal to the girl n is certainly a big financial deal to her father who is only coughing out 18k per year out of his 40k SOA. Even you, u r this worked up about what u feel is not a big deal. You even went as far as prepping her with questions u gleaned from this thread, but somehow still said it's not a big deal.

Times have changed and TWoods have provided a plausible reason, prepare the girl again and try at least one more time.
