Thank you and thanks to everyone who gave an advice. You talked about where I want to be in the next five years. Could you please expatiate?
I already made a wrong choice 7 months ago (4 weeks after my NYSC) when I chose a sales job paying relatively high at the expense of knowledge (I didn't seek advice).
I regret that choice because it mentally and physically drained me but I feel the circumstances may be different in that NNPC offers a good opportunity for growth and development aside from the juicy benefits.

I'd appreciate if you can help me clearly define the choices and the impacts it might have based on your own experiences.

Thank you.
Truth is, as much having a masters gives you a miniscule advantage over non-masters holder, based on my recruiting experience, what recruiters really look out for is your work experience and what you can bring to the table. If we restrict it to just GT roles with no much experience, I can beat my chest that a GT with just B.Sc or B.Tech. but with impressive past projects under his belt will most certainly be favoured over a Masters holder with little or no project. In fact, in most roles, professional certification takes precedence over masters.

Why You may ask? It is because M.Sc. is generally academic, while professional certifications have been designed to address skill gaps in specific career paths.

Good morning everyone. Please, I need your advice on this.

Which one would you pick:
1. Masters Degree in Canada (Not Scholarship)
2. NNPC Graduate Trainee (If successful)

Your advice and reasons will be highly appreciated.

In 2019, you can get a funded MSc with the right information and patience.

If I were in your shoes, after resuming for NNPC (based on your assumption), I will wait for a year or two, then discuss with my line manager about taking a study leave. Then I will go to Canada for my MSc.

You made the decision a bit easier by saying your masters is unfunded. Trust me, you do not want to go for an unfunded masters 90% of the time.

Now considering that, the next thing you need to do is evaluate the risks involved. Perform a risk-benefit analysis. I do that everytime, it's the most logical and profitable way to go about things. i even did it with the false allegations made here against me when i was thinking of leaving the thread. Now think like this

What do i stand to lose/gain if i go for an unfunded masters while forfeiting an NNPC offer :
Pros : Potential to earn more after completion, once in a lifetime opportunity if the school is MIT-Caltech-Stanford-ETH-UCB etc, Being more competitive after school due to added knowledge

Cons: Cost of study, Possible debt, Opportunity cost due to wasted experience that could have been gotten at NNPC, missing hands on experience, missing networking opportunities, missing an early start to climb the corporate ladder if you are not keen on academics, missing career advancement opportunities offered by big companies like NNPC/Shell/Exxon etc which may rival or even better the current masters opportunity: MBA/MS-Executive programs -Certifications, Getting a competitive edge in workforce.

You have other personal pros and cons, adding everything up and weighing the pros and cons, map out a cost/benefit graph and decide without bias. It almost always works out better for you in the end

Best of Luck!

Would connect later with you as promised when this is all done.
Intelligence does not hide, whether haters like it or not. Well articulated, In fact I don't really care if you are also behind Jarus' moniker now.

Truly, truly if NNPC does not employ you, their LOSS big time

I think I will just have to comment...
Man you are UNSCRUPULOUSLY METICULOUS. You have already made your point even by your first post. Digging deep just shows it is been done out of hate and not of a heart that likes to research as you earlier claimed. You can't throw away the baby with the bad water. Mosgoon might have his own flaws of self aggrandizement and all that but tell me a man that is perfect. You cannot deny the fact that he has been useful in many ways even more than you. For example, just go through this thread if you can and evaluate his response to people, he has been one of the most courteous person on this thread. Even when someone (one of the haters) tried picking quarrel with him, the guy just maturedly let it slide. Not to mention his tips on some issues and the expensive LOMS he gave for free. So, will you now rub this off and just cruxify him for his self ostentation(which could be his foible of which we all have our own foibles that we have to work on) ?
Live and let live.... Nobody holy pass!
Good morning everyone..... Wishing us a promising and rewarding week ahead.
@bolded, you cannot guilt trip me with the above. It does not work on me. Trust me. It’s like you just feel like being silly today. Give me one good reason why I should hate him? Don’t even mention his achievements (though impr shive) because some of us have done and acquired more but just decided to keep a low profile because it would be silly and mischievous to shower self with praise. The only time I created a thread about an ‘achievement’ was when I needed the public’s opinion. I didn’t go about creating alternate monikers to brag about self. It is just silly.

People that know me know that I will never sit back and allow someone fool the public. Not even in real life. What’s worse is that instead of the dude apologising, he kept defending his lies over and over again. Very appalling.

If you do not like my comments, slide away. You will continue to see my comment on this issue until that dude stops defending his lies. Even if Seun blocks my moniker here, I will create another moniker and keep fighting his lies until he either retires or speak the truth.

Thanks a lot for your contributions @ tejiri4, ginalex, johnpotter660, benflash and big Jarus. I appreciate it. Lol "what if they throw her in sales or marketing", I thought so to.

One other thing, she's not going for audit but tax. You think such skills will help in other industries in the future?

Please what are the specialized departments that one can even work in a bank apart from sales, operations, customer service. Asking for myself.

Modified.
I'm a tax professional myself. It has its merits and demerits.

Main pros:

1. As it is a very specialised branch of Accounting/Law, it will be less competitive when he wants to move from practice (Big 4) to the industry (company). He does not have to compete with other accountants. What this means is, you beat the competition from other accountants (mainly auditors) when a tax opening is advertised. There are a lot of accountants and any opening for accounting/finance position is usually very competitive.

2. Also, more and more companies are becoming tax conscious, and setting up tax department, which means the demand for tax professionals will continue to rise.

3. Somehow, it also has job security when you move to industry. Because it is a very specialized field, they cannot just move just any other accountant there unlike other units within Finance department. If the department is lean (i.e just 1 or 2, or max 3 people in tax department, depending on size of company), tax department is almost immune from layoff.

Main cons:

1. It is too restrictive, unlike other aspects of accounting. You can hardly apply for any role outside tax (eg Finance Manager) and be considered. They will tell you are too specialised. Audit guys have better advantage here.

2. With few exceptions, you are least likely to be promoted Finance Manager or CFO among the other accountants within a company because you are too specialized. An exception is a PwC Tax Partner that was recently made CFO of Forte Oil.

Get work (NNPC) experience before going for masters. But masters is now very important, especially for those eyeing international job market.

Most international jobs (OPEC, World Bank, AfDB, OFID, IMF etc) these days require minimum of Masters for experienced hires. .
