I'm. Yoruba but I'm ashamed of Yoruba movies. I used to think that Igbo films of those days were promoting sexual immorality, but the current crop of Yoruba actors have taken it to the lowest low. It's even apparent that most of the Yoruba actresses are prostitutes and use film making as an opportunity to market their product. If I had my way, I will close down the Nollywood for one year, so that all intending film producers or script writers could go through a re-orientation on moral values. |

YourNemesis:The problem may be the greed and selfishness that wants to do all instead of collaborating with competent Yoruba playwrights, script writers or translators of English scripts. Is that not what Hollywood does? Even oyinbo musicians don't write all their songs. We need to stop chasing money senselessly. Unlimitk2:Obviously u are a liar and a bigot at the same time. I don't care whether u are a atheist or not, if u like worship sun, that is your problem. But ur hatred toward Islam is glaring and it will soon consume u and render u into subhuman. Purge ur mind of hatred and have a peaceful life. |

weyreypey:Alright, it's not about only Yoruba movies. It's all nollywood in general. Their movies is all shiiiit most times. The only thing is, it's wrong to fault only yoruba movies, if you want to fault any movie. You have to fault all of them because one is not better than the other. |

weyreypey:Lol, i read the novel too many years ago, and some other novels from the man too. He's a great writer. I don't read novels but was surprised the way all my attention was caught when i took to read his novels then. I will have to buy them and keep for future purpose. Not only him though, most yoruba novels i read in the past are like that, including the ones in the textbooks i got from my mother. Very creative writers. |

yemolz:you got it all wrong bro. Tattoos has been part of our culture since ages, the awos(whom you call herbalists)stand for African traditional religion, which is our natural religion before the colonial masters impose theirs on us. The few problems I have with the Yoruba movies are.. 1)odunlade adekola and temitope osoba always spilling out curses as if they've got a reward for it. 2)some actors/actresses(lateef adedimeji, ireti osayemi, temitope osoba and some few others) always speaking English in a Yoruba movie 3)portraying African voodoo as the most powerful thing in the universe in a very unrealistic way(you'd see one go to a babalawo to collect a command charm. Then he will start using it in an unrealistic way) 4)portraying African traditional religion(our original religion)as evil and their Christian/islam counterparts as the proper religion. 5)gatemen with dumb, irritating behaviors 6)most odunlade adekola's flick are totally unrealistic. 7)the subtitles;they should pay more attention to this. |

The OP was off on the issue of names...the movies are supposed to be reflections of the society. I know you must have heard "Sule ma leleyi". A statement used for slow child. Yet there are many wonderful people bearing SULEIMAN. So you prefer them using only Yoruba names? The real issue is their story writing and all of them trying to speak English and sound British in Yoruba movies. I remember watching one and the girl was saying "why did you cheat me". She said it twice to her unfaithful husband, in a fake British accent I stopped watching as I always felt I wasted 2 hours of my life after watching. The only time I sit to watch it with my people is if it is commedy...since they are playing stupid anyways. |

Who is this crybaby? Abeg, go and sleep. Social media has given too many irrelevant folks a voice nowadays. If you want to criticize movies join the official bodies assigned with the responsibility. |

| Re: Yoruba Movie Industry Is Getting It Wrong by Xisnin(m): 11:48am On Jun 24, 2019 |
asuustrike1:Why not those names? Do you even watch Yoruba movies? The most common names in Yoruba movies are Yoruba names, the OP has no problem with that. You are attempting to read the author's mind by stating what is not in the original article. Let us even assume that you are a mind reader. Why should movie directors be restricted on the names they can use? If you and the OP are not happy, maybe you should tell your senators to ban the parents from using such names. When a name disappears from use, you won't find them in movies again. |

kakaG:Don't ignore the question. Why should Yoruba movies promote Christianity and Islam? Do Arab or European movies promote Yoruba religion? So, why do we promote their religions? |
| Re: Yoruba Movie Industry Is Getting It Wrong by Nobody: 1:46pm On Jun 24, 2019 |
Xisnin:Probably you don't get it do you? The continuous usage of a particular name doesn't portray the reality on ground. Same way the English movies portray names like Akpan and Musa as houseboy and gateman respectively similar way Yoruba movies do to the aforementioned names. The character isn't the issue but the continuous usage of those names |
