1) Do i need block account to apply for student visa? If so, how much do I need to put in the block account?
2) Do I need account statement from sponsor again after putting money in block account?
At least, how much must be in my sponsor account statement?

Hey guys! Barka de Sallah to those celebrating!

Newbie here, don’t worry, I’ve read the entire thread, so rest assured I won’t ask questions that have been asked on here ad nauseam.

I applied for a study visa to Belgium on 19/07/2019. My documents were received at the Embassy in Abuja on 22/07/19. The end of this week will mark a month since I applied, and haven’t been called for an interview/heard back. I’m aware this is typical for Belgium, so it’s not surprising to me.

I did, however, have my school contact the embassy on my behalf to find out the progress (if any) on my application. The response was a generic one (as expected), but they gave a 5-digit reference file number (this isn’t the same as the VFS reference number for tracking one’s application).

I saw some users mention a 5-digit “visa number” some pages ago on this thread, and contacting the Home Office in Brussels to find out more on their application status.

This brings me to my question — even though I’m yet to be invited for an interview (and my documents are most likely still in Nigeria), can I still call up the Home Office in Brussels to ask for a status update on my application using the file reference number the embassy gave in their response to the email my school sent them?

Lastly, could a non-legalized police character report be grounds for a rejection? That is the only dent in my application. I only certified it at a Notary Public. I met all other requirements to the last letter. I don’t have any red flags I’m aware of, have a decent (at least, I think?) travel history to several countries including the US, UK, Dubai, Russia (where I studied for my undergrad), Mongolia, and have a Schengen Visa to Finland (although I didn’t travel eventually — travel date coincided with my US visa interview).

I received a “Proof of Solvency” certificate from my school after I deposited a set amount into an escrow account in Belgium. All foreign documents (mostly my medical degree and transcripts were all legalized by the official authorities in Russia and duly translated to English with notarization). Medical report from Kamorass is a clean bill of health (I know we’re not supposed to see it — the doctor sent me a scanned copy before it was sealed). Of course I included my Letter of Acceptance from my school. I guess that’s it?

Thanks! Hope to hear from you guys!

send an email to vfs and the embassy to inquire why you have not been called up for the interview.

Hey! Thanks for the reply! Just got the interview invite 2 days ago for next week.

Could anyone kindly enlighten me on what type of questions to expect during the interview? Would greatly appreciate it!

You going for masters I suppose...
Just questions about your undergraduate, your finance and the school and the country you intending to go.. it’s just some written exam, only undergraduate goes through written and oral.. if this hasn’t changed then it should be like that..

If it has... anyone with recent info could help out...
On your police character report any official document that’s not legalised by Belgium embassy MAY NOT be accepted, you may be asked to present a new one... Just pray that’s what they ask. If all others are intact, worry-less. Which school are you going in Belgium?

Hey! Thanks for your reply. A few more questions (if you don’t mind):—

• any additional documents we should bring along with us to the interview?

• after the interview, when can one expect to hear back concerning the final decision, and

• in your experience, what mistakes (during the interview) usually lead to a rejection given all other conditions are met?

About the Police Character Report, well, I really hope it won’t be the nail in the coffin to my application.

Thanks!

• nothing is needed actually, apart from the proof that you have appointment and interview that day... but in case go along with all your document, you never can tell...

Fingers crossed on the police thingy... good luck bro

•since you waited sometime already it should be fast 2 weeks or 1 month at max... since your school resumes in September... I assume

• incoherent answers can be a problem.. they will ask you same question but in different ways... if you understand wat I mean.. so just remember not to give two different answers to one question... same answer but different ways of asking

You can get the courses in other universities if they have it... KU leuven, VUb, Antwerp.. just search for cities... for example... Brussels... Antwerp.. Gent.... leuven...Hasselt...

If you choose not to apply for masters, you will have more questions to answer and then your age comes into play and what you have been doing before now, this will lead to your motivation for nursing and bachelors are almost in Nederlands.. so it’s might be a bit tedious .. but in all it’s not unachievable.. you apply to the school and afterwards apply for the language..

Age Limit? I don’t think so.. but you need to explain Gaps in your education if there is one..

My advice..
Apply for master program and get your admission focus on that for start and you can change later. By then there will be less hassle and more motivation..

Guys, are there any rules regarding what personal effects we can/cannot bring into the embassy? I know some embassies have a no-phone/electronics/gadgets policy. Also, regarding the written interview, are there word/character limits to the answers?

Urgent reply will be appreciated. Interview is tomorrow.

Thank you!

Hey guys!

I just finished from my interview at the Embassy of Belgium, and I’m very delighted to inform you that it was successful! My visa was granted and I’ll be getting my passport back next week.

Although my time here has been very short, in the spirit of community and collegiality, I’d like to give back to this forum, and hope that others who will walk this line (and be successful) after us, will be inspired to give back as well.

My appointment was slated for 1 PM today (21/08/2019). I arrived Lagos by flight at about 8:20 AM, was met by my aunt, and we drove straight to the embassy. We arrived a little short of 10 AM. It’s important to have the email inviting you for the interview printed out, because that’s literally your ticket to enter the embassy premises. I didn’t have mine, but there’s a place about 50m from the embassy where it can be done for 300 Naira apiece.

There were 3 other students for the interview today. By the time we had finished the written component of the interview, more students had come. We all had different time slots, with mine being the latest, but the embassy officials weren’t strict on the time. So, I think it’s safe to say that you can come at any time regardless of your allotted time. The interview itself is both WRITTEN and ORAL.

The written component is just a questionnaire with several questions. You’re given an hour to answer it in its entirety. They stick to the time and won’t give you any second extra to finish. Before you start answering, you’d be advised to sign at the very last page of the questionnaire. Please, do that. It doesn’t take more than 5 seconds. Remember, when the time is up, you’re not given any extra time to finish. The least you can do is adhere to their instructions/suggestions. The questions, as have already been cited here before, mostly pertain to your previous education, how it correlates with what you wish to study in Belgium, the benefits you hope to gain from the study program, etc.

If you don’t finish answering the questionnaire in the allotted time, don’t fret. I didn’t finish either. They don’t read it. You’ll still be called in for the oral interview. My interview experience was very laid back and informal. The official started by scaring me with “you failed!” because I made an error literally on the first question, which is your last name and first name! Who makes an error writing their name?! Apparently just me, lol! Anyways, I digress. That was the icebreaker and the interview was very fluid from there on. He didn’t ask me much from the questionnaire. He was mostly fascinated by the fact that I’m fluent in Russian (I studied in Russia for my undergrad) and a bit of French (which is one of the 3 official languages in Belgium). He looked through my passport and asked about my trips to the other countries I’ve been to. It helps to have a decent travel history.

The conversation soon turned to me asking the questions. This is a great interview skill that I also used during my US visa interview. In as much as it is a formal setting, people generally are more open and receptive when you show an interest in their lives. So, I asked if he’d like to see me write his name in Russian when he asked if I also know how to write in Cyrillic (the Russian cursive basically), which I do. I asked how long he’s lived in Nigeria, if he’s been to Abia State (where I attended high school), and many other lighthearted questions. At this point, he had already announced that he was impressed and my visa was granted even with my unforgivable gaffe with my name. So, we were basically just making small talk.

He ended by wishing me well in my studies in Belgium and encouraged me to reach out to them whenever I return to Nigeria. They have an active alumni club. You’ll also see information on that by the gate. The other students that interviewed today also had positive outcomes. Overall, it was a pleasant surprise/experience today! I didn’t expect that I’ll be receiving my passport next week, so that definitely is the cherry on top!

I’m going to book my flight ticket now. My timeline is as follows:

• Applied to the University of Antwerp in February 2019,
• Had a Skype interview in mid-March 2019,
• Received news of admission in early April 2019,
• Sent legalized diploma and transcripts in late May 2019,
• Received official Letter of Acceptance in mid-June (19/06/19),
• Applied for a study visa in mid-July (19/07/19),
• Received an interview invite in mid-August (13/08/19),
• Interviewed today (21/08/2019) with visa approval,
• Prospective date of passport collection will be the end of next week from VFS Lagos.

Good luck guys! See you on the other side!

Oh, I forgot to add this: even though I didn’t legalize my Police Character Report (I only certified it at a Notary Public), it didn’t negatively impact my application as I thought it would. I doubt the visa officer even noticed this! I do realize I was extremely lucky and I took a big risk.

However, to future applicants, I don’t advise doing this! Ensure that you meet all the Embassy requirements before submitting your application.

Good morning fellas!

Is it possible to travel via AMS (Amsterdam) on a Belgian visa? Belgium is the main destination. Flying to AMS is a bit cheaper than to BRU.

Thanks!
