I'm pretty sure you'll want to believe me that I know the heck top 5 that I mentioned. Or is it you that mentioned it? Well, you've done well with your advice. Just that some people told me otherwise also.

P.S: in the schools you mentioned, are what I mean getting a PhD in Chemical Engineering (fully funded assistantship).

Whoever tells you to turn down a fully funded PhD offer from say Stanford University in lieu of NNPC GT offer needs to explain his reason. There's actually no reason I can think of. I suspect the person thinks the only opportunity that would be available to you after the PhD is a lecturing position but on the contrary several companies are after well grounded graduates of these schools. Think of the research internships in various companies you'll be exposed to while undergoing this degree.

There are great jobs that await you after this degree that would pay you as much as $150k(approx 54m) per annum as a start so even after you factor in cost of living and tax, NNPC's offer is still a long way from there, you can't get this salary even after 5 years in NNPC as long as you don't rest on your oars while studying.

Then there's also the added perk of venture capitalist willing to partner with you in any startup idea you think of. Just because you have these schools in your profile. We are talking of millions of dollars in investment funds here.

you can proceed on an education leave after you've been confirmed. it's no fast rule, similarly, as far as i know, you'll only be entitled to an official leave, after your confirmation.

You wouldn't feel the urge ro proceed on official leave, it's a Govt. work, less stress et al.

A fully funded PhD in any ivy league institution beats whatever NNPC offers.. IMHO, even a fully funded masters beats whatever NNPC offers...

I would still take this over NNPC offer especially if the school is giving the scholarship and not Nigerian government.

Lool if they can pay the money in full at the start no problem. But if they want to be paying in bits, I would likely ditch it and go for NNPC. Those NNDC scholars that were stranded in Europe some years back after the Nigerian government discontinued their payments come to mind.

I have several examples/friends who did otherwise from your advice and are far better off than their counterparts aligned with your advice and the other way round. Be open-minded. Well if it is a UK school, I won't be quick to conclude, even for a top UK school because you have to pack your load immediately you graduate except on extremely rare occasions where you get a job before you graduate or if you are a citizen of UK by birth or something.

But there is still a workaround for UK. I know people that after going for masters in UK saved up from their scholarship funds and used it to port to Australia, one even ported to Canada and they are both doing well. If this is your ultimate plan NNPC should be able to give you the same thing with much comfort because you can do your Nigerian masters while gaining NNPC experience and have enough money to port to good countries. Though you have to hope that Canada doesn't stop their permanent residency plan by the time you decide it is time to leave.

If you are a patient and business minded person NNPC is a great option becuase you can be nuturing your side business with support from your upfront and salary. Something you cannot readily do in these top countries. Lots of them are against owning businesses while on student Visa.

Thanks for the insight bruv...

but someone that will be willing to pursue Nigerian masters has to wait to see where nnpc will post him to so he can apply for masters degree in a neighbouring school (close to his place of work)...

I have full sponsorship from PTDF for a 2 year masters program, I wonder if nnpc would let me conclude if I start the course before the list is released? Any input will be appreciated please I’m in a conundrum regarding the next step.

Lol why should this be a tough decision to make. Like do you know what a top 5 US institution is: MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Caltech, UC Berkeley etc. FFS this is a no brainer. I know someone that turned down shell offer some years back and went for masters in one of these schools, he is a big boy in the US now. Heck I might even turn down NNPC for masters in a top 20 US school with full funding especially when it is a STEM course or even Economics.

Oga, don't try it. If God gives you this job, don't dump it for any masters. Just a friendly advice.

I think it has to do with your personal choice. I know someone who is in his third year of PhD in the U.K under PTDF scholarship and he attended this interview for EH hire. I even know another person who is on his way to start PhD by October under same scholarship and waiting on NNPC GT list to decide. So it a personal decision I guess, some people prioritize getting secured jobs over PG scholarship and you can't blame them given how difficult it is to get good secured jobs this days while others desire getting PhD at young age believing that better opportunity would come ahead. As for me, if I were you, I wouldn't think twice if NNPC calls me. You can always do your master's and PhD at any time and if you desire to lecture you can go class at a later stage in your career. It just my two cent though.

I have some people in my company that earn as much as 15m per annum, relatively secure job if you think of it. And they keep telling me that their major regret is not leaving for masters abroad when their peers were leaving. They have worked upwards of 10 years. They say it is because they can't boast of a quarter of the things those peers have archived by now, financially. Plus the future of their children. They never expected that things would get so bad in this country. They keep advising me that if I have any scholarship opportunity for masters abroad I should leave before age passes me by that there's no much future for we the young ones in the company. Some even have side businesses that give them additional income so don't think they are mediocres.

Egbon, xfire biko nu come and help this guy out. That has been my long innate question but finally someone has asked.

Also, would you go for NNPC job over a fully funded PhD in a U.S top 5 institution?

Oga Jarus you're a treasure trough and your contributions are quite a bliss.

Local men and women, pls anyone who has accurate knowledge regarding this request should help me and this guy, and of course other silent ones who may seek such quest tacitly.

I would choose fully funded PhD in a top 5 US school over NNPC.

It opens better opportunities. PhD in a top school is highly coveted in the international job market. My friend that did his PhD, also fully funded, in a Top 20 US school got Shell US job almost immediately after finishing.

Thank God Oga Jarus has confirmed it. PhD or even MS in a top US school opens doors for people. Similarly a guy that studied Chem Eng in my school went for masters in a not highly ranked US school, funded by his pops though and now works as a Data Scientist in Shell USA. Another one now works in Google as a Network Engineer(in fact he struggled to make 2-1).

As for UK you need to think about it well. If it is a top school and in STEM I might take the risk and find a work around before the end of my masters. But it is a very tricky situation so the decision is up to you.

You do have a point and that is why I said it a personal thing. I know if you have the opportunity to study in a good university abroad and you are good, definitely opportunities would come your way after your studies, but at the same time, if you decide to stick with NNPC as against any foreign scholarship, it all fine too because am sure after 3 years or so, you can always go back to school for masters or PhD which I don't think would be too late. I know someone who turned down fully sponsored Australian government PhD scholarship for DPR last year. I believe he can get another scholarship when ever he decides to back to school. So for me it a personal choice, but please note if you get PTDF scholarship to U.K except may be Germany and NNPC gives you an offer, I will advice you stick with NNPC. My two cent though.
