You clearly have no idea what you are talking about if you believe that corruption in those other aforementioned countries is more "hidden and punished" than in Nigeria. Is it hidden in Saudi Arabia where each of the over 15,000 princes is entitled to a monthly stipend ranging from $30,000 to $350,000, plus other allowances such as "palace allowance"?, the Al-Saud family alone is worth an estimated $1.4 trillion, and it all comes from the Saudi treasury. Is it hidden in Russia where an estimated $20 billion was laundered to several banks in the U.K, Moldova and Latvia in the notorious "laundromat" scandal between 2010 and 2014?, a case that implicated Igor Putin, a cousin to the Russian President, Vladimir Putin. Yet till today, nothing has happened. Is it hidden in the U.S where billions of dollars are donated every year by "lobbyists" to top government officials for favours and contracts?, A country where, till today, they can't account for the over $1 trillion spent on the F-35 stealth fighter project. Let me not even talk about India, Brazil and co. How much is the entire Nigerian budget compared to these figures?.

You think because we have these corruption scandals here and there(many of which are even unfounded and politically motivated), then Nigeria has it worse than all other countries of the world?. You need to see beyond emotions, it has clearly affected your sense of self worth.

Corruption is in our DNA? grin really?.

grin A typical Nigerian mindset, it can only be us..just take a look at the 2008 financial crisis only one banker
Kareem seragaldim was jailed in the us and for just two years mind you.... corruption hidden?? For where....it’s been legalized that’s why it isn’t termed as corruption anymore.

I will not be drawn into the futile cycle of arguments that has pervaded this thread over the past few pages, I have so far tried very much to abstain from it.

Nigeria is "fantastically corrupt", how much is stolen from Nigeria's treasury compared to Saudi Arabia(where the state coffers is more or less the property of the Al-Saud dynasty), or India where corruption has become a holocaust, or Russia that is a classic example of plutocracy and cronyism, or even the US where corruption is state sanctioned in form of "lobbying" and national policies are scripted by big corporations?. Oh, I am not in any way saying that corruption is not deeply rooted in the Nigerian society, but we make it seem as if we have it worse than all other countries of the world, when in fact, we are doing fairly well when you take into consideration our meagre fiscal revenue and the cumbersome form of governance (presidential with a bicameral legislature) we are currently practicing.

I am of the opinion that Nigerians exhibit too much hysteria tinged with inferiority complex on issues that certainly don't warrant such. The fact that David Cameron called Nigeria fantastically corrupt doesn't mean we are fantastically corrupt, at least if we are to go by the dictionary meaning of "fantastically".

Before coming to conclusions, we should always bear in mind that there are informations we are not privy to,which usually influences the decisions of the government. In the days of President Yar'adua, Prime Minister Gordon Brown offered Nigeria a weapons deal worth $350 million in order to "secure the Niger Delta region" from militancy. Yar'adua attended the meeting in Downing Street, drank tea, smiled politely and nodded his head as Brown chattered endlessly about the British "special package" of military hardwares. He left the meeting and came back to Nigeria to offer the militants an amnesty programme, discarding British advice of escalating the war against the militants. Today, we have managed to pacify the Niger Delta region(at a negligible cost). In truth, Gordon Brown only cared about oil in the region and was willing to supply as much weapons as was needed to support British and American interests. If Yar'adua had towed the line of sustaining the conflict, we'd still be at war with MEND and other groups till today, and many Nigerians from that region would be displaced. In that instance, Brown will say Nigeria rejected British help.

I will be the first to agree that Jonathan didn't handle the BH crisis well and corruption was quite pervasive during his administration, however, in this case, Cameron is simply playing to the gallery for his own reasons.

You are simply deflecting from the main subject which is Nigeria. I'm not concerned about what is happening in these countries you mentioned but they are economically better than us. An example of a fantastic corruption is the ONSA using the north east insurgency as a front to fund the PDP campaign and also enrich individuals. The north east insurgency has been and is still a cash cow for the military top brass. In these countries you mentioned I doubt if all these happenings will go unpunished. I agree that Dasuki has been taking to court but four years after, no conviction, nothing, you know why? Make a guess. Some of them in a different North East insurgency heist, where given just a slap on the wrist and told to return just a little from the much they have stolen. Recently 3 military boys absconded with millions of naira they were supposedly escorting for a major general, where did he get the money from? Did I hear you say he is being court marshalled. Na paddy paddy go kill that case, because they all are in the same league. I will scoff at your idea that "Nigerians exhibit too much hysteria tinged with inferiority complex", or whatever you will like to call it next time. And in all these, young men are being unnecessarily killed in the North East without any one batting an eyelid. Mtcheeeeew.

Let me foreclose further comments on this issue by submitting that Nigeria's problem is more of poverty than corruption. If we are generating revenues to the tune of hundreds of billions of dollars every year, the theft of a few billions will hardly be noticed, and the effect on national development would be very limited, that is why big countries can get away with such massive corruption and financial waste. Even if a kobo is not stolen from our current budget, it is still grossly inadequate to cater for us as a nation.

It is almost impossible to practice Constitutional Republican form of democracy without corruption.

Lol. You really are a dreamer. Let me ask you this, if the salaries of the Nigerian police, FRSC and associated security bodies is quadrupled right now will that make them stop collecting egunje on our roads?

If we start paying our governors 100 million monthly salary will that make them stop robbing the state treasury dry? If we quadruple the salaries of our public employees will that make them stop demanding for bribes before they can do what they were hired to do?

It's not poverty that we have. It's far more worse than that. If you can't see it then I'm not going to engage with you further on the issue.

*PRESS RELEASE*

*TROOPS RESCUE KIDNAPPED VICTIMS FROM BOKO HARAM CRIMINALS, DESTROY IMPROVISED EXPLOSIVE DEVICES AND RAID KIDNAPPERS DEN*

In continuation of the Nigerian Army's drive to clear marauding criminal insurgents and other unscrupulous elements from Operation LAFIYA DOLE and other theatres of operations nationwide, troops of 151 Battalion in conjunction with elements of 21 Special Armoured Brigade's Quick Response Force (QRF) thwarted the kidnap of 3 civilians by the criminal insurgents. This rescue operation occurred at about 12:20 pm on 4 October 2019 when the said troops, while acting on information volunteered by some patriotic indigenes, blocked and engaged the criminal insurgents in a fierce fire fight at a crossing point around FIRGI village in BAMA LGA of Borno State, leading to the rescue of the civilians and a Canter truck loaded with grains. The criminal insurgents, who succumbed to the superior fire power of the troops, abandoned the hijacked truck and its occupants and fled in disarray into the forest. The gallant troops are still on the trail of the criminal insurgents while the rescued victims have been escorted safely back to their destination. Troops continue to dominate the area and deny the criminal elements freedom of action within the entire Theatre of operation.

In another development, at about 9:30 am on 5 October 2019, troops of 114 Task Force Battalion, while on clearance operations, discovered 2 Improvised Explosive Devices (IEDs) planted by criminal insurgents along BITTA - YAMTEKE Road. The devices were successfully detonated by the Explosive Ordinance Disposal team, thus making the route safe again for commuters.

Similarly, in the South South, troops on Operation MESA raided the criminal hide-outs of some identified kidnap kingpins in Rivers State. The suspected kidnappers who have been terrorising innocent citizens met their waterloo when troops of 29 Battalion simultaneously raided the said criminal hideouts in OBIO/AKPOR, TAI and GOKANA LGAs of Rivers State on 2nd October 2019. The raid led to the arrest of 4 high profile criminals who have been on the Security Agencies' wanted list. Those arrested include DUMBARI Bro from B-DERE community, VICTOR DOKARA from K-DERE community, GBARACO KAVILOBA from LEWE and CONFIDENCE FRIDAY from BODO community. The suspects are currently undergoing interrogations and will soon be handed over to the appropriate Security Agency for prosecution.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lt Gen Tukur Yusuf Buratai wishes to once more appeal to the good citizens of our great country to continue to support the Nigerian Army's resolve to completely rid their communities of criminal elements by providing useful information to effectively tackle the myriad of the security challenges facing the nation.

You are kindly requested to disseminate above information to the general public for awareness.

Thank you for your usual cooperation.

On October 6, 1973, hoping to win back territory lost to Israel during the third Arab-Israeli war, in 1967, Egyptian and Syrian forces launched a coordinated attack against Israel on Yom Kippur, the holiest day in the Jewish calendar. Taking the Israeli Defense Forces by surprise, Egyptian troops swept deep into the Sinai Peninsula, while Syria struggled to throw occupying Israeli troops out of the Golan Heights. Israel counterattacked and recaptured the Golan Heights. A cease-fire went into effect on October 25, 1973.

1973 Yom Kippur War: Background
Israel’s stunning victory in the Six-Day War of 1967 left the Jewish nation in control of territory four times its previous size. Egypt lost the 23,500-square-mile Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip, Jordan lost the West Bank and East Jerusalem, and Syria lost the strategic Golan Heights. When Anwar el-Sadat (1918-81) became president of Egypt in 1970, he found himself leader of an economically troubled nation that could ill afford to continue its endless crusade against Israel. He wanted to make peace and thereby achieve stability and recovery of the Sinai, but after Israel’s 1967 victory it was unlikely that Israel’s peace terms would be favorable to Egypt. So Sadat conceived of a daring plan to attack Israel again, which, even if unsuccessful, might convince the Israelis that peace with Egypt was necessary.

Did you know? On October 6, 1981, Anwar Sadat was assassinated by Muslim extremists in Cairo while viewing a military parade commemorating the anniversary of Egypt’s crossing of the Suez Canal at the start of the Yom Kippur War.

In 1972, Sadat expelled 20,000 Soviet advisers from Egypt and opened new diplomatic channels with Washington, D.C., which, as Israel’s key ally, would be an essential mediator in any future peace talks. He formed a new alliance with Syria, and a concerted attack on Israel was planned.

Yom Kippur War: October 1973
When the fourth Arab-Israeli war began on October 6, 1973, many of Israel’s soldiers were away from their posts observing Yom Kippur (or Day of Atonement), and the Arab armies made impressive advances with their up-to-date Soviet weaponry. Iraqi forces soon joined the war, and Syria received support from Jordan. After several days, Israel was fully mobilized, and the Israel Defense Forces began beating back the Arab gains at a heavy cost to soldiers and equipment. A U.S. airlift of arms aided Israel’s cause, but President Richard Nixon (1913-94) delayed the emergency military aid for a week as a tacit signal of U.S. sympathy for Egypt. On October 25, an Egyptian-Israeli cease-fire was secured by the United Nations.

Yom Kippur War: Aftermath
Israel’s victory came at the cost of heavy casualties, and Israelis criticized the government’s lack of preparedness. In April 1974, the nation’s prime minister, Golda Meir (1898-1978), stepped down.

Thanks for the clarification.

Here are just 2 losing battles Hollywood won't be replaying anytime soon!

18. Operation Utah - On March 4, 1966, the 2nd battalion of the 7th Marines helicoptered into an area near Quang Ngai to investigate reports of an NVA regiment in the area. They found it dug into fortifications around Hill 50. Their attacked failed and the Marines fell back, but were surprised when the NVA counterattacked. The battalion was in trouble and more Marine units were flown in to join the battle. The enemy withdrew, but only after the Marines lost 98 dead, 278 wounded, with several aircraft destroyed.

https://www.g2mil.com/lost_vietnam.htm

Painful reading!

6
0. Ambush at Hoc Mon - In 1968, 92 American soldiers of C Company, 4th Battalion, 9th Infantry Regiment, 25th Division began a search-and-destroy mission near Saigon. They were looking for a Viet Cong force that had been firing rockets into their Tan Son Nhut Air Base. As they rushed along a road without flank security to catch up with their battalion, they ran into an ambush. Within eight minutes, 49 American soldiers were dead or dying, and 29 were wounded.

The Police should stop sending it's personnel to Gajiram. How do you fight with an AK47 against an enemy with AA Guns.

Those ISWAP guys used AA guns to almost bring down the police station there.

I'll try to get a pic when i pass through there this weekend.

Funny enough there is an Edo policeman i know there who usually carries a tear gas gun around. I almost weep anytime i see him with such a weapon in that axis.

NAF COMMISSIONS 111 OFFICERS OF NDA REGULAR COURSE 66 AS CDS CHARGES THEM TO REMAIN RESOLUTE, COMMITTED IN THE DISCHARGE OF MILITARY DUTIES

The newly commissioned Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officers of the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) Regular Course 66 have been charged to be diligent, committed and resolute in the discharge of their military duties and responsibilities to the Nation. The charge was given today, 7 October 2019, by the Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Abayomi Olonisakin, who represented the President, Commander-in-Chief (C-in-C) of the Armed Forces of Nigeria, Muhammadu Buhari, as the Special Guest of Honour (SGOH) at the commissioning/pipping and oath taking ceremony of the 111 graduating NAF cadets at the NAF Base, Kaduna.

Congratulating the NAF cadets, who were commissioned into the rank of Pilot Officer, the SGOH reminded them of the challenging but rewarding nature of the military career, noting that with the quality of training they had received, they would be able to cope with the demanding tasks ahead. While challenging them to brace up for the rigours of military service, the CDS reminded the young officers that they were being commissioned at a time when the country is tackling various security challenges such as terrorism, insurgency, kidnapping, armed banditry, communal clashes, cultism, militancy as well as herdsmen-farmers clashes. “Let me emphasize that the Armed Forces of Nigeria has recorded tremendous progress in degrading the capacity of Boko Haram terrorists thereby ensuring the territorial integrity of the Country. In this regard, the ambitions of our detractors to destabilize the Country have been dismantled, even though they continue to instill fear among the civil populace by attacking soft targets, carrying out hit and run attacks on isolated military formations and utilizing social media propaganda to disseminate fake news”, the CDS said.

Furthermore, the SGOH reminded the newly commissioned officers that, as young commanders, they would be entrusted with the responsibility of human and material resource management and would therefore be required to remain fair and mindful of their integrity. He equally urged them to imbibe and uphold the ethics of the military profession which include discipline, loyalty and hard work “You should also be firm and resolute in ensuring that the right things are done while eschewing what is wrong. You have to be frank in dealing with all situations with truthfulness and honesty and must work assiduously towards achieving organizational goals,” he added.

The SGOH commended the NAF for working assiduously to checkmate the security challenges facing the Nation. He noted with emphasis the efforts of NAF pilots who have continued to bomb centres of gravity and hideouts of insurgents and criminal elements. He stated that it was on record that over the past 4 years, the NAF has continued to reactivate grounded aircraft and induct new platforms while still adequately meeting the administrative and welfare needs of its personnel. More commendable, according to him, is the fact that the achievements were recorded with limited resources available to the NAF. While congratulating officers who distinguished themselves during the Course, the CDS charged award winners to see the awards as an incentive towards excellence and enhancing their confidence towards effective service delivery. For the rest, who did not win any award, the CDS encouraged them not to despair noting that they had fought a good fight having completed the Course with acceptable grades. Concerning the use of the social media for propanganda by criminal elements, the SGOH tasked the newly commissioned officers to acquire in-depth knowledge of how to apply social and digital media to win the war, alongside use of sophisticated weapons.

Speaking further, the CDS commended the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, for providing inspirational leadership for the NAF. The recent induction of new platforms and re-activation of long grounded aircraft, the CDS noted, is a confirmation of the CAS purposeful leadership. The SGOH equally commended the Air Officer Commanding Ground Training Command as well as the Commandant and staff of the Military Training Centre (MTC), imploring them to continually strive to devise ways of improving the quality of training. He added that the Federal Government would continue to give priority attention to the operational requirements and the welfare of the personnel of the Armed Forces of Nigeria.

Highlights of the commissioning ceremony included the presentation of NDA rings and conferment of Presidential Commission on the officers as well as the unveiling of ranks of the newly commissioned officers by their family members and friends. The SGOH also administered the Oath of Allegiance and presented Presidential Parchment of Commission to all the 111 new Pilot Officers, which included 7 female officers. Awards were also presented to officers who distinguished themselves on the course, with Flight Cadet (now Pilot Officer) Ja'afar Abdulkadir clinching the C-in-C’s award for emerging as overall best graduating cadet. Dignitaries at the event included the representatives of the Executive Governor of Kaduna Sate, Permanent Secretary Ministry of Defence, Chiefs of Army and Naval Staff as well as the Emir of Zaria. The Deputy Speaker Kaduna State House of Assembly, Emir of Kuje, the Commandant NDA and Commandants of other Tri-Service and NAF institutions, along with many serving and retired senior military officers, were also in attendance.

It is pertinent to note that under the current arrangement, NAF Regular cadets spend their final year of training at the MTC and are given basic specialist training in their various allotted Air Force Specialties. This is to prepare them for prompt deployment, upon commissioning, to serve in various capacities commensurate to the training they have received. As part of activities marking the graduation and commissioning ceremonies of the Air Force cadets, a Regimental Dinner Night was earlier held in their honour on 2 October 2019, where the CAS, represented by the Chief of Policy and Plans, Headquarters NAF, Air Vice Marshal Napoleon Bali, advised the graduating cadets to provide cost effective solutions to enhance self-reliance in their various areas of expertise. He also urged the graduating cadets to show good example both in conduct and character by abiding by NAF’s core values of ‘Integrity first’, ‘Service before Self’ and ‘Excellence in all we do’.
