Is that all you can make out of that article, are you a smuggler?
We better keep quiet when we have nothing to say. Your country should come first before any other thing.

Our border in the core North is so open for terrorists to troop into Nigeria,

smuggling is an unchallenged business there

Despite all these tight measures and beefing up of security at the borders, Boko Haram ammunitions still infiltrate the polity.

Who is deceiving who?

Maybe these measures are specifically for some set of people.

They are closing Southern borders because Christmas is around

The Core Northern Borders are all open for even terrorists

smuggling in the North is Normal thing.

Things will only be expensive as it is now only for a short time. By the time people see the only option we have is to consume our locally produced goods, it will encourage more to go into the production. This in the end will bring competition among the producers... naturally, the prices of these items will crash.

Look beyond now, pls
bro stop believing all this economic principles. It doesn't apply in a country like Nigeria where we have many greedy and corrupt individuals.

Have you bothered to find out how much is a bag of our locally produced Rice?

bro, this is not theory. It's practical. Locally produced rice for now will be very expensive because we don't have enough to go round and Nigeria being a country filled with corrupt and opportunistic people will experience a hike in the price of the available little.

Now imagine the Federal Government leaving the borders closed for another 3years,...lemme remind you that any business that brings in good money in Nigeria will be 'flooded' till the business crashes or becomes less profitable. What I am trying to say here is that, with the kind of money farmers will make during this period of border closure will encourage many more people go into farming...and before you know it, there will be more than enough to go round...and before you know it, farmers will be struggling to get people to buy their own...

Bro, this is beyond corrupt Nigerians. It's a natural thing. The price will crash.

Good !

How can Benin Republic with a population of 16millon become the sixth largest importer of rice in the world and the largest importer of rice in Africa.

Sometimes I doubt anything like Pan-africanism ever existed.

Yet, the president of Benin wants Nigeria to open its borders for further exploitation.

https://www.worldatlas.com/articles/the-largest-rice-importers-in-the-world.html

They are taking Nigeria's loophole to their advantage, now that we are on top of the game, yawa gas on their head. Begging has just started.
Control smuggling and we will resume business, if you don't, you lose all

True, but that is the only point you can station a hydro power plant with maximum discharge.

Enough of behaving as a caring MOTHERLY Big brother. Our experience with South Africa should be an eye opener. It is time to use the big stick as an intimidating FATHERLY Big brother.

That's how America rolls in its relationship: If you are getting one from me then I should get two in return on my own terms.

Your point on big brother Africa and South Africa/ US examples have no logic in this context. Firstly, the rice exporters know most of the rice exported to Benin is for Nigeria. Secondly, the importers are investors, importers and business men in Nigeria.
Thirdly, a bag of rice in Lagos now cost between 18K and 19K per 50KG bag while Derica tin poor man buys between 220 and 250 naira now cost between 350 and 400 naira and still increasing. This is the imported rice price and the only rice in traditional local / open market. In South West, South South and South East Nigeria where I spent months on local rice availability research, there is no Lake, Olam or any other locally produced rice in the open market. Coscharis may make rice available in the East but not yet.

There is no GLUT in the rice production sector in Nigeria, no availability in the market. The President, NSA and Customs CG are all from the Nigerian Army, I think the Staff College, War College and NIPSS courses in those days were very defective about management.

I also noticed the inclusion of Niger border closure is just a camouflage. I don't want to dwell on that today.

South Africa is too developed to be affected by economic policies of the frontline States. The US concerns herself so much about the welfare and wellbeing of her citizens. US cannot ban importation of rice to protect Arkansas farmers or rice mills in the US when there is a shortage.

you say there isn't enough locally produce rice to go around that's why it's expensive, right. Now since there isn't enough to go around why didn't the government wait for there to be enough to go around before they close the border.

Think about it, there isn't enough local rice to go around and it's expensive, now that the border is close what do you think will happen to the little local rice that is around? The price will triple and who will bear the burden?

There are business that brings in good money that will never be flooded because the capital to start it is something else.

The federal government is making a very big mistake with this move. I hope you know the price of chicken have gone up now?
