This has been a very stimulating topic. My biggest take away from this is that the modern day Yorubas are not originally one people but were foistered together by inter-tribal wars and slave trade. Race and tribe remain social constructs ever evolving and none are superior to the other. I'm sure if everyone does DNA testing, we will all find so many different races in our ancestry.

For all those arguing that the name could not have been coined by the Hausa, you are forgetting that there were interactions between both people long before the advent of Islam. It's a pity that there was no written documentation prior to the 15th century but it's not only in Africa that colonialism has muddied our histories. The original inhabitants of America and several countries of the world share the same fate.

So what, if the name was given in ridicule? The most important thing is what it represents today. It would be nice if the Yoruba could shake away the stigma of being deceitful (many still are today) and become a people of integrity and prosperity. That would be a great story to tell.

People should not just come online and start talking without verifying things for themselves. FFK is saying the truth.

Igbos despite been decentralized and autonomous historically have words like Igbonacho, Igbogadi, Odenigbo etc in Igbo lexicon.

But there is nowhere in yoruba prehistoric literature where the word 'yoruba' ever existed before their contact with the hausa. No name, no house, no land, no family bear the word 'yoruba'. Even Fulanis who conquered and colonized hausas bear Danfulani.

Food for thought.

Ffk may have a point

Lols. You are the one suffering from debilitating ignorance. FFK is correct.

The name yari bah or yaribansa was used by the hausa/Fulanis to refer to the tribe in the southwest in ancient times. The ancient Yorubas rejected the name, but it was foisted on the tribe after the defeat of the Oyo empire following Kiriji War and infiltration by Western culture via Samuel Ajayi Crowther.

In fact, the Egbas resisted that name the longest; the Egbas were said to be the last to accept the name.

The first newspaper printed in Yoruba was in 1859 and it was titled: "Ìwé Ìròyìn fùn ará Ègbá àti Yorùba." This indicates that the Egbas were among the last people to reject that name.

Yoruba is a negative appellation forced on our tribe by foreigners (hausa/fulani) and it means "deceitful"
What is this one saying? Did you not see the print I uploaded on front page that predates the 1858 with the Yoruba tag already used for the Yoruba people decades before 1858.

At least, you aren't denying that you are suffering from ignorance by abusing FFK. Looks like you are more concerned about his tribal/political affiliations than the verity of his utterances, which is a sign of grand stupidity.

Yoruba is a negative appellation forced on our tribe by foreigners. You can't deny that.

If you say somebody is deceitful or unreliable, you should give instances not just mouthing whatt you cannot prove.

If Yoruba are deceitful, let us read about their deceit now or cover your face in shame.

These are verified Igbo betrayals to Yoruba,South,North and the whole Nigeria...
Igbos betrayals..

1.Azikiwe betrayed the South to give power to the North.

2.Igbos later backstabbed the North and South by killing their leaders.

3.Aguiyi Ironsi betrayed Nigeria by foisting Unitary System of govt on the populace with decree 34.

4.Igbos betrayed Nigeria by supporting Abacha through the 1millon people march.

5.Igbos betrayed the South by always voting for the North.

6.Igbos betrayed Yorubas by voting for Tofa, another Northerner....

The list goes on...

Now list your cooked up Yoruba betrayals and compare.
