it may be free for passengers but not free for Alan, he paid for fuel, logistics and airport usage charges and the wicked SA immigration still held down half of the intended returnees.

The flight left Nigeria empty. Money could have been made.
There were other logistics involved, not just air time.
What about the time the plane spent from monday to wednesday waiting for the rescheduled arrangements to be concluded? He'd have to pay for hangar time.
Now, consider how much he could have made with that single plane flying other routes rather than stay trapped for those three days...

280m is much, but I dont know the economics of his business and wouldn't doubt it.

to and fro empty seat flying in cost 30m too (oppurnity cost )...that 60m percycle they plan 3 trips (6 cycle) 180m plus airport land lending charge etc maybe 20m total 200m

Those of you criticizing him, why didn't you guys contribute your pennies for the return of these guys, if the guy likes he can claim $280m, why didn't Nigerian government put aircraft to evacuate Nigerians? And if not for this man many people will still be in SA not knowing their fate and perhaps, will be dead in a few weeks time

He’s a businessman man and serious business people must always calculate their financially based actions in terms of figures because there has to be a realistic budget for it.

Also,his ultimate goal is to make more profit and establish his airline as a leader in the aviation sector in the region,so this is more or less a CSR action with more business opportunities,goodwill,waivers and so on in sight.

Let him throw his figures around after all the government of the day receiving revenue from all sources including seizing of assets couldn’t even think of evacuating these stranded citizens.

May be the aircraft was in SA for so many days without being used waiting for the returnees.Meaning it should have fetched money if it was put to commercial use in Nigeria or other places

He's a businessman and saying all that is also a means to promote air peace. I'm a businessman and i know what it means to spend money and also look for strategies to recoup back with more interest. He's not trying to get accepted cos he has money already, he's selling his brand...

The problem with most people is that they are so eager to please the world and get accepted into the bandwagon that they are afraid to speak their minds. It's a good thing that he volunteered to help evacuate our brothers in south Africa, without collecting money (as far as we know). And the beneficiaries were particularly grateful. If he's doing it out of the goodness of his heart and doesn't truly expect payment as he said I the beginning, why gloat about it when the job is not even completed? Except he's expecting some form of remuneration or acknowledgement from the government, in which case it will not be out of place to truly question his absurd claim of transporting less than 200 people from South Africa to Nigeria in just a trip with 280 million naira.

Let's learn to be objective instead of being sentimental all the time. If you buy me a 5000 naira lunch at a regular restaurant and while I'm still eating you're already telling the world that you spent over 20,000 naira to feel me, should I just remain quiet in the spirit of being grateful?
