Why do some Nigerian Police trucks carry grass/hay? Here's the answer.

Pictures of Nigerian Police trucks carrying grass have gone viral many times on social media and people have often been shocked and wondered why a police truck should carry grass. Well, here's the answer.

1) Trucks are designed to haul goods.

Trucks are designed to haul goods. That's one of their main purposes. Many farms have pickup trucks that are used to haul hay, farm produce and equipment.

2) Not all police vehicles are patrol vehicles

The Nigerian Police, like other organisations (companies, etc.), needs to perform a variety of tasks to keep the organisation going and therefore, not all police vehicles are used to chase and apprehend criminals. The police also own vehicles that are used to carry out tasks that do not involve law enforcement. For example, these buses below (Mercedes Benz 0302 and 0303) were quite common in the Nigerian Police fleet in the 1980s. They were used by the Nigerian Police Band and they were also used as staff buses by the police.

3) That truck is not a regular patrol vehicle

That truck is not a regular police patrol vehicle. Read what's written on the side of the vehicle. It belongs to the Nigerian Police Mounted Unit. It is a logistics vehicle for the Mounted Police. It is not a patrol vehicle.

4) The Mounted Police

The Mounted Police is a unit of the Nigerian Police Force. Officers and men of the Mounted Police operate on horseback. They are involved in crowd control (at sports events, political rallies and other such events that have a lot of people), policing street processions, policing areas that have a difficult terrain (e.g. beaches) and police horses are also used in parades and other ceremonial purposes (e.g. escorting the president on Independence Day). Mounted Police do not patrol in trucks. They patrol on horseback.

(Those are NDA cadets in the last picture above, but you get the idea).

5) This is not a side hustle or private business and it's got nothing to do with cows or Fulani herdsmen

The grass in that truck is used to feed police horses. They are not used for the private business of policemen or their bosses, they are not for Fulani herdsmen or any such civilian group. The grass is used to feed police horses. Police horses must eat and they eat grass.

6) There's nothing strange about this practice. It's done around the world.

That truck is not a patrol vehicle. It belongs to the Mounted Police and it is used to haul grass/hay for police horses, to carry equipment for the horses and to tow horse trailers. There's nothing strange about this practice. It's done around the world. This is a Chicago Police Department pickup truck hauling grass for their mounted police unit after a Thanksgiving parade. Note the hay on the back of the pickup truck, on the floor and on the payloader.

Mounted police vehicles are used around the world to haul hay/grass, to carry equipment for the horses and to tow horse trailers. They are logistics vehicles.

7) Safety concern

The problem in the case of the Nigerian mounted police is that they dumped too much grass in the truck (overloading) and that the load wasn't properly fastened to prevent it from spilling from the truck, obstructing other road users or impairing their vision.

Right, a memory before I go.

I remember the advice that Old Girl gave to someone that was planning a major event in the early 1980s (this must have been around 1982 or '83). She told him to get mounted policemen to police the event. She said that policemen on foot were completely useless at that type of event because thugs would simply "collect their guns from them".

This reminds me of Lagos '89.

Lagos State hosted the National Sports Festival in 1989 and the female football event was held at a field that was very close to where I lived. I went to watch the games every evening at 4pm.

Female football was still very new, so I guess that the organisers thought that there would not be many spectators. There were only a few unarmed policemen at the venue.

However, Lagos, Bendel and Rivers State teams were exceptional. They showed that women could play good football and their matches attracted huge crowds. The police could not cope with the crowd. Fights broke out. I saw a guy that I knew slap another guy and that guy collapsed to the floor. I never knew that you could knock someone out by slapping him. That was the first time that I ever saw anything like that. I saw it again a few days later because a policeman knocked someone out by slapping him.

The organisers soon realised that those unarmed policemen on foot were inadequate to police the games and mounted policemen were invited to police the later stages of the competition. Order was restored.

Anytime anyone got carried away and got too close to the field, one mounted policeman would charge down the touchline and the crowd would move back. People were terrified of the horses.

I saw lots and lots of events at the venue in the 1980s. I believe that it took a minimum of 12 policemen on foot to effectively police that place when there was an event, but only 4 mounted policemen could do the job effectively.

Mounted police charge at protesters during a demonstration in the UK.

The action of the mounted police angered the protesters and the protest became a riot.

IDLE NIGERIANS DON'T EVEN THINK BEFORE THEY LASH OUT.

I WONDER IF THEY EXPECT THE POLICE TO TRANSPORT ANIMAL FOOD WITH AIRPLANES OR JEEPS, WHEN THERE ARE POLICE TRUCKS DEDICATED FOR THAT DEPARTMENT.

What? The foreign vehicles are not loaded as such. The FRSC should actually arrest them for overloading.

I still have 2 Questions unanswered:

1. Why did they choose to carry hay - and not planks?
2. What do Police use the hay for?

I trust the Nigerian police, they will definitely take advantage of this to make money and use getting grass to feed police horse as guise to supply Fulani herdsmen grass.
