In 1946, Nnamdi Azikiwe was inducted into the prestigious Agbalanze society of Onitsha as Nnayelugo (It was a customary recognition for Onitsha men of significant accomplishment).

Arguably one of his biggest achievement, was when he was appointed to the privy council of the United Kingdom by Queen Elizabeth II in 1960.

And two years later, he became a second-rank red cap chieftain or Ndichie Okwa as the Oziziani Obi in 1962.

He would also be installed as the Owelle-Osowa-Anya of Onitsha, making him a first-rank, hereditary red cap nobleman or Ndichie Ume in 1972.

At the age of seventy-six, in the year 1980 to be precise, Nnamdi Azikiwe was conferred with the highest national honour of Grand Commander of the Federal Republic (GCFR).

However, in the kingdom of academics where his position was incontestable, the Zik of Africa as he is fondly called, received fourteen honorary degrees from Nigerian, American and Liberian universities.

We already have University of Ibadan in the western region although a British establishment, and the federal government established UNN in the eastern region due to the lobbying attitude of Azikiwe. Azikiwe never built UNN with eastern region fund it was a federal government establishment!

For the Africa continental bank, it was one of the three indigenous banks at that time! It was not even initially established by Azikwe but Ebuka Ezeh and the bank was initially named “Tinubu Bank” , the eastern region took over it later after the establishment , and its not even the first indigenous bank, it was just the indigenous bank that survived the collapse of the banks pre 1946.

I read a journal about when Awolowo establish free education, he spent almost 55% of the western union budget on the free education and even the Agbekoya (farmers) at that time revolted against him but he was able to hold his ground because of the vision he had.

Imagine carrying out all this feat with just cocoa money while Azikwe and the Easter region premier also had their own feat in their region with the economy of the eastern region then.

When I look back at those guys (Azikwe and Awolowo), I was astonished and I envy their brain and vision for this country. When I read the letter of Awolowo to Ironsi from prison, I shed tears when he talked about Nigeria losing brains for every minute more he spent in prison, he was so sure about his ability to deliver and I wondered why we haven’t produced great mind like these men.

The genesis of Nigeria problem is when the military took over from the western trained intellectuals coz the military have no business ruling a country. At that stage, Nigeria started diminishing in worth coupled with the civil war we fought that divided us more.

I’m looking forward to the day the Yorubas and Igbos will get over this rubbish ego of ours and finally work together to salvage this country. 9 in 10 people making wave in Nigeria and abroad are Yorubas and Igbos. That’s a fact!
