But that being said, one cannot minimize the direct local experience from Nigerian shops like Gazzuzz and co.

Trygo talked about rebuilding, tearing the engine down and working on it.

Gazzuzz talked about regular oil change.

Spot the difference sir.

Trygo opens up engine and correct all the wrongs.

Regular car users heard about how good synthetic oil is and went ahead to pour synthetic oil, without any examination of the engine state.

Ga.zz.uzz now is warning that regular car user to be careful not to damage his/her engine. I think it's that simple/void of complications.

Thebigkendo abi I'm not getting something right?

So true, the truth is there are other quality auto experts here , but Gazzuzz seem to outshine most due to the fact that he create superior image in the mind of people, he does his PR very well and know how to create, document and share whatever he does. He is more or less a thought leader here. I call him the Jesus christ of nairaland auto section and he is good.

The benefit of this is that he can charge more within the same industry, all na perception, give people that know less than you info for free, they look up to you and come to you for the implementation you charge them premium.

I believe nairaland autosection is a blessing to us all, you just have to seek others opinion, I called them the silence experts, just sad they dont do PR as good.

Am sure you don't know the things synthetic oil does. First, which synthetic oil are you using? Are you talking about Oando, Conoil etc synthetic oils. Synthetic oils have grades and I will not encourage anyone to use such substandard synthetic oils for their cars. These Oando and the likes import substandard oils abroad and sell. Try Mobil 1 synthetic oil or any good American version of synthetic oil to see the difference. Please note you are advised to use high mileage synthetic oil for cars with more than 75,000 miles to prevent oil leaks. I use high mileage MOBIL 1 USA synthetic oil and this takes my car to an average of 4000 to 6000 km or up to six months before I do any oil change. My mechanic also said he doesn't like synthetic oils because of some problems like you said. To be honest, you cannot compare Mobil 1 Nigeria engine oils to Mobil 1 USA engine oils. The difference is clear. ..and please make sure you are using the right viscosity grade engine oils for your car. Most mechanic use and recommend Mobil 20w 50 which most passenger cars and SUVs from 1990 to date do not recommend. Also for excessive engine sludge you are expected to reduce the engine oil change interval.

The problem we have here, is that people are too lazy to read. They see a news headline and start spreading false info without reading the content. I'd beg to differ in my response here.
But I hope my response won't be deleted afterwards as the others.

In my experiences rebuilding engines, I have seen situations where even an imported vehicle had the valve train, and engine block totally sludged out as in your photos.

There are two scenarios to this:
1. Its either the vehicle wasn't maintained holistically from the previous owner, or...
I have seen vehicles with the so-called full or any classification of synthetic fluids, that turns out to be sludged this way.

The sludging you see, is. byproducts of oxidation, and all that.

So even the synthetic, if not replaced as f she due, would sure turned sludgy as mineral oil.

2. Mineral oil was used, but the user unconsciously decided to exceed the usual OCI for that oil. Some car owners would use the conventional oil, expecting to get more MPGs from it, hence the resultant effect seen.

Purpose of any synthetic oil is FUEL ECONOMY (LOWER EMISSIONS), and ENGINE PROTECTION (this has varying opinions though from people).

Here's how I take care of such engines, when I'm rebuilding them:

Disassembled everything, inspect any components that are worn, replaced, and thoroughly wash every engine components properly using diesel, or thinner, or petrol. Do not wash the O rings pls with the solvents mentioned above.

After rebuild, use recommended Oil, whether synthetic or ....

Almost all vehicles imported here are high mileage ones. So the synthetic people buy, I would advised should be high mileage synthetic oil, and not the regular for newer vehicles. That way, there won't be complaints about oil leaks, etc.

But if the synthetic isn't working for you, switch to conventional oil, and please ensure you replaced that oil 2-3months as the case maybe.

But remember, you're sacrificing fuel economy (emissions-the environment) in this case.

Hope this helps to this discuss.

PS: The OPs warning of problems afterwards should only apply to vehicles whose internal engine components have undergone some serious for of west and tear.

You didn't say anything different. Rather you said the same thing in a different way. When you rebuild a car what do primarily tend to achieve? Is it not to remove sludge( if it has one) and reduce tolerance? In that case you have eliminated the conditions given by op.

Re: Warning!!!! Don't Buy Synthetic Engine Oil by Mrford(m): 12:39pm On Sep 05, 2019
Thugaa:

This is a very misleading post.
Switching from conventional motor oil to full synthetic motor oil is perfectly acceptable.

However, if your vehicle has a high mileage engine (e.g., engine with more than 75,000 miles) that has never used synthetic motor oil, or one that has been poorly maintained with infrequent oil changes, it is recommended to ease into extended oil change intervals to allow the full synthetic oil to clean up the engine. In these cases you should still follow the same basic oil change procedures (drain the old oil, remove the old oil filter, put in new new full synthetic oil and put on a new oil filter).

Follow your OEM’s recommended maintenance practices regarding oil changes, but you should follow more frequent (one or two non-extended drain) oil changes when first switching to synthetic oil. The reasoning behind these shortened oil change intervals is that a high mileage engine, or one that has had a lack of maintenance (including infrequent oil changes), will likely have a considerable buildup of sludge and deposits.

A full synthetic oil will help clean the engine as you drive, but it will have to work much harder in a very “dirty” engine and so it is best to change the oil more frequently for those first several thousand miles. After that, you can be rest assured that the new full synthetic oil is continuing to keep your engine running clean and well lubricated for mile after mile.
.

If you actually read and understood this post there won't be need for this your long epistle

Apt. The worst scenario you can expect buying a tokunbo when you assumed that Full Synthetic was used prior to importation, only to damage your engine with same Full synthetic.

most owners of modern cars in Nigeria dont know what synthetic oil is, they just use 20w50 recommended by our kazeems, dats why you see cars less than 5 years old with smoking engines.

some even use SAE 40 weight on petrol engines.

@Oga Gazzuzz, I use a 2006 Peugeot 206. I had a timing belt cut incident with my engine, my mechanic worked on it and I used it for a year and a half more before it starting smoking and eventually packed up.

Now, 2 months ago, I bought another engine, Tokunbo from Ladipo with a Citroen Sticker on it. It was fixed and I used Total Quartz 7000 for it. That's the first oil. My next servicing is next month and I plan to drain that oil (Quartz 7000) and put Quartz 9000 which is full synthetic oil.

My strategy is to use that 7000 to flush the engine and the use 9000 permanently as service oil for the car.

I'm I making the right decision?

Thanks as you respond.

Honda makes cars, amongst other vehicles, but not oil. They simply rebrand oil that meets their specs.

To save money you can find the source direct.

I still say that you can use any of the locally available oils but you have to be fastidious with oil change intervals.

Read comprehend understand before posting . This is not theoretical, it is practical I fix cars for a living, I also sell full synthetic engine oil.

I learnt this the hard way!
Local kazeem was imported from Lagos to the south south to fix vehicle completely. When he was done, he specifically told me to use Mobil xhp.

After reading some stuff online, I ordered for castrol gtx and the engine never remained the same.
It was like a grinding machine afterwards, I had to sell the vehicle shortly after.

A newer engine still has tight tolerance.

As the engine wears out then tolerances start appearing but gets patched by sludge.

So when you remove that sludge then “Exxon Valdez” appears.
