Gerrard59: I beg to disagree, slavery of blacks in America lasted for over 200 years. I used to say the same thing you said until I did exhaustive research on black American slavery, and I can tell you that no set of people have suffered worse things than they suffered. The Asians never suffered such not even the Jewish suffering during Holocaust comes close. What did not suffer; Only one sets of rags for an entire year called clothes The children were not given clothes till adulthood except rags for covering No shoes, they walked barefoot even during winter They work in the plantation from 5am till late night, no rest The food they were worse than animals food When the British abolished shipping of slaves from Africa They were now being bred like animals, where one man is locked up with plenty women to impregnate them. there was no family unit a mother, child or father can be soled off any time because they were possession that counted for nothing Very many atrocities were committed on this people, it will be too long to list them all out And it has affected subsequent generations It is even we African countries you should be comparing to the Asian countries that we gained independence same period but are well advanced than Africa. We never suffered anything, we were allowed free reign to rule ourselves but nothing to write home about. A very shameful set of people. Black Americans are even better off, at least they are forever Americans. But our own people run away from Africa to experience a bit of progress. 2 Likes |

djon78: I apologise for my numerical mistake. However, good things as well as bad things (slavery was bad and despicable) happen of which one cannot continue to blame the bad things for everything. I don't ascribe to that notion. Regarding the bold, it's something I've done over the years offline and online (including here NL). However, some folks still find a way to blame Caucasians and everyone else. Question is: for how long? 1 Like |

AgentOfAllah: I do understand the concept of slavery, so your elucidation, while lucid isn't new. At the bold, no. It's not appropriate as they were not responsible for their parents' actions. Moreover, policies upon policies have been enacted to "help" blacks. With so much racial intermixture that has occurred over centuries, will those who dole out the potential reparations demand certificates of racial purity? It's befuddling to say the least. Yet again, in paying reparations is that: a small percentage of blacks were free before slavery ended, having bought their freedom or having had it bequeathed to them by sympathetic slave owners. Are their descendants eligible for reparations? Reparations are not only unnecessary as a financial compensation, but they would also be an insult to the throngs of successful black Americans who lifted themselves out of poverty before and after the civil rights movement. Furthermore, the level of education amongst blacks rose while that of poverty fell between 1940 & 1960 before the introduction of welfare and "progressive politics". No way are millions of white, Asian, and Hispanic Americans going to pay reparations for something that happened before their ancestors ever set foot on American Soil. On the flip side...why does your analogy has the name "Uncle Tom"? Oh I get! That's the tag persons like me get. 2 Likes |

Gerrard59: Comparing coloniasm is to institutionalised slavery and racism is an insult to the victims of the later.... Black Americans have come a long way and I make bold to say whatever foreign minorities enjoy today in America is the hard work and sacrifice African Americans made to bring about equity and equality to all irrespective of colour or race.... Yet some foreign ignoramus who never suffered, yet couldn't bring about development or prosperity to their own land, think they have an opinion.... Yeye they smell.... 1 Like |

Gerrard59: I've read every single word of this on conservative/right wing propagandist websites. Welfare has nothing to do with the poverty/social dysfunction/crime/incarceration rate of African-Americans. For one, the US has by far the least generous social safety net/social welfare programs in the industrialised West. Black Americans are not the only people in the world or America who receive welfare. Go to Scandinavia or Finland or even America's Canadian neighbors to see what welfare is. Secondly, black people in bastions of US conservative politics like Mississippi, Alabama, Louisiana etc are no better off than their blue state counterparts. Cutting social benefit programs does not magically eradicate any problems in black society. And that guy's blog is a mountain of suppositions and speculations and no hard numbers. Nobody is denying the Trans-saharan slave trade. The transatlantic trade was bigger. 4 Likes |

Gerrard59:Oh, I'm hurt...I literally thought up the whole thing on the go, and now you're telling my original fictional history in a vacuum isn't new? At the bold, no. It's not appropriate as they were not responsible for their parents' actions. Moreover, policies upon policies have been enacted to "help" blacks.I guess our world views are fundamentally different then. My view is that a thief or his/her descendants don't have any right over what was stolen. I know right? Radical idea! Reparations are not only unnecessary as a financial compensation, but they would also be an insult to the throngs of successful black Americans who lifted themselves out of poverty before and after the civil rights movement.Your argument in a nutshell: Implementing the right thing will be so difficult; hence don't do the right thing... Okay, my nutshell, admittedly..but still, that's cold bruv! Also, I don't know the "throngs" of successful black Americans you're referring to. I love statistics, do give me a statistical account of the proportion of black Americans that have lifted themselves out of poverty relative to the total number. In non-fictional statistics, arguments are usually reliant on the norm not the outliers. Now you're arguing against your own fabrications because I've not mentioned welfare anywhere. Let me help you: Believing that the American society owes a debt to black Americans (not black immigrants to be clear), doesn't mean believing that welfarism is the best way or only way this debt can be paid. On the flip side...why does your analogy has the name "Uncle Tom"? Oh I get! That's the tag persons like me get. There's no flip side here. You already have a fine alphanumeric tag, but if you wanna be Uncle Tom, who am I to infringe on your legitimate fantasies? |

stdammis: Me ke? Abeg don't implicate me o. America doesn't owe me sh!t. I'm not black American, black immigrant, or in any way or form affiliated with America. If a Nigerian immigrant goes to America to feel entitled, that person should be chased back to Naija with correct oak tree pankere!!! I'm no more entitled to the fruits of the stolen labours of black slaves than your average white American. Only difference is, I haven't benefitted from the labour of black slaves, whereas your average white American has. You know who is entitled to the fruits of the labour of black slaves? Their descendants! So you're dang right that it is an entitlement, I'm just waiting for you to actually present a coherent argument as to why they shouldn't be entitled. 1 Like |

Ogurube:I agree with all your points except the one in bold. many Nigerians who have solutions to the country's problems really express concerns about them but the same reason they left the country is the reason they can't contribute to the nation's development, which is the nature of the polity. Nigeria is not a normal country. This country was never established to serve citizens interest. The whites knew that creating a massive state by bringing people who have deeply-divided value systems together would create disagreement, breed mutual suspicion and hatred along ethnic divides, making mass protest and nation wide anti government movement impossible. By creating this sort of lock jam in the polity, an anti people and corrupt political class is empowered to serve there own as well as neo colonial interest. No accomplished Nigerian from abroad can serve in a government headed by a waec failure. heck! they don't even need your ideas cos they are not there for the people. Corruption is not Nigeria's fundamental problem, it is the political system constructed in such a way that there will never be political will for development. Believe it or not, the only way to restore sanity, discipline, patriotism and normal political process is for us to SEPARATE. 1 Like |

Obi1kenobi: Unfortunately, at the moment, I don't have access to the numbers but most black children were raised in two-parent families prior to the 1960s. But today the great majority of black children are raised in one-parent families. Such trends are not unique to blacks, nor even to the United States. The welfare state has led to remarkably similar trends among the white underclass in England over the same period. Just read "Life at the Bottom," by Theodore Dalrymple, a British physician who worked in a hospital in a white slum neighborhood. You cannot take any people, of any color, and exempt them from the requirements of civilization — including work, behavioral standards, personal responsibility and all the other basic things that the clever intelligentsia disdain — without ruinous consequences to them and to society at large. Non-judgmental subsidies of counterproductive lifestyles are treating people as if they were livestock, to be fed and tended by others in a welfare state — and yet expecting them to develop as human beings have developed when facing the challenges of life themselves. At your last statement, the book by the author proves it's a lie. Worse still, the Trans-Saharan slave trade continues till date. 1 Like |
