When you’re thinking of investing, also think of specify the duration.

How long can you leave the money for?

How much risk can you bear on the funds?

Hi everyone,

I'm kinda new to this investment thing and trying to understand TBills and MMF.

If someone has 2m to invest, which would be the best considering the Interest rate. TBills or MMF.

Please the Gurus in the house I await your response.
Thanks

Very low risk, duration of 1year at least.

Please each time I check returns on treasury bills, I see different levels for 91, 182 and 364 days. What's the major difference between these changes. From my knowledge, why invest for one year when I could get similar percentage in 91 days? Or are the 91 and 182 days percentages a division of what's obtainable annually? I need answers please. Thanks.

the last sentence is the answer to your question.
If the rate is 10% and you decided to invest for 91days which is three months, the profit will be divided by 4 and that's what your return will be

More facts are beginning to emerge for the reason behind CBN banned on OMO for Nigerians.
Reports has it that out of the $40billion external reserve, $17b belongs to foreign investors. Recall topmost on Emefiele's STI is keeping the exchange rate at 360 (avoid devaluation). Hence CBN want those that can bring in the $. And only allow banks in case foreign investors decide to sell at secondary mkt.
The effect of this is that corporate bodies and wealthy individuals will be forced to do TBill which will be offered at lower rates
What do you mean by lower rates

How are Treasury Bills different from OMO?

T-Bills and OMO (Open Market Operation) are similar and work almost the same way. Whilst T-Bills are issued to finance government budget deficit, OMOs are issued by the CBN for monetary policy management i.e. to control the volume of money in circulation. OMOs are also discount instruments in that you get your interest upfront but they can also be bought in the primary and secondary market. Depending on the objective and aggressiveness of the CBN per time, it might be possible to get higher rate on OMOs than T-Bills. OMO is also exempted from taxes. OMOs are issued at irregular intervals.

I went to Stanbic this morning and I was told that there's no more secondary market. I tried to inquire, I was told that it's from CBN. that one can only place order for primary market only for now.
The lady at First Bank also told me something similar, she said there are a lot of rules guiding it now.

Good day house.

I am an ardent follower of this thread and shouldn't be asking this question. I've been using First Bank for TBILLS mostly in secondary market.

First Bank is having issues with TBILLS so I decided to try GTBank however, I invested in primary market yesterday but till now I haven't been debited.

I don't know if I should call my account officer or if that's what is obtainable for GT customers.

You don't have to call them, your account will be debited tomorrow with the exemption of your interest. That is how GTB works.

Auction is Wednesday, settlement should be from Thursday. They only accepted your request early to submit them to their head office in time for bidding on Wednesday. I believe you will be debited if their bid go through.

It's actually general but I was livid with them on my last visit.

I meet the lady to tell me the rates and tenure let me decide what to do. She told me the new procedure and I meet the operation manager that checked if I had any loan.

After the long process and waiting they confirmed me only for me to meet the lady and she said secondary and primary market is unavailable.

I just moved my money to Gtb immediately.

This is why I mentioned earlier that diversifying investment is the best. Now with the non-availability of secondary market, I have to leave my money in my account for another 80 days so I can mop up. No one knows when we are going to wake up from this CBN adjustment. It might even get worse.

You could try mopping up with mutual funds. A bit more returns than leaving funds in your bank account i believe?

This means each time we bid for the primaries, verification of back logged loans will ensue..... Time wasters

So we have to be gracing the bank 2-3 days before auction.

If you still wish to enjoy secondary market, you can do that by switching to investment houses instead of banks. Like someone explained here earlier, it's CBN's OMO that was stopped and not TB.

This new CBN policy dey sweet banks for body for now. They just dey do shakara because even before now na fixed deposit they want make you do but their brains go reset once better money begin leave dey head to Investment houses.

Hi guys.

Please I need some clarification on this issue.

Does cancellation fee apply the same across all banks?

A friend invested 2m with zenith bank a couple of weeks back and wants to cancel owing to some issues.

He hasn’t touched his upfront interest.

Can some clarify me on the expected penalty to this case?

Thanks

Why won't the money be safe? It's either it goes or it remains in ones account. There's really nothing to panic about.

Definitely. Mmf is likely my next point of call if this TB issue persist. The good thing is the yield for most of them is almost as high (if not higher) than TB sef.
