Chapter 5 cont'd

"Ko ni da fu Baba Bukky, landlord oloriburuku wo....." I heard the Grandma cursing the moment I got home to begin my mid term break. The curses went on and on and I wondered what the landlord must have done again to anger the proud old witch. Yes oh, that woman behaves and acts like a witch and therefore she must be a witch. She was more or less the most advanced in age in the compound and always wanted to use that to her advantage. I disliked her because of that and never failed to show it to her.

..... She once called me to help her get her something from a place a bit far from our compound. I went against my principles of never going on errands for anyone because I felt she was an old woman and probably her last born and grand kid staying with her were unavailable to get whatever she wanted for her. I went alright, only for me to return to hear her gossiping about me and mocking me for not having a job; that all I did all day was to stay indoors, hiding from anyone like I was a fugitive or something. They all laughed at her jokes, everyone present in the kitchen did just that. Meanwhile, this was the same woman whose second son was a notorious thug around and was without a job too: washing rams, cars and anything that could be scrubbed and stealing and doing everything imaginable to survive. Every one of her daughters dropped out of school because they were all pregnant yet this woman talked the most in the compound and was always quick to mock someone else.

..... I gave her what I was asked to get, pretending like I didn't hear what she had said about me. She thanked me like a good person and I returned to my room. It took a few more days to request my help once again and I told her I couldn't do it. She pleaded that it wasn't too far and I told her to ask her daughter to go in my stead. She turned away in rage, murmuring curses at me and ever since she has taken it upon herself to mock or go at me at every opportunity; whispering awful things about me to the ears of the landlord so I was very surprised when I heard her cursing at her best friend in the compound. It was quite the sight. Mummy Michael had already joined in the circus giving ammunition for Grandma to fire.

..... I met the Benue woman just as I was about to open my room. That woman was stunning abeg. Her type of skin was the reason most men could kill for the fairskinned women and most ladies seek out creams and soaps to get them a skin like hers. Her skin was so smooth and bright. How on Earth did that man manage to get a woman so beautiful and hard-working like her and very loyal too. I have seen her walk from men who had turned a simple "good morning" to toasting process. Not once, not twice. Kai! Some men were just too lucky.

.... She had a frown on her face and her reply to my greeting was a bit cold and started murmuring in her dialect as she walked past me, heading to the back of the house. Her reply was quite unusual as she has never greeted me in such a manner before. I concluded that she was having a bad day and returned to my room. I pulled off my clothes to my underwear, wrapped my towel around me and carried my bucket of water to the bathroom, aiming to wash off the stress of the day but I dropped my bucket few metres from the bathroom as I was stunned from what I was seeing.

......"You sef you don see am abi? You don see wetin we don dey tell that useless landlord since but the useless man no hear, na only monkey tail e sabi." The Benue woman asked and just continued with her rants, barely giving me the space to say anything.

.... I couldn't blame her because I was boiling inside of me too. The second bathroom was without a door and wasn't tiled so most people hate taking their bath in there; I, in particular have never stepped foot in there. We have asked the old man to something about it but it fell on deaf ears. Now, the door to the only bathroom in the house has been pulled off its hinges completely. There was nothing to use as cover except I got something like a wrapper to use as a makeshift door. It's no wonder everyone was raining curses on the man as he obviously let it this happen to get another avenue to siphon money his tenants. A very useless landlord indeed.

..... I went inside to get a wrapper which made it possible for me to have my bath. This was a very useless compound, the faster I left, the better for me. The curses continued even the men joined in the cursing the landlord because they couldn't find him to make any complaints to when they returned from work late in the night. We all went to bed in anger and I woke up the next day to find most of the occupants had left for work. I did my usual chores, had my quiet time and headed to the bathroom to have my bath. Someone was in there, but was covering the open space of the bathroom with the door but only half of the door could be used with the other half used as support for the broken door to stand. The remaining space was covered with the towel of the person in there. It was smart but the footing of the door didn't look even and so the door was unbalanced on the ground and could fall at anytime.

.....I was in the middle of thinking about how I was going to control those kids when the I heard the crash of the door. I naturally turned to look and the beautiful sight of Mummy Michael's body was staring at me. Even with soap all over her body, the deep indigo of her marvelous skin shone. I have never been attracted to a dark skin woman before but even I couldn't take my eyes off this one. Her breasts were round and teardrop in shape, standing gallantly on her chest, her stomach was more or less flat with a small pouch below it, probably due to the fact that she had given birth twice or more than that, who knows. I couldn't see her private part because she was covering it with one of her hands and it was then that my senses returned and I quickly picked up the door and positioned it back as best as I could at least until she finished bathing. Her towel was short and couldn't cover the entire breadth of the bathroom entrance, so she used the door to compensate for that but she didn't expect the door to fall.

...... She thanked me in English but it was clear that she was completely embarrassed and I wouldn't be surprised that her murmurings were curses aimed at the landlord. My God! She was so damn sexy, my organ had already enlarged so much at this point but reduced a bit as my conscience kept scolding for leering at another man's wife. And that was the problem. This woman was married which was enough to kill any sexual desires of her in me and if that wasn't enough, I didn't like her one bit. What on earth was going on with me? Oh God, this was Ellen and Sophia all over again. I lamented.

Chapter 6

...."We can all see that the door has been damaged." My landlord began in perfect English. He can do so if he actually wants to as he is one of the few that can communicate in the queen's tongue in that compound. I and a few others make up the list. Baba Mary, Baba Titi and the Benue man, together with the guy that owns the viewing centre next door make up the list and dear Ay and her new man.

....Baba Mary has two daughters one of them being the name attached to his title and the other is Ayo, both in secondary school. Baba Titi who is the fellow drunkard that always followd the landlord from joint to joint has three kids; one named Titi who stays on her own and the other two Monday and Nike, who stay with their Dad. Baba Titi was one of the few single Dads in the compound, the other one was the landlord himself, although that one has nobody currently living with him. Baba Titi became single after he chased his wife out of his apartment for not only cheating on him but bringing the result of the extra-marital affair to his home. I was told it wasn't funny one bit.

..... The said woman still comes to see her other kids occasionally but was said to be living from hand to mouth and then one wonders why anyone would want to cheat in the first place knowing that the man you are cheating with won't take care of you. Mama Titi was however endowed at the back, typical of women from the south west and I could certainly see the appeal but she wasn't the smartest woman around from the few times I had heard her speak. She was always up causing trouble, never up to any good.

.....Baba Titi and his landlord have been caught more than once at Z-place where they let out their sexual urges or more correctly, where Baba Bukky, the landlord squanders his rent money. Don't ask me what I was looking for around there but it wasn't a sight to see whenever his estranged wife comes around for money and sees him drinking with no money to give her. It was always fun, that one.

.... The room facing me was occupied by a single mother whom I have never been privileged to meet her husband but her three kids were in school. Two little boys and one girl who was close to thirteen. The woman, mummy Ore looked too matured to have just those kids now, there was more to her story, surely. I never had issues with her although we never really got along because I just couldn't speak the language even though I understood it to a large extent.

.... The next single mother was a woman in her early thirties who seemingly wanted a man at all costs and ended up getting pregnant for a modern native doctor. The man stayed with her for a while before leaving hurriedly one morning with his things in a nylon bag. He was never seen again and it took the woman, Ay, few weeks to get another man who was far more matured than the previous one. But this man who most certainly had a family elsewhere and a bus for his transport business stayed with her and be a father to her kid. I just couldn't understand how a very attractive woman like her and one who could communicate in English excellently well would decide to end up with men at the bottom of the spectrum. It just beats my imagination.

....The next single mother was grandma and she became single only recently after her husband died. The fifth death in the compound in four years as I was told, still born babies inclusive. She has loosen up a bit too much in my opinion since her husband's death which was no surprise as there was one else old enough in the compound to speak sense into her anymore.

..... Baby Mary, Baba Sadiq who was the match centre owner with one child to his name, Daddy Michael and of course Iyawo, referring to the Benue woman made up the married folks in the compound. The two drunkards were the single fathers, while three women were single mothers. I counted Ay as a single mother because she wasn't married to the man staying with her even if she wants people to believe otherwise. The last other person apart from me was another single guy who was barely ever around. He disappears for weeks, only to return for a while to pay his bills and vanishes again. He was the target of Ay at a point in time but that didn't work out. I am sure the guy just used her and dumbed her.

..... Nine of us who represented nine rooms were out there in the little space between the kitchen and the corridor, just outside the boys quarters to listen to the landlord's take on the broken door.

...."So, we will pay #500 each to repair the door." The landlord concluded.

...."Oga landlord, repair or build another one?" The Benue man asked. The landlord gave him a deadly stare before he answered.

..."Build."

..."How many doors, because #5000 is too much to fix one door." The Benue man continued.

...."Na true you talk my brother." Baba Titi remarked to my surprise and that of the landlord too.

...."Na one door I wan repair but....." The landlord tried to explain but was cut off by Baba Titi...

...."#5000 for one door, kilode na. That's too much. I will only pay #250 pere." He stated and everyone present agreed with him. If looks could kill, the Benue man would have dead by now. The landlord reluctantly agreed but then Baba Mary had something to say.

...."I will like to suggest that somebody should be the keeper of the money not the landlord because he has a bad history of spending money that has been given to him for work here."

...."Daddy Mary, O ma da fu yin ( Baba Mary, it will be well with you.)" Daddy Michael announced. Baba Mary was right in what he said because I was certain that the useless landlord would surely use the money for his own use that's If at all he fix the door. It won't be the first time we will contribute for something and the money would enter voicemail. The man was an expert in that. It was very important that we get this done before officials from the council comes and demand something that we couldn't afford because our bathrooms had no doors.

....We all agreed to give the money to Baba Mary after which the landlord left in anger, barely before the meeting ended. His tenants were getting wiser, Daddy Michael made a slight joke about that and we all laughed to that as we headed for our rooms. I decided to fetch water and headed for the back to get my kegs. Mummy Michael was fetching water and was wearing tight leggings with a very short shirt. She was stunning that morning. She greeted me first, doing that smiling for the first time since ages now. She also used that opportunity to thank me for the previous day event. I nodded and she walked past, heading towards Mama Omolabi's base, rolling that waist of hers. I quickly looked away and asked God for Grace to overcome because I knew myself well. Built up lust wasn't good for me.

..... That day was going fine for me: I had negotiated 45k between the two parents that took my contacts for home lesson services with their kids and now, Mummy Michael was smiling at me. But my mind was on the tall teacher in my school, she was feasible compared to this woman tempting me. God will help me.

Chapter 6

...... The rush after midterm was something I had always despised and I wasn't suprised that it was relatively the same here in this new school. I hated covering for making up for the sixth and seventh week's work on the eighth week because it was just overload on the poor kids and to make matters worse here, I do not rate these kids at all. I was just informed that my predecessor had typed the examination questions for the term before she left which meant that I had no clues on what had been set for the kids to do in few weeks time. I asked for a copy of the questions but the foolish, overzealous woman wrapper of a head teacher looked at me like I was a thief or something for demanding that, stating that my performance as a teacher would be judged by how well the kids performed in their exams.

,.....I was pissed off at this reply and wanted to hit his damn face there. I was employed half way into the second term and based on their notes and performances in their continuous assessments and records on their report sheets clearly stated that the kids were poorly taught. How was I going to suddenly teach them first term work and second term work in about 4 weeks that included revision also before their exams are conducted? The man just couldn't be serious. I scratched my head as I got back into the classroom wondering how I was going to do this. I had to get a sample of their previous year 3 examination, just to check through and confirm a few suspicions and then get myself ready to prepare for the unattainable.

....... I stayed behind and didn't go downstairs for assembly as I combed through the shelf in the class, looking for past examination questions. I found a few and checked through and to my horror, I discovered that questions were even brought all the way from year 1. How on Earth will kids remember questions from two years ago for Christ sake? It was no wonder they were failing spectacularly when what the kids have prepared for are not brought out but perhaps what they have prolly forgotten and didn't think to read at all.

..... The kids were yet to study their second term materials yet they were expected to study not just year 2 but year 1's work? The management here are a joke, I concluded and knowing that pempemrepe Mr. Daniels, he would have edited the questions since he was the one reviewing the questions for the primary section. Enormous work that will at the end of the day yield nothing and yet the mumu was bragging about the work ethic the school required of its workers and his delusional claims of standard of learning here when it was quite clear all that was to fool gullible parents. There was certainly no standard as far as I was concerned, just a team of foolish people who clearly didn't understand that it was the simple process of laying a block beside another that raised up a house not how expensive the materials required for construction was in the first place. It's no wonder the kids here don't know anything because the work load was too much for them.

....... I was pissed and when the kids saw the expression on my face, no one told them to compose themselves well. They kept quiet immediately and got ready for class especially since I didn't give any reply to their greetings. My first challenge was money and I surely hoped that we were paid today, it was already the first week of another month. I had bills to pay but more importantly, the kids in front of me was my major challenge. If anything I want to teach is to stick at all, I will have to know the kind of learners they are but first I needed to work on their handwritings. It was bad for a section of the class and completely horrendous for a few. Bad handwritings meant that there would be no more readings after today's class.

..... I shocked the kids when I stated that we would be using the first period which was meant to be for Mathematics for handwriting. Naturally, they protested but I silenced them by asking a few affected ones to read what was in front of them in their own notes. They struggled and the protests died there.

..... It was a slow process teaching the affected ones how to write properly and the likes of Kelvin how to how their pencils properly. It was write and clean, write and clean and before I knew it, forty minutes was over and the first period was gone. I had succeeded for the most part but it was a continuous process that had to be tempered with incentives. From the first day I came in here, I knew the kids loved the playground because they always talked about it everyday and daydreamed about how they were going to set up their numerous games but I had terrible news for them that morning. I announced that anyone who desires to be in the playground from that day must do their work to my utmost satisfaction. They obviously didn't like that but didn't protest this time.

.... I moved to teaching mathematics the next period, using that as an opportunity to ascertain the kind of learners they were. I asked a few questions about the last topic we did in maths and only about four answered to my satisfaction which meant that they were audio learners. Then I specifically asked for diagrams since we did measuration, although it took a while but answers kept pouring in and it was proved as I went through the diagrams they had drawn and I came to the conclusion that a lot of them were audio - visual learners, leaning on the visual more than the audio which meant that no more abstract teachings for me if I wanted majority of the kids to learn anything at all. I did a quick teaching that morning and while I might not have achieved my objectives, especially since we were quite behind if I was following the terms work but I decided that I wouldn't. I had my own plans. Monday was going fine and this week was starting to look promising.

.... Thanks for the likes and comments, more of them please..... grin
.... We are slowing getting to the Koko of the story. Will Alex fall prey to what most men have always fallen into? We shall see soon....

Chapter 6 cont'd

...... I fulfilled my promise and didn't let anyone whose work I wasn't satisfied with go to the playground. Oh boy, it pained the ones left behind when the others came up later after the break and told of how much they thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Kelvin who was one of those left behind was already crying. Tolu the lazy boy and Ethan with one of worst handwriting I had ever seen were the unfortunate ones who stayed back in class. Sammy was not in school that day. I made sure that they had at least completed their notes to an extent before the next teacher came into the class. I continued with my approach of using instructive materials to teach the kids, thinking out of the box most times especially since the school didn't provide enough materials that could aid teaching for the instructors.

... Basic science class was far more fun because the kids would go outside to touch the plants and even uproot roots to look for some of the animals deep in the soil. We couldn't find earthworm that day to their outmost disappointment because the sun was really hot that afternoon and of course such creatures were hardly ever seen during such times.

...."Mr. Solomon, please, what is this?" Fatima, one of the tallest pupil in the class asked me. She was quite the talkative too.

...."Oh, that's the shell of the Avocado fruit."
I explained which only confused her and her classmates even more.

...."Avocado? What's that?" A lot of them asked and then it nearly turned into a fight of let me see and what of you. I rolled my eyes and took the empty fruit from them and promised them that I would get the fruit for them soon. That seemed to calm them and we returned back to the classroom. Things went well at least till the end of the day. My phone vibrated and It was a notification that we have paid. I couldn't be more glad and started working on buying some basic things. I needed toothpaste, and basic toiletries. Half gallon of kerosene at least, two bottles of palm oil and groundnut oil; one new shirt and trouser and a new shoe at least plus paying one month of my house rent or perhaps I should just forget about it until the end of the current month where I would have enough from my salary and home lesson too. I couldn't be empty since it wasn't my full salary.

..... The time was few minutes to four and my private lesson schedule should see be at the home of my pupil at 5pm. I finally opened up my laptop for the first time that day. Christ! Handling those kids was surely something else. I powered it up to see if I could still work on my lesson notes a bit before heading out when I realized that the system was connected to a network.

..... Shitt, oh boy eee!!! I screamed within me. I tried it and opened a page and it went very smoothly. So many things were coming in my mind. Both good and evil. I checked one of the sites that had those full HD videos of my favorite adult stars with a beating heart and then I realized that there wasn't a firewall meaning that our internet activity wasn't monitored. To think of it, I have always seen our madam with a white object that looked like a modem. I thought it was her personal stuff but didn't know it was for the school too. Oh boy, so that unlimited internet stuff she was talking about that day was actually her own. Waoh, waoh, waoh.

.... I searched for Lela, and I saw new videos of her and quickly downloaded the stuff. (Not telling you guys the site and app..bad children.... grin). The speed was quite decent, hovering between 500 - 800 kilobytes per second. It was a big file of about 1.6gig but I waited with a beating heart until it downloaded and quickly moved it to my phone. Deleting and clearing my history as well as the download.

.... Jesus, my heart was beating loudly even after I had left the school on my way to start my home lesson. Osanobua! You don do my own. I was excited and scared at the same time. What does free internet mean for me now especially since I didn't want to return to my addiction but it wasn't something I could just ignore but I had to be careful though. It was a risk but far lower especially since I was using an app that looked completely innocent especially for those who know their around stuff but I could just do it on my phone and use the laptop to download other things. I just had to find out the password for the WiFi connection and I didn't think it would be that difficult. As I walked towards my pupil home which was in the estate by the way, I asked myself which was the greater evil; Wanking or Fornication/ Adultery?

Chapter 7

...... "Sex isn't plug and play folks, don't be deceived......" Were the words I heard immediately I was allowed into the house by the maid. She asked me to sit and wait for her madam in the Yoruba language. I was shocked at first when I saw the house and assumed that it was a rented apartment, a duplex by the way but it was too big and wide to be a single building of just that. I would surely get to the root of that later but my God, the house was majestic. I couldn't believe that this kid lives in this kind of home, no wonder he was so lazy.

..... The living room was divided into segments or perhaps sections, seeing that where I was seated was the first room one enters when entering the house and of course was separated from the rest of the living room by a door. The maid had changed the channel to super sports bliz after welcoming me so I couldn't tell the channel those words were aired from but they were very powerful and occupy my thoughts but that didn't stay for long because Tolu soon burst into the room, nearly running into me. He was strangely excited and I never thought he liked me this much with the way he hugged my legs.

.... Grandma soon joined as she scolded her grandson for running off the way he did, as he could have slipped on the beautiful tiles. I greeted Grandma and quickly noticed that she wasn't fluent in the Queen's tongue so I did my best to converse with her in Yoruba. The conversation wasn't flowing because I wasn't a good a speaker of the language, which was quite intentional but I got most of what she was trying to tell me or perhaps what his mother had directed her to tell me.

.... Apparently, Tolu wasn't very good in maths and had issues remembering anything that had to do with Mathematics and calculations. Although, I remember him being able to recount the movies he has watched flawlessly so he didn't have memory issues. It certainly had to do with his interests and how he was taught. I promised that I would do my best but I had to be given free reign on how best to handle him. She frowned a little after that but I assured her that I knew her Grandson's condition and shouldn't be spanked. She relaxed afterwards and spent the next ten minutes telling me stories about how much the boy has suffered, blah, blah, like that was my problem currently.

.... She left soon and I asked Tolu if they had any boards. He replied in the affirmative and I decided to set camp outside so we could be a bit more free to do learning and minimise distractions from the TV and what of you. I asked him about school that day, just to get him in the mood to learn and he said that it wasn't fun because he couldn't use the playground. I told him that he could once he gets better with his handwriting. That said, we started work.

..... I began with skip counting from 2 and we stopped at the 6 times table that day. It was a boring cycle with that skip counting but was highly recommended because that was the foundation of mathematics. After which I explained what I had taught them in class that day in mathematics and to my joy, he recounted the lesson really well. I then watched him do his other assignments guiding where absolutely necessary before taking my leave. I was offered dinner but I humbly refused, lying that I was filled already. Tolu walked me to his gate and waved goodbye. The lesson had started well, tomorrow will see at another estate not far from my place.

.... My mind drifted back to those words that sex wasn't plug and play as a lot of naive first timers assumed it to be. Love, marriage or whatever reason one indulges in it will not save anyone from the hazards of it if one wasn't looking out for himself. I knew for certain that one thing that scared the shitt out of me was sexually transmitted diseases. After watching Baba Titi openly weeping just so that he could take a piss was enough to kill sexual encounters with a stranger but what makes a stranger different from a loved one was the emotional bond.

.... Unfortunately, that bond doesn't protect against infections so my safety rests on my initiative and not any bond. After all, it is said that even your boo had a boo, perhaps the case with a lot of so called married folks; certainly the case of Daddy Michael and who knows the wife too. Although I wonder where I am in all of this? The fall guy or the rebound! What do I want the most? A relationship or a lover? My body was going to explode at some point and I wanted it to with someone I could trust. So who could I trust with the safety of my body; a single woman or a so called married one?

.... Jesus, I was already contemplating sex outside marriage. What was wrong with me? I shook the evil thoughts off my head. I conquered against Ellen and my step mom. I will conquer this too. Although, I was still with my Dad when those temptations came about but now it was different. I lived alone and that changed things completely.
