profeddor15:
Good morning to the elders in the house. Please I want a clarification on the following questions:
1: Is it only family members (father ,brother or friend) that can give someone gift deed as a proof of funds?.better to use father or mother. Have seen rejections for using non family member and brother for gift deed. Only logical to use parents.
2: Which one is more better to use for proof of funds, savings or current account due to minimum balance quoted by some banks? Any
3: Will someone remove out of the proof of funds as cash at hand on the day when he/ she is traveling to Canada?.
u can go with cash or account statement printed a week before landing. Or mixture of both

After failing IELTS 2 consecutive times,I decided not to write again.I was tired..but when the job I was searching for in Amsterdam went south,I knew I had to go back to re-writing IELTS.I came to this platform to seek for help in listening(my weak point)..and the wonderful people here gave me tips on how to pass it.
I want to thank @NanaF for introducing me to Cambridge series and convincing me that band 9 was very feasible in listening.God bless you abundantly ma'am.I also want to thank @CheesyTee,@adeptonlin,@ifeoma77 and @temas for their tips on how to ace listening.God bless you all.i am indeed grateful.
I finished cambridge series 1-13 and started passing listening with a minimum of band 8 but I started failing writing.I failed twice consecutively that I had to switch to MOD(which i still failed). At this point, I knew I needed help in writing.I had to contact Johnnybravo..I told him that I wanted to unlearn and re-learn writing. That guy is very good and thorough..he can scrutinize..we booked 2weeks session..everyday I would write an essay and he would review it..I started seeing why I was stuck on 6.5..He would review it word for word and give me appropriate synonyms to replace the ones I had written.on one occasion,he told me to use the word 'rationale' to replace 'reasons'.. I said ok..and he says spell it for me..I didnt want to tell him that I had a doctorate degree in engineering analysis and that spelling error is not the reason why I am stuck on 6.5(lol)..he probably thought I would spell it as 'rational'.I am indeed grateful to johnnybravo(we actually attended uniben together{my hall 3 guy}) ..God bless you and I pray your PPR arrives very very soon.
I booked 27 july and still got 6.5 in writing despite Johnnybravo's review...I say na lie..I nor gree..results were released on 9th august..I ordered a remark and booked another test for august 17th,results were released on 30th and I got 7 in writing but (6.5 in speaking)..How on earth can i score 6.5 in speaking? As I was lamenting on my speaking scores,I got a mail that the remark for July 27 was out.I was in Ikoyi today to collect the test report and behold my writing had increased to a 7.0..I almost sublimed..so i stand with:
L8.5 R9 S8 W7.
Finally, I want to thank @yemblaze who advised me to seek help for my writing.she is a wonderful person.she would send me mails asking about my IELTS result and the outcome of my EOR'S.God bless you ma'am.
I am also happy for @venorite..I read your story and it was very inspiring.

MOD and headsets with background noise and unnecessary delay, hian undecided.I know how you feel as I was in a similar situation last year, only that I had 8 in Listening. But believe me when I tell you that I was apprehensive until the result was released. I'll advice that you go with BC next, they're better organized. I can vouch for Mauve 21 center, that was where I wrote my first IELTS (academic, in 2016). Best of luck!
mydeporch:

Wrote with them on 6th July.. there was interference wt their headset. Eventhough they said it does not always happen.i got 7.5 in listening, speaking 7 , writing 7 and dreading 6.5.

Tessie89:
Pls, anybody with experience writing ielts with MOD in Abeokuta, kindly share your experience, do they use head phone or loud speakers?

@Drahl
Kindly share your reading tips.

Thank you.

I would say the reason why I ace reading easily started from secondary school(it was called comprehension then). My school used more of project English text books which had more difficult passages compared to intensive English.

The books I used are:
1.Barron's for IELTS(It is good for reading and has three model tests but it is not ideal for listening probably that was why I failed listening twice)
2.Official IELTS practice materials(It's the conventional red book sold by British council but it has two model tests on reading that are very resourceful).

Online resources:
Road to IELTS(You can only access this when you book with BC and it has two model tests.
I also combined it with MOD reading model tests.
I wouldnt advice using ieltsonlinetests.com(it's too easy),I would recommend mini-ielts.com(it's very very good). [my opinion]
I also used Cambridge academic reading. It is very hard but it will make the actual reading on test day feel like cereals.
There's also a Japanese lady called Toneka(that lady is ingenious, infact, I love her). She has a video where she answered ielts reading and showed all the tricks.you can search for her on youtube. You might find her boring and her English is not too coherent and fluent, but trust me,she is very good.

MY ADVICE AND STRATEGIES:.
1. Don't go beyond the word count limit.no more than two words means maximum of two words.
2.Write all answers in block letters, that way you won't forget to capitalize a proper noun.
3.Time Management:
passage 1 is 13 questions.passage 2 is 14Q. passage 3 is 13Q.
Passage 1 is the easiest and passage 3 is the hardest.I recommend 15mins for P1(or less),15mins for P2,at least 30mins for P3.When you do practice tests, ensure you time yourself so that you don't go overboard.it is imperative.
4.When I get my question booklet,I DONT read the passages, you will be wasting valuable time.Go straight to the questions,For me i read 4 questions once, then i underline the keywords and circle some and replace them with two synonyms,I then go back to the passage and find the answers.Quickly finding answers is a skill that takes time to build.Taking 4Q once helps you save time because in the bid of finding the answer to number 2,you might find the answer to number 3 or 4.(this is better than one question at a time).secondly, the questions in section 1 and 2 are chronological(if you found the answer to number 7 and you cant find the answer to number 6,most probably, the answer to 6 is just above number 7)[this doesnt apply in passage 3].
5. For matching headline with paragraph:you dont need to read the entire paragraph.Read only the first two sentences, the topic sentence is always there. This is enough to summarize the paragraph. If you cant still match it because the information is not enough, read the last sentence(it will contain the summary).I think sometimes(rare cases) they put the summary in the middle. Also, sometimes a paragraph may have quotation marks expressing the speakers thought, that is all you need to read to match it.Another thing i do is;I look at the list of headings and rewrite them with my own words.
for instance,a heading like 'the robots main function'......I replace 'main' with synonyms like primary or key.....i replace 'function' with importance, use or purpose. That way, when i read the first 2 sentences of the passage, the answers are staring at me brightly.
6.For T/F/NG..Most people tend to answer these question based on their knowledge(it is WRONG)If the passage says the capital of Nigeria is Paris, then the capital of Nigeria is Paris.dont infer or deduce.
Passage:Baron pierre de coubertin, the founder of modern olympics aim was to bring together, once every four years, athletes from all countries on the friendly fields of amateur sport.
question:only amateur athletes are allowed to compete in the modern olympics.
answer:NOT GIVEN

Here's another one:John jumped from the 8th floor of UBA house.
question:john died as a result of the fall
Answer:NOT GIVEN(even though we know john would die but it wasnt mentioned in the passage).

Passage: The architectural design of the building is shoe-box shaped.
question :the building has a shoe-shaped design
answer:FALSE

7. It is good to circle peoples name(Xerxes, Einstein), dates, countries, cities etc.For instance, a passage might say 50 years ago,if you focus on 50 years in the passage, you might not see your answer.what i would do is to look for synonyms like 'half a century' or '5 decades ago'.this technique also works for 'SENTENCE COMPLETION' and 'FLOWCHART' questions.
Also, in sentence completion, use ONLY words used in the passage. Dont change the form of the word(if its simple present , write simple present)and the sentence must be grammatically correct with the word/words you have chosen.
8.Learn to practice skimming and scanning:quickly look for key information and quickly read for the main idea.
9.Lastly, I always underline key points on all the passages and find appropriate synonyms to replace them except the ones that cannot be replaced(I think you should because it saves time and you will find the answers easily).{my question paper always looks like a baby learning how to scribble...plenty jaga jaga because na so so underline and circles full my question booklet}

I think the easiest module on the IELTS is reading[my opinion] because the answers are staring at you,all you need to do is search for them.unlike listening, where if you dont hear the word it is finished. These are the tips i have applied.
Lastly, i save 5-8mins to go over my answers.

Disclaimer:There might be better ways to ace the reading module but these are strategies that I have used.

Celebrating little victories. . . .

My efamily,

Join me to thank God oooooo!

I just collected my IELTS results. I wrote on 17th August with MOD.

I have been afraid about the bad experiences from many previous test takers. And that's one of the reasons I have hindered my spouse to come to this Nairaland group as she would be also writing this Saturday.

This is my first and last attempt oooo!

L : 8

R: 7.5

W: 7.0

S: 7.5

Overall band : 7.5

My materials:

I used IELTS Liz YouTube videos for my speaking , listening and writing tips. I also used Jay and Chris ( IELTS advantage ) videos for my writing.

As for reading, I just did a lot of practice using Cambridge 12 and 13 only.

Also for speaking, before the exam I wrote down and practiced over 20 cue card topics on a variety of subjects. It helped a lot during the test as several questions were about what I already practiced. I was just flowing and the examiner enjoyed the conversation we had.

I must say that the key to this exam is practice. Practice using Cambridge material. If you do well in the Cambridge tests you are bound to do well in the real exam.

In writing test, I started with task 2 and spent more time in task 2.

I also tried to proof read my work after writing.

Also, after writing, I used my eraser to clean and replace many key words with different but similar words in order to show the examiner my wide grammatical range. Please do this with caution ooo. Don't use any word that you are not sure about the spelling!

Appreciation:

I want to thank every member of this group and expecially wasseynewest. I was also part of his Whatsapp reading group before he moved Canada.
God bless him for his efforts.

What lies ahead:

I expect to get my ECA from IQAS next month ( I sent my doc's to them since April/May this year ).

I pray that the good Lord will continue to help each and every one of us at various stages of this journey IJN. Amen.

9.Lastly, I always underline key points on all the passages and find appropriate synonyms to replace them except the ones that cannot be replaced(I think you should because it saves time and you will find the answers easily).{my question paper always looks like a baby learning how to scribble...plenty jaga jaga because na so so underline and circles full my question booklet}

I think the easiest module on the IELTS is reading[my opinion] because the answers are staring at you,all you need to do is search for them.unlike listening, where if you dont hear the word it is finished.

IT IS FINISHED!

Drahl:

9.Lastly, I always underline key points on all the passages and find appropriate synonyms to replace them except the ones that cannot be replaced(I think you should because it saves time and you will find the answers easily).{my question paper always looks like a baby learning how to scribble...plenty jaga jaga because na so so underline and circles full my question booklet}

Wow!! I'm motivated.....pls can you share more thoughts on the remaining on my email... skmodaa@gmail.com

Hi Everyone,
I'm just curious and equally upset. I have a course mate in my school who works in the transcript office and I paid for the transcript through him, it has finally gone to them and they sent me an email saying they have sent a verification to the school, I called the guy to help me on that and he said it's a further 5k !!!
I'm just curious cos I really do hate being cheated. For others who have passed through this stage , is there a fee for verification? He said the payment is to the school but I don't believe it!
