Since the 21st century, Economist have been using night time satellite images as part of their indices to find out and track a regional economic development. The image below is from 2016. Notice where Nigerian true economic activities lies at.

Afonjas claimed that the light in the South South is gas flare but the one in Europe and Asia and other parts are not gas flare

The lights in the waters surrounding Nigeria are gas flares.

Shows you just how densely populated the Anambra/Imo/Delta axis is!

One would have thought Kano would be lit up like a christmas tree....seeing as they claim to take after Lagos in population! undecided

Sincerely if you enter some states in Nigeria 10years ago and revisit same states today you may not see any reasonable changes, development. The day I read that cholera is still killing people in Nigeria, which means no access to good clean water,I nearly cried. 21st century and Nigeria citizens can't boost of ordinary water. It's bad and sad cry

I don’t totally believe this as an index for regional economic development.

Those light you are seeing are mostly generators. The southern region is chocked up and so densely populated. The need for generator to cool off at night and be on the same level with neighbors (in light generation)

To run a generator cost money. Those who can afford it have light at night. Those who cannot afford it stay in darkness.

This is an indirect show of disposable income. Which is the money that is left over after basic human needs are met.

You would believe that there is a place of luxury and a place of necessity.

Don’t stay in the south deceiving yourself o bro.
Many of these nothern states do have at least 20hours of electricity daily. Hence, no need for a generator except for luxury.
Even in some parts of Osun State, 20-22hrs of light is non-negotiable.

I remember my stay in the south east, Umuahia and Aba to be precised. The lights there were wack. They needed generator so badly to survive, generator became a necessity.

Don’t let anyone deceive you with this north thingy o, Na there dem dey pack our money go o.

I am beginning to wonder if we are both looking at the same pictures.

So if the North get such amount of electricity as you claim, why are they very poor and lack so many industries? Why haven’t they developed their region. What is the excuse?

If what you say is true, they should be the most developed region in Nigeria.

You cannot develope without steady electricity. So what is stopping the north that gets 22 hours of electricity as you claim.

You wanna argue development or the Energy?
How many places in the south has much industrial development apart from the Lagos/Ogun axis?
What most southerners call industrial activities are nothing but commercial activities.

Moreover, how many countries with higher energy generation in Africa have much industrial and technological development ?

I concur with what that guy wrote.....Oshogbo in osun state has more than 23hrs of light a day....Northern states also has soo many hrs of light but it beats my imagination why there are so many few industries there . I think one thing industries consider is nearness to market. That's why a state like Ogun has more industries than any state because of its proximity to lag.

Light at night is a sign of prosperity and economic activities.

If there is truly any place in Nigeria that gets 20 to 23 hours of electricity and that place is not well developed with vibrant economy, then the people living in that place should give up on life.

I can only imagine the level of growth that will happen to the south east if they get 2/3 of that electricity. Majority of south east businesses rely on generators.

It’s crazy how some groups in Nigeria get to enjoy what Igbos struggle hard to get yet their lives are not any better.

90℅ of the lights in the south are gas flares that explains the lights offsure and besides those areas are densedly populated with small map area so its easy for a chain of electricity distribution, i live in jos and i must say we actually enjoy steady power supply upto 5-7 uninterupted supply days a week.

You are missing something quite obvious, if there is electricity there and no need for generators, y is the place not lit at night as per the images? Darkness at night also translates to lack of economic activities

The bolded is exactly what 'one Nigeria' is all about in relation to how its political-economy either benefits or subjugates and holds down a region/people!

The South-East is looking for at least 15 hours of electricity per day on average to help power its economy, but doesn't get it! Yet in the same country, another/other region/s people tell me are supposed to be treated equally with us in a just and fair 'one Nigeria' are getting 20 to 23 hours of electricity per day! One would have expected those regions with this politically engineered advantages would be the most developed in the country and bubbling with industries, but however the reverse is the case! Just goes to show you gain nothing from wickedness and hate!

Did you take a look at Kano....the economic and industrial powerhouse of the North? Compare it to Lagos or even Anambra and see the difference!

It’s those types of comments that make me know that Nigeria will never be developed. How can someone be bragging that their city/state gets 22 hours of electricity yet their economy is a mess and their living conditions look like shite.

Just googling some of those places makes you want to vomit.

there is no light where I stay, but for security reasons I won't mention the name, but since almost a month, me and my room mate usually charge our phones at generator charging points that usually collect N20 from us per phone, right now I am using two power banks, if I use bone dead, I will go and charge it before the second one too dies, the local government chairman just brought a new transformer to our area, they have connected wires to it but they have not finished the installations, so when talking about light issue in Nigeria, it is not a joking matter at all

earlier today, I went to charge at the generator charing point and the guy was just repairing his generator, he said it has fault, i was like SEE TROUBLE!!!

before I came here I have never used power banks in my life, but when I see that I will be extinct like a dinosaur online, I was forced to buy TWO!!!

We are not paying for light in Nigeria, we are paying for darkness!!

There is no gas flaring in Anambra but the light in the state dwarfs other states apart from Lagos , Abuja and Rivers, also the belt between anambra and imo is perhaps the most lighted belt
