From one warzone to another: US troops leaving Syria were promised to return home, but are instead redirected to Iraq. And nobody seems to know what exactly is going to happen next.

Earlier this month, Trump claimed that it is “time to bring our soldiers back home”. But Defense Secretary Mark Esper said that the US troops that are currently withdrawing from northern Syria will be redirected to western Iraq to fight the Islamic state, rather than be sent home. According to Esper, the possibility of cross-border missions into Syria from Iraq isn’t off the table either.

However, after Esper’s announcement, Iraqi military responded by saying that the American troops can only use its territory for transit and are not welcome to stay in the region. This statement further jeopardizes the vision of what will actually happen to the troops after their withdrawal from Syria.

Later on, Esper backtracked on his original statement and said that the positioning of American troops in Iraq would indeed be temporary. Supposedly, from there they will make preparations to go home. He didn't however, specify, how long these 'prepartions' would take. “The aim isn’t to stay in Iraq interminably, the aim is to pull our soldiers out and eventually get them back home,” the defense secretary said.
