In addition, all things being equal, my house is appreciating over the years. If I decide to get out, it's very simple. I sell, pay off the bank and pocket my gains after taxes. As for a car Why would I pay outright for a depreciating asset when I can finance it and invest my money elsewhere and earn good returns? Win win all the way around. Unfortunately Debt is still frowned upon in Nigerian from a cultural perspective because the country is still phsycologically in the 18th century and yet to fully grasp modern concepts. God bless you. Granted that Nigeria is cursed with evil leaders, but I still don't understand why many people are still relying on a useless national grid for electricity. I use solar system both at home and in the office. I enjoy 24/7 electricity absolutely free!! How can one live in the equator where the sun shines non stop and still pay for electricity?? Even if Nigeria would start producing enough electricity to go round, I still will never connect to national grid again.
I also spend next to nothing on water and rent is relatively cheap too. I mean paying 350k for a three bedroom flat with 3 toilets/bathroom, all tiled and neat. Even with a dollar to dollar comparison, folks should note that in England or America, your take home pay is for feeding, rent or mortgage, transportation flexing etc. and you can choose what level of a decent life you want to live. Take home pay in Nigeria is also for those items but in addition it's for generating electricity and water supply, security, bribes, healthcare, savings for pension, school fees, maintenance of assets due to poor infrastructure, etc. Wages in the western world may appear small if you think they are spent on what Nigerians spend their disposable income on.
