I oppose the motion, don't do it please. This stuff doesn't guarantee you Visa cha cha, otherwise people will volunteer to pay such fees without the school asking grin grin grin

Please, help with suggestions/ideas on how best to write a personal statement. I will have to introduce myself, and then state why I want to join a research group.

Hello everyone, Please I would appreciate your opinions on my query.

I plan on doing my master’s in Business Analytics in America or Canada next year and I need some advice on schools or advice in general.

I have not been so good at school as I came out with a second class lower in economics, Statistics is not really a problem for me and I have some passion for programming as I am self-taught in python and JavaScript which is why I looked towards data science majorly because of the machine learning and some attractive things that are taught with the program that I am personally interested in.

I also do not have a lot of working experience, after graduation, I have just done my NYSC and currently working on my business, I would need some advice on some schools to look at, what I should have before applying and the rest. Please be brutally honest with your replies.

I have done some searching on my own and, I have found a moderate school (M.S. in Business Analytics at Oklahoma State University) their requirements are not too high and based on their courses, its something I am very interested in learning.
funding isn't really a problem although anything around 10-15k a year would be good. Thank you

cc sheke01, bracelum, BigFrancis21, shayhune, lagosismyhome, fairheart, and any other person that has insides into this. Thank you.

Firstly, am against doing the stand alone business analytics program. It's better as an international student to do a jack of all trades "management information systems with concentration in business analytics" or "information systems with similar concentration", than to do a stand alone business analytics. Business analytics is all about providing solution to business by analysing data. One, you are foreign and employers know you barely know the business terrain, so why limit your career options.

Secondly, forget about your prior grades as it would only count as much as you want it to. My mechanical engineering degree has no bearing on what I do now, so whatever grades I had then, means nothing. Good a thing you have passion in statistics, programming etc. If you don't know SQL, go and learn it too. It would come in handy as you step into the data world.

I doubt if your 10k - 15k a year budget is realistic o, as business schools pay higher tuition compared to other faculties. And funding is hard to come by too as this field is seen as a "cash cow" which school use to make money. They are all taking advantage of the hype surrounding data and analytics and are creating all sorts of courses with data, analytics.

I don't know any school to recommend for you as I don't know your pocket. Trust me, you would want to do this school search yourself.

Forget about your non existent job experience. You can always start from scratch. Look onto the bright side. On the other hand, you have a lot of work ahead of you and thousand of dollars to spend on tuition. Be prepared.

VISA Issued transcript (46 days on AP)
So here it is, I’m not very good at telling stories but the whole idea of schooling in the USA started in 2014 while in the university of Ibadan I have cousins and family there that have never even been to Nigeria so I always knew I would like to school there,
Fast forward to 2017 during NYSC I started following the initial rudiments of writing necessary tests for admission in USA, wrote Toefl gre and before the end of service last year I had applied to two different programs at OU-university of Oklahoma, guess what ? I was denied, first, I applied for MSC geology , denied
Applied for transfer admission using my degree(more like direct entry) denied again, same school same department, I knew the issue was my CGPA obviously, had 309 in GRE, 98 in Toefl, sterling SOP(even wrote for a friend that got in)
But that 2nd class lower cgpa ehn, did me strong thing, looks high on Unibadan’s 7 point grade but quite low 2:2 on 4 and 5 point grades
Getting fraustrated because I really wanted a school in Oklahoma. Main reason- my people Dey there !
So I applied, again to another uni in Oklahoma, university of central oklahoma, I didn’t bother with masters, I just applied straight for transfer to my choice department.
I got admission in December 2018, resumption too close for comfort I deferred to spring 2019,
July 2019 I received my I-20 with a letter of scholarship of about $5000 per session.
5th of August 2019 I attended my first Visa interview at ABUJA embassy
After all the long checking in and procedures I met the VO, very short interview(exchanged pleasantries)

VO: pass me your I-20.
I did
VO: oh I see here, university of central Oklahoma
So where did you learn about this school
Me: I checked online and learnt about it on USNews (I actually found out from a cousin that went there but to avoid immigration talks)
VO: so why are going for this course ( energy economics)
Me: I learnt about a position open for applicants with a degree in geology with a background in finance while I was working at the ministry of energy and mineral resources for my NYSC, I believe having this degree combined with my geology degree would give me a good chance and also place me in good standing for my MBA
(No questions about why another degree grin , zanku inside my head)
VO: who is going to pay for this and can I see any financial documents backing it
ME: my uncle (while passing her my SOA and letter of sponsorship ) I also got a scholarship from the school even though I didn’t apply
VO: (looking closer at the I-20) oh I see that here and I see it’s about $5000
Me: yes, I also have made a payment of $2400 as tuition deposit ( I passed her the reciept from the school for that)
She looked at it passed it back and the letter and kept the statement of account which had about 101m naira in it with. ARM investments
VO: did you take any standardized tests
I didn’t hear that so she repeated
(I just laughed inside because I was about to show her GRE which is meant for a masters course) I passed it to her she looked impressed and passed it back
I am approving your visa (passed me a white paper and another small sheet with instructions for POE)
VO: I’m going to have to hold on to the statement of account for verification.... she went on about fraud all the banning things, I just nodded and smiled, she didn’t even mention AP.
I tracked online later that day only to see AP. Aug 5 and resumption was Aug 19th.
Fast forward to today, I just checked and found it issued after the long annoying wait, was updated on 26th of August long after I had deferred till December. Then issued today.

Before you think it, I know this transcript and interview is super weird but I thank God for answers to prayers and for the victory at last.
P.S I had always been silent here except once before my interview and a few times after, but I thank everyone that have answered my questions here even though I didnt know what to ask as my case was so different from everyone’s so I just prepared myself from the past transcripts to know what they usually ask and from my Retired professor uncle in university of Oklahoma.
It’s been a great journey and cheers to more success.
Sorry did you do WES for your cgpa conversion?

Free advice for intending international students who want to use studies as an immigration route. Please look towards Canada, Germany and the UK:given the fact that the UK is bringing back the 2 year post study visa. The USA should be a last resort.

Lol. That's why I said free advice, you can take it or leave it but the truth is that the US isn't immigrant friendly presently.

All man to his own though.

Germany education is free, but the block account of €7k is very discouraging. What does one do a about that?

Hello house.

I have read substantial amount of posts but can never cover all. I realised the questions being asked are fairly the same -

What will this course do for you?
Why are you going for the degree?
Why this school?
What other schools did you apply to?
What would you be doing after your studies? Etc

I do not think there is an exact answer to any of these questions but it would be helpful if prospective applicants know WHY these questions are being asked to help us respond appropriately.

If there is a link to where my query has been addressed in the past, could someone kindly point it out to me. Thanks

There's no harm in going through the whole thread, if you are serious about it.

Those questions are questions that you can answer on your own s you see various ways people answer the questions.

PLEASE HELP!
Good evening everyone!
I have a very important question as regards bank statement.
Can one use two separate bank statements? That is, when the one used in applying for graduate school at the initial stage is different from that which is tendered at the embassy?
Yes you can, I did that and had no issues. Situations/ Circumstances change, Sponsors decide to pull out, you may decide not to use a certain sponsor anymore. The only thing is that if this is asked, be able to answer convincingly why the change in sponsorship.
Good Luck

I still see a certain school popping up till 2019, it's name has been known since when I applied over 7 years ago and still does till now so let me just scare those who are planning on using such rogue schools first:
1. VIU (Virginia International University) - Chances of Visa approval: 0% (you will only keep enriching the embassy's economy and bank account)
2. DeVry University - Chances of Visa approval: 0% (Same as above)

3. Community Colleges - Chances of Visa approval: 10% (only 1 in 10 applicants might get a visa approved, and this number is me being generous, don't think you will be that miracle applicant. Get better schools with better chances)

4. Any school in the U.S with 80% and above acceptance rating : Visa Approval: 10% (The higher the acceptance rating of a school, the harder your chances of getting a visa, try to look for schools with 75% and below as much as possible). To find acceptance ratings, you can use google, there are many sites that will show you, e. g U.S news, even google search might give it to you.)

please feel free to add to this list as more rogue schools might have reared their ugly heads in 2019, lets help enlighten those who are newbies so they don't make these expensive mistakes.

I did not say it's not possible that's why I said 10%, other factors definitely could help that individual case, however if a school accepts every tom, dick and harry, chances are that their requirements may not be strignent enough. and I said if one can "as much as possibe" look for schools with lesser acceptance ratings. I've seen a few get visas for a school with 94% acceptance but it's extremely rare. However, it's each individual's choice on the school they decide to apply to and decide to go to upon admission.

The acceptance rate of a school does not have anything to do with visa approval. Even VIU has a 40% acceptance rate. Colorado State Uni (among the top 100 public schools in the US) has an acceptance rate of 83%.
