Thanks to you. I really love this. Though I am a direct entry aspirant for Med/surg but after this I guess I will include Dentistry.



A billion likes for whoever constructed this. This was what changed my view about dentistry. Wow! I felt I would be such an ingrate not to commend the post that has made me fall in love with dentistry.
After reading this, I went online and I've read at least 100 articles relating to this noble profession.


I picked it in JAMB last year haven't been admitted yet. My JAMB CAPS status still says "Admission in Progress, Check back later".

Though I'm not in the profession but medical science always gives me goosebumps with the way they help people and the respect the profession carries. If not for the unseriousness and mistakes i made in my secondary school, I would have been studying a medical course today... Medical science have always been my first love and will always be... The small physiological psychology i did while studying psychology was just giving me joy making me feel like I've studied medicine lol... Wish I could get a second chance.... Consider yourself in a great position if you're a medical student or a doctor already... Because you're where i dream to be and you have achieved a lot of people's dream.... I swear all my children must be medical professionals

Let's water this place a bit.. its getting dry

I don't know if someone has already written on this (couldn't read through all the comments for time's sake). I'll give an overview of the specialties and their job prescriptions..
There are about ten specialties in Dental surgery as practiced in Nigeria.

For the mention, to start any of the Postgraduate training in any of the specialties, one has to pass the Primaries of either the West African College of Surgeons (FWACS) or the National Postgraduate Medical College, written after graduation from undergraduate training.They are Postgraduate centers for the training of Physicians and Surgeons of all specialties of Medicine and Dental surgery.

The Dental surgery specialties are as follows:

1. Oral and Maxillofacial surgery: These surgeons are concerned with surgical excisions of tumors in the mouth, jaws and face, and also the surgical reconstruction of the defects created afterwards. They are also concerned with repair of congenital defects (e.g cleft lip and palate, bifid tongue, and numerous syndromic defects). They are also concerned with orthopedic surgeries of the maxillofacial region following accidents which results in fracture of the jaws or facial bones. TMJ disorders or dislocations etc etc

2. Oral and maxillofacial pathology: These are Dental surgeons and Pathologists who study in microscopic Details the diseases of the oral and maxillofacial region and aid in diagnosis. Such as tumors and numerous lesions (e.g ameloblastoma, fibrous dysplasia, pleomorphic adenoma and numerous other odontogenic, salivary gland diseases, fibro-osseous lesions etc) and their histology.

3. Oral Medicine: These are Dental surgeons and Physicians who study and treat numerous oral mucosal diseases (white and red lesions like leukoplakia, erythroplakia etc), burning mouth syndrome, lichen planus etc etc, and also treat oral manifestations of systemic diseases and infections affecting the mouth and the body at large, with medications.

4.Periodontology: Periodontologists study and treat diseases of the periodontium (gum, periodontal ligaments, cementum, alveolar bone) like gingivitis and periodontitis, and also other ulcerative gum diseases (e.g acute necrotizing ulcerative gingivitis, etc). This treatment may be surgical or non surgical. May also involve bone regenerative procedures and plastic surgeries. They also place and maintain dental implants on the jaws (implantology).

5. Orthodontics: Orthodontists are specialists who correct numerous malocclusions or mal-aligned teeth and Jaws using orthodontic appliances (wires, attachments, auxiliaries and other removable orthodontic appliances). They are also called Dentofacial orthopedic dentists.

6. Pediatric dentistry: Paedodontists treat oral and dental diseases in children such as trauma, eruption cysts, and numerous other diseases and carry out endodontic surgical procedures such as pulpectomies, pulpotomies, pulp capping procedures etc

7. Restorative Dentistry: These specialists or endodontists diagnose and treat diseases within the tooth such as reversible or irreversible pulpitis, caries, by fillings or Root Canal Therapy or certain perio-endo procedures.

8. Prosthodontics: Prosthodontists replace missing tooth or teeth, or maxillofacial structures by diagnosing and studying various edentulous ridges and its classifications, and fabricating dentures or other prosthesis (e.g jaws).

9. Community dentistry: These doctors focus on prevention of orodental and maxillofacial diseases.

10. Oral and Maxillofacial radiology: These are dentists who take radiographs of the maxillofacial region (e.g cephalograms, orthopantomograms, apical radiographs etc) and also study it and make diagnosis.

Other areas of Dentistry are; Geriatric dentistry, implantology etc. Not so renowned in Nigeria yet.

NB: During residency, the doctors rotate in all of the specialties of dental surgery, Medicine and Surgery before finally settling for their area after passing part 1 exam of the postgraduate school. These trainings take up to 7 years or more to complete after the housemanship and NYSC.

Dental technology, dental therapy and dental nursing are all paramedicals in the field of dentistry. They are trained in schools of dental technology (not in a University yet). They assist the dental surgeons with laboratory works such as fabrication of prosthesis, denture, orthodontic casts, preventive dental procedures and oral health educations etc. They are not doctors and are not trained in Medicine and Surgery (like the dentists).

Many times people confuse these professionals with dentists. I just thought I should seize this opportunity to shade some light on this here.

What's the essence of doing all other medical courses that they ll not be permitted to practice?


Just to have insight about them or what,?

Dental surgery is a specialty of Medicine. The only difference is that it has carved out its niche and autonomy. It is the only specialty which has a different Faculty from the rest and involves early 'specialization', hence the students would be studying Medicine while specializing at the same time.

And who says you don't practice Medicine as a dentist. The whole body is linked together, for instance, gingival hypertrophy may be a sign of Acute myelogenous leukemia, Addison's disease may manifest as white lesions on the buccal mucosa. Several other systemic diseases have its manifestations in the mouth. Dental surgeons study Oral Medicine and Pathology together with their general Medicine knowledge, they are able to recognize these features and treat the diseases with drugs. Most times, to treat the oral signs would involve treating the systemic diseases which they are also trained to do.

They also perform certain medical procedures like Tracheostomy, blood transfusions, I.v drug deliveries and can also manage emergency cases e.g asthma, epilepsy, shock, etc in the course of managing dental patients.

Dental surgeons as with other medical specialists focus more on their area of expertise but it doesn't mean they cannot treat medical cases when the need arise. Their degree is a culmination of every training they have received (Both in Medicine and Dentistry).

NB: Dentistry used to be a specialty under Surgery (read history of surgeons- barber surgeons). At another time, it was called Stomatology which you do after your first degree in Medicine and surgery. The ancient dental surgeons decided to carve out their own niche and autonomy, it's purely political. But we all reunite with other doctors in Postgraduate (West African College of Surgeons, Medical College of Physicians/surgeons).

Is it too much competition?

This was stipulated by the Medical and Dental council. This is because Dentistry is considered to be a specialty of Medicine and does not require many candidates. This is likened to absorbing very few resident doctors for each specialties to be able to train them adequately due to the few equipments available for the training of doctors in that specialty. And just as I mentioned earlier, dental students are studying Medicine but specializing at the same time.

If you're in first year or yet to take your first professional medical exam (2nd MBBS/BDS part A), Congratulations. But at the same time, I'll encourage you to focus on your studies. Give no room for distractions and do not be carried away by the euphoria of being on the path to becoming a Medical doctor/Dental surgeon. The path is tough and rigorous. There are many mountains to climb. It can be victorious or frustrating for one depending on the decisions you make and grace of God. But no matter the challenges, I advice you never to give up at any stage, remain focused. Know who you are and where you are heading to (A path of greatness).

My story I believe will encourage many here. Very soon I'll share it here. I faced numerous challenges and roadblocks (especially in my Medicine and Surgery- 4th BDS), but I never gave up. I just finished my final exam (5th BDS)... I have been offered a job even before my graduation. No matter how long it takes you, remain resilient.

First professional exam 2nd semester on my mind (PARASITOLOGY IS HECTIC) but God rules I must make it to the college of medicine by OCTOBER amen!!!

For the enlightenment of newly admitted dental surgery students, aspirants and others, here are an overview of courses done from first to sixth year of Medical and dental school.

Many people who are not well informed about dentistry think it is just about the teeth. Some even mistake dentists/dental surgeons for other paramedics or dental auxilliaries (like dental technologists, therapists, dental nurses etc who are trained in schools of dental technology/universities).

Dentistry is unique in that it is the only specialty of Medicine that has carved out its own niche, where candidates study Medicine and surgery and specialize in the orofacial region at the same time, making it hectic and more rigorous. Here are an overview of courses offered.

Emphasis would be more from second to sixth year.

-First year:
This is called Pre-Med, as candidates are yet to begin core medical courses. They do basic biological and Physical sciences (Physics, chemistry, Biology, Zoology etc etc). Same courses as Medicine Students.

This post will be centered on the Medical Courses (second to sixth year).

-Second- Third year:

*2nd BDS part A courses:
Oral biology (Oral Anatomy and Oral Physiology).

*2nd BDS part B/2ndMBBS courses: Anatomy (Gross Anatomy, Embryology, Histology), Physiology, Medical Biochemistry.



By the second year, they write their 2nd BDS part A and by the 3rd year they write the 2nd MBBS exam (also called BDS part B) together with Medicine students.

-4th year courses:
*3rd BDS part A/3rd MBBS courses:
.Pharmacology and Therapeutics
. Pathology (Medical Microbiology, Chemical pathology, Hematology, Morbid Anatomy).

At the end they write the 3rd BDS part A/3rd MBBS together with the Medicine students.

*3rd BDS part B courses are as follows:
.Operative techniques
. Prosthetic techniques
. Science of Dental Materials

-5th year:
*They start short postings and lectures in the following Medical and surgical specialties:
Dermatology, ENT (Otorhinolaryngology), Ophthalmology, Anesthesiology, Radiology, Psychiatry, Emergency Medicine and Family Medicine.

*After which they proceed with other postings and Lectures in other specialties in internal Medicine and Surgery.

.Internal Medicine: Cardiology, gastroenterology, endocrinology, Neurology, Nephrology, Respiratory Medicine (pulmonology) and Rheumatology.

.Surgery: General surgery, Orthopedic surgery, Neurosurgery, Cardiothoracic surgery, Plastic surgery and Pediatric surgery.

After this they write the 4th BDS (or 5th MB) exam organized by the Faculty of Medical sciences /Medicine.

Those who survive till this stage are then ushered into the final phase of Dental surgery training with another rigorous Academic bombardments in about ten specialties of Dentistry/Dental surgery.

-6th year:
*5th BDS courses are:
.Oral and maxillofacial surgery
. Oral Pathology
.Oral Medicine
.Prosthetic dentistry (Prosthodontics)
.Restorative dentistry
.Pediatric dentistry (pedodontics)
.Orthodontics
.Periodontology
.Community dentistry
.Oral and maxillofacial radiology

After which they write the 5th BDS exam at the end of the session. Can sometimes take up to 7 years.

Tests will be written per semester on various courses before the Main exams at the end of the session.

Those who pass the final BDS exam are then inducted into the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) as Doctors and Dental surgeons together with their Medical colleagues.

NB: different universities may have just a slight modification in there dental surgery program, but huge similarities. That above is for UNN.

This is a very rigorous training that have had a lot of people thrown out of the Medical school. Only very few end up surviving at the end. But, for the determined, it can be done.

For the Dental surgery students, remain focused, avoid distractions (social media, women etc), work hard and smart, pray too. It can be done.

Aspirants, work hard and smart too, never give up until you get the best out of life.
