He nodded in agreement. 'If that's all you want as a good friend, then you can count on me.'

The smile she gave was the brightest he had seen on her, so far.

'Really? Come and give me a hug.' She stood up and spread her hands.

He went to her and they hugged briefly.

'That's good.' She looked contended. 'Now, we're moving on.'

He sat down again. 'Now, let's discuss Janet's matter.'

She nodded. 'Don't worry. I've told you I intend to call her. Let me tell you what I want to say to her. I intend to tell her that I'm sorry for lying to her; that I did so because I felt you should be mine; that indeed we were only friends and nothing serious is between us. I'll tell her to take you back and to forgive me for all I've done.

' I'll also confess that I left my thing behind to fix you, and that you're a good child of God.' She studied his reaction.
'I'll also plead that I hope she will not let what I've done to affect my job. That's what I intend to tell her. What d'you say to it?'

He nodded emphatically. 'What you intend to tell her is all correct. In addition, you should let her know you have seen, pleaded with me and I've forgiven you. I'll also put in words for you in case she's cross with you.'

'Thank you, that's what friends are meant to do.'

'So when will you call her?' He wanted her to swing to action immediately.

'Do I have your words that our good relationship will continue after you're back together?'

He smiled. 'Of course you have my words.'

'Okay. I'll call her right away.' Becky brought out her phone and scrolled through.

After her mother left her room, Janet's mood brightened and she decided to go downstairs for her meal. She would be having a brunch as it was already midday.

She was taking the meal when her phone rang in her room. Unknown to her, Becky was trying to reach out to her. Janet was oblivious of the ringing as the handset was not with her.

She was thinking about the telephone conversation her mum had with Raphael. If indeed Raphael was sincere in all he had been doing, then she had wronged him by believing Becky, and reacting the way she reacted.

But who could blame her? Becky seemed to have a tenable story. Why would she think that Becky was lying against him?

If not what her mother said. Janet would not mind going to his place right away to apologize to him. She felt she had acted quite rashly.

But wait a minute. What if Raphael was just lying his head off even to the supposed person well-known to Becky? He could still have stuck to that story that there was no serious relationship with Becky, couldn't he?

Janet shrugged. Her mother was right in saying that she should not act in a rush; that they should wait and see how things would play out.

'Her phone rang but she didn't pick it' Becky observed the termination of the attempted call.

'Maybe she left it in her room.' Raphael was observing and was forced to say.

'No problem. I'll call her later.'

He nodded. 'That will be fine. I think the earlier you're able to get across to her, the better.'

She placed her phone on the table and stretched her legs.

He studied her.

'Why're you staring at me?' She actually liked it that way but pretended not to do so.

He blinked rapidly and smiled. 'I'm thinking of certain things.'

'What things?'

He hesitated.

'Come on, Raphael, tell me.'

He shrugged. 'It is strange that within such a short time, you and I are back together.'

'Yes, it looks strange. Do you really know why I did what I did?'

'Why?'

'It's because of love.'

'Love? That can't be. Love shouldn't cause such hurt.'

'Love can cause a lot of hurtful feelings.' She tried not to be emotional. 'I wanted you but you ignored me for another lady. I felt rejected. That led to those actions that I took.'

He shook his head. 'Indeed love can be dangerous. On my part, I'm sorry, I thought you understood. What about now? Are those hurtful feelings no longer there? Are we not back to where we were?'

'No, we're not.' She smiled and looked like someone who knew better. 'I will not just sit down like this chatting with you and telling you to go ahead and marry your Janet if I am still having the kind of feelings I had before.'

'What changed your thinking or feelings?'

She sighed. 'Last night, I could hardly sleep. I was terribly disturbed about what had happened. I was restless. I felt very bad about what I did. That was why I just had to call you and come to apologize.'

He nodded without saying a word.

'I really admire your steadfastness.' Becky let the words come out of her freely. 'You really stood your ground. Mind you, don't think I'm a bad girl. Yesterday, that strong feeling just came like that, and I'm sorry about it. I'm glad we've made that a past issue and we're forging on.'

'Thanks for all the complimentary part.' He was modest and cautious. 'As for the steadfastness, the Lord is my strength. I can only do what He enables me to do. Without God, I'm nothing.'

She nodded understandingly. 'I want to ask you a question that is very personal, I hope you don't mind.'

'What question?'

She looked at him and smiled.

'What question?' He was all curious.

She nodded understandingly. 'I want to ask you a question that is very personal, I hope you don't mind.'

'What question?'

She looked at him and smiled.

'What question?' He was all curious.

'In what area is Janet better than me?'

'Oh come on, what kind of question is that?'

'Just answer. As your good friend, I have the right to ask.'

'Of course. I will answer you. I didn't desire relationship with Janet because she's better than you or any other lady.'

She raised her eyebrow. 'So, why did you pick her over me? Is she better looking? Is it because of her background?'

'No, no, no, Becky. You've said something like this before. It has nothing to do with any of those things you said. Let me tell you, I could have told you I wanted you to be my life partner long ago, but I had to wait for God's directives. He was the one that made the choice for me. That, my dear is the truth and nothing but the truth.'

Becky was pensive. She looked at him without saying anything.

'When I first saw Janet as the one, I was reluctant. I was even scared of approaching her and it took some time before I could summon the courage. She too did not say yes, outright. It was only few days ago that she said yes.'

'What about her father's angle? I understand he's threatening to lay you off if you don't stop your affairs with his daughter. How will you handle that?'

Raphael nodded. He had expected her to ask question on that aspect. 'I'm not bothered by any obstacle. I've left everything in the hands of God. I'm not desperate about marrying Janet. If God really says so, then so shall it be. I'm not afraid of being laid off because of her.'

'Hmn, the things love does.' She smiled.

'Sorry, we've been so engrossed in talking I didn't remember to ask you what I can offer you.'

She smiled and waved it off. 'I'm enjoying the conversation with you.'

'And you.' He looked at her critically. 'Tell me about your love life. There must be a serious guy in your life, right?'

'I wouldn't know if the word serious guy is appropriate, but there's a guy.'

'The important thing is to commit everything into the hands of God.' He became prescriptive. 'God is the One that can lead one aright.'

Becky did not really believe in Raphael's postulations about God, but did not say so.

'Maybe you should try Janet's number again' There was expectation in his mien.

Again, she nodded in agreement and tried the number. This time around, she picked it at the third ring.

'Hello, Miss Janet. Good afternoon ma'am. This is Becky on the line.'

Janet listened in rapt attention as Becky confessed all her misdeeds and scheming. She exonerated Raphael and blamed her misplaced love and blind jealousy for all her actions. She pleaded for forgiveness.

Janet felt she had been watching a suspense-filled drama. Things were happening so fast with many intrigues all the way.

'So, you're saying he never did any of those things you said he did?' She had to be sure she was hearing well.

'No, not at all.' Becky's apological words came in a flurry. 'Throughout last night, I couldn't sleep. I was thinking about the whole thing. I felt so bad about it. Please forgive me. I've met with him too and have asked for his forgiveness.'

'So, tell me, in all truthfulness, what is your relationship with him?'

'We're friends.'

'Friends or lovers?'

'Just friends, please.'

Janet paused. 'Alright. Thank you again for coming out clean.' She felt like she was relieved of a big burden.

'But please, next time be careful about what you say concerning people. Allegations like the ones you made can break hearts and spoil a lot of things.'

'Yes. Thank you for the advice.' Becky smiled to herself. 'Such a thing will not happen again, I promise.'

'Okay. Bye bye.'

'Bye, ma'am. Thanks for your understanding.'

'Thank you for clearing me. The Lord be praised. He has indeed taken control.' Raphael was grateful to God for the turn of events. He turned to Becky. 'Thank you, Becky for your change of heart.'

Becky waived it off. 'We're real friends now, remember?'

She came to him and he embraced her briefly.

He sat down again. 'Now that you've told Janet, d'you know she may come here?'

She thought over that for a couple of seconds and nodded. 'That's true. I guess I've stayed enough for today. Let me be going.'

'Becky, I appreciate what you just did. It takes a lot of courage to do that. Thank you.'

She was bemused. 'You're thanking me after all I've done to you? You're so different. Some guys I know will still be mad at me by now.'

'It's okay. Let's forget that ugly episode.'

'Alright, let me be on my way.' She stood up and moved towards the door.

'Just a minute.' He quickly went to the bathroom to bring the nylon containing her thing.

'It's yours.' He grimaced and, handed it to her.

'Oh.' She returned the grimace, collected the nylon and put it in her hand bag. 'I thought you've thrown it away. Sorry for the embarrassment.'

'It's okay. Take care of yourself.' He shrugged it off. 'It's one of those things.'

'Bye bye.' She opened the door and stepped out.

He accompanied her to the gate and waved bye to her. Wow, what an episode! So many things had happened in the last twenty four hours or so. But in all, the glory be to God.

What next? Must he call Janet? He could, but shouldn't she be the one to call him? She was the one who called it quits with him. She was the one who would not listen to his explanations. Well, thank God, all ended well.

He sat down and watched the news on television. He was still watching it when Janet knocked at his door.

He opened the door and ushered her in. They sat next to each other without a word. She handed him a note: Forgive me, please.

He sighed and folded the note.

'I've forgiven you.' He was cool and calm and there was no trace of anger or even annoyance in him.

'Oh my darling.' She moved over to him and clung onto him.

It was the longest hug he ever had without a break.

Twenty minutes later, she was still in his arms. She cried and kissed him. She cried again and he had to urge her to calm down.

While she was still exhibiting so much emotion, an idea struck her mind: God had answered her prayers.

The complaint that her relationship never lasted had been laid to rest. The jinx had been broken. Glory be to God. This realization brought more emotional display.

'It's okay, my dear.' He kissed her forehead.

Later she slept in his arms and he carried her to the bedroom. Like a baby whose sleep must not be disturbed, he gently lay her on the bed.

When he wanted to move away, she still clung on to him. He had no choice than to remain at her side. Soon, he too slept off.

He must have slept for up to an hour. Her hand that rubbed on his chest aroused him. He opened his eyes and turned to her.

'You've woken up?' His question was unnecessary and he knew it. She nodded and smiled at him.

'How're you?' He smiled and looked into her eyes.

'Great' She smiled again and squeezed his right hand. 'I'm so glad we're back together.'

'Me too.'

'Can I ask you a question?' There was curiosity on her face.

He smiled at her. 'You can ask any question, my dear.'

'Did...did you and Becky ever...?'

He didn't wait for her to finish the statement. He put his right palm on her mouth to stop her.

'Never. There was never anything like that. She's just a friend.' He mused. 'I have never raped nor attempted to rape anybody in my life. And for Becky, I won't do it even if she wants it.'

'I believe you.' She smiled innocently.

'Thanks for believing.'

'You're welcome.'

'There's something I should let you know about her.' He sat up on the bed and put the pillow between his back and the wall.

'What's that?'

'She asked that I should be her good friend. That was when she came to apologize. I gave her my words.'

Janet didn't say a thing for few seconds. 'Is she saying you should have an affair with her?'

'No. She wants a friend she can confide in. She thinks I have the quality.'

'She is still hoping to have you.' Janet cast a warning look. 'I know you have the ability to be steadfast, but be careful with her. She's still eyeing you.'

'I will be careful.'

'I can't share you with anyone.' She grinned. 'I don't want to ever share your love with anyone.'

He pinched her softly on the hand. 'There won't ever be anything like that, my dear. I can't do that.'

'I already told dad I've broken up with you.'

'You have?' He raised his eyebrows.

'Yes, in the morning. Mum advises that I should continue to let him have that impression.'

'Your mum knows about what has happened?' He was surprised.

'Yes. I told her everything.'

He sighed.

'She seems to...she seems to think you're a good guy.' She laughed.

'She does?' Again, he was surprised.

'Yes. She's on our side.'

'Glory be to God.'

'But, there's still dad's angle to contend with.' Now, she wore a slight frown.

'Don't worry. God will handle everything.' He patted her to reassure her.

Her phone rang. It was her mum on the line.

'Hello, are you still with him?' Julie's voice showed concern.

'Yes, mum.'

'Can I talk to him?'

'Sure, mum.' She turned to him. 'My mum wants to talk to you.'

'What?' He could not disguise his surprise.

She winked at him and handed her phone over.

'Hello, ma'am. Good day, ma'am.' He bowed slightly as if the woman was right there.

'Hello, Raphael, how d'you do?'

'I'm fine ma'am. I thank God ma'am.'

'I hope you're not toying with the emotions of my daughter.'

'Oh no, ma'am. God forbid, ma'am.'

'If indeed it's God's will that you'll be life partners, leave everything to God. He does things His own way and at His own time.'

You will have to quote the whole update before you say "thank you op", "kudos", "nice story" etc. So those simply commenting didn't read the story abi? Or the story didn't carry enough suspense that you had create your own suspense by quoting the whole thing. Abeg make we dey help ourselves o. It's redundant and boring.
Meanwhile one GBOZA! for the great writer.

'Yes ma'am.'

'Give the phone back to her.'

'Yes, ma'am. Thank you ma'am.' He handed the phone back to Janet. There was something about that voice. It was as if he had spoken with her mother not long ago.

'Hello, mum.' Janet looked happy.

'Don't stay too long over there. Remember you must not arouse the suspicion of your dad that you're still seeing him.'

'Yes, mum.'

His trip to his home town, Idanre in Ondo state was fruitful and eventful. Raphael spent the Christmas and boxing day with his family.

His parents and siblings were glad to have him around. His married brother and his family, his sister and her last born, were all around on Christmas day. It was more like a family re-union.

As the third and the last born, everybody was happy to have the 'baby of the house' around.

On December 30, he came back to his base at Ota. Then, he called his father to intimate him of his safe arrival. Thereafter, he called Janet that he was back. It was just few minutes after noon. Janet said would she soon be with him.

An hour later, after he had showered and changed into corduroy and t-shirt, Janet came around.

They hugged each other as if they had not seen in ages. She brought a small Ghana-must-go bag with her. When she opened it, there were food flasks, a bottle of red wine, a bottle of roasted ground and two designer shirts.

'All for you.' She handed the bag to him.

'Thank you my darling. Thank you so much.' He hugged her in appreciation.

The food flasks contained fried rice, fried chicken and fried turkey. The food was sumptuous. It could feed him for a couple of days.

He too had something for her. He gave her fresh fruits he had brought. There were fresh bananas and pineapples.

She stayed with him for hours, chatting about this and that. He was glad to be back with her, to hold her delicate hands, to look at her petite figure and to look into her pretty eyes.

It was towards evening when she left. He kissed and waved goodbye to her. About an hour after she had gone, Becky too came around.

'Good to see you again.' Becky was in a jolly mood. She moved over to give him a peck.

'Yeah, it's good to be back. I can see that you're looking good. 'Janet left not long ago.'

'I could sense that.' She stared at him. 'Did you miss me?'

He nodded. 'I missed you and everything here.'

'So, what did you bring me for me?'

He gave her some fruits too.

'Thanks.' She put them in nylon.

'You're welcome.'

They sat in the sitting room.

'I have a confession to make.' Her voice dropped to the level of whisper.

'What confession?'

He gave her some fruits too.

'Thanks.' She put them in nylon.

'You're welcome.'

They sat in the sitting room.

'I have a confession to make.' Her voice dropped to the level of whisper.

'What confession?'

She hesitated. 'Promise you'll not laugh at me or take me unserious.'

He smiled. 'I won't laugh at you.'

'Okay.' She looked at him straight in the eyes. 'I have great feelings for you.'

He looked slightly confused. 'What exactly d'you mean?'

'Great feelings such as pouring my heart to you.'

'Are you not doing that already, as a friend?'

She grinned. 'Well, somehow. But it's not exactly how I want it to be.'

He still played along. 'How d'you want it to be?'

'Maybe you'll understand later.'

'Okay.'

In the drama on the t.v, a woman was accusing her husband of cheating on her. He watched the scene for a while.

'Can I come and join you on the sofa?' There was a seeming innocence from her.

'Why not?'

She came to sit by his side.

'Sorry, what do I offer you?' He stood up. 'I should have asked what you would like to have.'

She shook her head. Nothing for now. Thanks.'

He continued to watch the t.v.

'Ouch!' Her exclamation was sudden.

He quickly turned to her. 'What's that?'

'It's my back again. It hurts.'

He was full of concern. 'Maybe you should see a doctor. What could be the cause?'

'I don't know but if I can get a good massage, I think I'll be alright.'

He remembered the other time she complained of similar thing.

'Let me get the balm.'

He went into his room to get the thing.

'Maybe I should lie on the sofa.' She smiled.

'Okay.'

She removed the brown t-shirt she was wearing and placed her belly on the sofa. He rubbed some ointment on his palms and applied it on her back, slowly moving his palms back and forth. He did it gently and assuredly.
'Yeah, right there, yeah.' Her mutters goaded him.

What are you thinking? He asked himself.

Nothing, his mind answered.

Nothing?

Yes, nothing.

'Are you okay now? Have you had enough?' His words intruded her dream. She laughed as if she found his question funny.

'Almost.' She closed her eyes.

He did the massaging for few more minutes and stopped.

'Wow, this is much better than the last one you did. Thank you.' She sat up.

He smiled and stood up away from her. 'How d'you feel?'

'Much better. Thanks.' She wore her t-shirt.

'You're indeed a good friend.' Her smile was warm. 'Thank you.'

He waved it off. 'You're welcome.'

'If you need massage too, let me know.'

He smiled expansively at her. 'Thanks for the offer, but I'm okay.'

There was a brief silence.

'You must be very different from other guys.' Her words were cool.

'Why did you say so?'

'It's obvious, isn't it?' She smiled again.

'Explain yourself.'

'Okay.' She stared at him. 'Let me put it this way. Let me ask: are you not moved?'

He chortled. 'We're just friends, remember?'

'You've not answered the question. Were you not moved?'

'No, I'm not.' He avoided her gaze.

'Are you sure?' Her teasing smile was back.

'Of course. There's no point in being moved.' He nodded to assert himself more.

'Is it not natural?'

'It is. But with the power God, one has gone beyond the natural.'

'Are you really saying you can't be moved at all because you're above the natural?' There was a hint of challenge.

'By the power of God, whenever I'm tempted, I will always overcome.'

'Are you really, really sure about?' Becky's teasing smile became coquettish.

'Hey, I'm not saying you should tempt me. Becky.'

She slapped him playfully on the leg.

'You must be a superman or something. But, I feel so free with you.'

'Free in what sense?'

'Free to be with you. Free to chat with you. Free to discuss my heart issues with you.'

'It's good to feel free. Bondage is undesirable. However, I'm not a superman. Whatever I'm able to do, to God be the glory. I thank God.'

'Janet is so lucky. She doesn't know she has a precious gem in her hand.'

'My friend, stop your flattery. By the way, I have some fried rice and chicken in the house. Janet brought them. Will you like to have some?'

'I think I won't mind some chicken.'

He stood up to get her some of the delicacies.

Rhoda had the best Christmas she had ever had. Nonso bought clothes and many other things for her. The food and drinks they had during the yuletide was elaborate.

Despite Rose's vituperation on his relationship with Rhoda, Nonso continued to see her. As a matter of fact, the more she raved against his misdemeanor, the more he indulged in it.

Everything was working the way she wanted it to work. His lusts had ensnared him and there would be no getting out of it, she decided.

The New Year started on a promising note.

Raphael joined others to pray for happiness, good health, progress and posterity in the New Year.

They still had about a week more of holiday.

It was like Becky had studied Janet's visiting pattern. The latter usually visited Raphael between eleven in the morning and six p.m. Becky would wait until well after seven p.m. before she would come around to his place.

Despite her very friendly posture, he remained on guard. He remained committed to Janet and would not allow anything to distract that.

On 10th of January, Apez College resumed for Second term. Raphael was glad to be back to work and to see colleagues again. He and Janet had hatched the plan that they would not be seeing in the school again. Even at his home, it would be once or twice a week for now.

He had assured her over and over again that he had intensified his prayers and that God was in complete control.

Becky's aspect was also significant. He liked her but that should be the end of the story. No one could replace Janet's position in his heart no matter how hard that person tried.

On March 10, he celebrated his thirty second birthday. That weekend, Janet came with her friend, Funmi, to his house. Despite telling Janet that he didn't fancy birthday celebration, she brought a big cake and exotic drinks for him. She also presented some gifts to him.

Raphael appreciated Janet and her friend for making his day. He would have loved to take them to a good eatery, and treat them to good food, but Janet said he should not bother as they had brought some food to his place.

Janet had asked Zizi to prepare pounded yam and jollof rice with chicken which were put in food warmers. Raphael was greatly surprised.

'But I didn't invite anyone for any celebration.' He sniffed the aroma of the food and broke into an easy smile.

'I asked Zizi to prepare food only for four people.' Janet explained to him. 'We're three already. You can preserve the rest and eat it another time.'

He was very grateful for all she was doing for him.

At first, Funmi had found it difficult to believe that her friend was in love with him. How could you be in love with someone like him? She had asked Janet in disbelief. What substance would he offer her? Why must she fall into the hands of a probable gold digger?
