I did not say it's not possible that's why I said 10%, other factors definitely could help that individual case, however if a school accepts every tom, dick and harry, chances are that their requirements may not be strignent enough. and I said if one can "as much as possibe" look for schools with lesser acceptance ratings. I've seen a few get visas for a school with 94% acceptance but it's extremely rare. However, it's each individual's choice on the school they decide to apply to and decide to go to upon admission.
what's your rationale for the 10%? Do you have statistics to back it up?...or you dine with the VOs?

Most of the ones you see are majorly for undergraduate. Though you may be right but don't make it sound factual.

The acceptance rate of a school does not have anything to do with visa approval. Even VIU has a 40% acceptance rate. Colorado State Uni (among the top 100 public schools in the US) has an acceptance rate of 83%.
No worries I will not argue, Colorado state uni has an acceptance rate below 80%, it's in the 70's not sure where you got 83% from neither are they in the top 100, Top 200 probably but not top 100 not sure where you get your statistics from, and about VIU not sure why the embassy frowns at the school but they do till now and i'm certain this isn't news to you especially for international students.

However, I'm only giving my two cents.

Please do you think it's very necessary to take GRE for Chemisty in ETSU? Thanks
sharwama:

ALL my African guys in Chemistry department got full funding this fall. I don't know about the availability of funding for Spring but I do know you have a really good chance as long as your overall application is impressive. ETSU is pretty generous. We work for them and we get a degree almost for FREE grin grin grin
I wish you all the best.

Hello guys,
Please, i need suggestions as to SAFE schools to apply for ECONOMICS ( MS or PhD ) using the profile below

BSc. Economics
GPA : 3.8/4
GRE : 300 (Poor though but don't wish to rewrite)
Verbal= 144
Quant= 156
AWA = 4.0

Your input will highly be appreciated.
Thanks.

This is my opinion and you don't have to take it.

I think you should focus on getting your master's first. Getting into a PhD program with a bachelor's from Nigeria is extremely difficult, if not impossible, because undergraduate and graduate economics programs in Nigeria don't prepare you for the quant-heavy economics PhD in the U.S. and admission committees know this. In fact, the economic theory being taught in Nigeria and other parts of Africa is outdated. Here, people talk about game theory, rational expectation, DSGE models, and so on.

To prepare for PhD, try to take Calculus 1 and 2 while doing your master's. If you can, also take calculus 3, linear algebra, and probability theory. If you want to get into elite institutions like MIT and University of Chicago; then, you should take differential equation and real analysis too. Try to complete a decent economics research paper (under an advisor) and present the results in a conference. Learn how to use Stata (the statistical package for economists). Start thinking of retaking the GRE, PhD admission is becoming tougher.

For your master's, apply to schools that don't have PhD programs to improve your chances of getting funding. The American Economic Association has a list of econ graduate programs in the U.S. and different rankings of these programs too.

Good luck!

baba even with 100% acceptance as long as it's a genuine and registered school, you stand the same chance with everybody except ivy league schools are their likes.

Acceptance rate has nothing to do with Visa approval.

Wasn't trying to make it factual, again this is my opinion just based on the amount of interviews experiences I've seen over the years and the results of a couple of people I advised (those who took it and those who did not). I'd rather advice every prospective student to strive a little better in their search for schools since this is a major decision they are about to make (going to another country to study, ticking all the right boxes will make the process much easier)

On U.S News, they are currently No. 166, their acceptance rate for fall 2018 was 84% however over the years they've averaged around 78% acceptance. But again that's not the issue here.

No wahala sir if you say so, apply to DeVry university or advise those close to you to do same. it is registered and genuine and has an acceptance rating of around 95% and i'm absolutely certain you'll be given admission and come back with visa story. Again I didn't say people do not get visas with such, it does happen as I know a really few cases however, it is very few compared to those international students who applied to more selective schools.

Here are the requirements for Berea college for international students in the United States. I'm thinking of taking the IELTS, as I'm very good in English, and of course, I'll read for the exam like my life depends on it.

I need your advise, please.

Take this really serious.

My roomie is in PhD economics program. He did not get a masters degree, he told me he won’t advice his enemy to do the same, no matter how huge and attractive the offer is.

They are tied at number 79 (I'm talking about public schools in the US.) That's not the issue here though.

good afternoon everyone.

I got an admission for masters of public health, but on receiving my i-20 i saw health/health care administration/management.

hope this is not a problem?

thank you

It's no problem, there's always a general name for a group of courses. E.g I was admitted for Applied Clinical Research but my I-20 reads Medical Scientist. This same Medical Scientist covers for a student of Medical Technology Quality.

No, I don't think it is "very necessary", I just think it's a "sensible" thing to do coz sometimes VOs question if you have taken standardized tests or not to help them satisfy their curiosity about the authenticity of your studentship. It's not a guarantee that you'd get your Visa approved because you took the test, but it's just a way of making sure there are no loopholes. It's like saying "anyhow you want it, I am ready for you today today" grin grin grin
I wish you all the best.

Hello , I guess you talking about University of New Haven . I had same issue then for my I 20 read Health/ health Administration instead of MPH . That didn't however affect the outcome of my interview in August.

Just don't mention anything about MPH at all. All your plans and responses should be on your new course.

Best of luck.

2. Were you given study materials?

3. What are your scores?

45k as at when I registered
U can access study materials freely even from ppl in this group. I have study materials so I didn't ask them for any and they add u to a telegram group to help ur study
I prepared lazily though. I got 295 and I'm cool with it especially when compared with how I prepared
