Ghana - Nigeria custom to hold joint meeting

""The meeting is expected to help the two countries set out modalities on how Ghanaian traders may easily cross the Nigerian-Benin border with their goods.

According to the Deputy Minister-in-charge of Trade and Industry, Mr Carlos Kingsley Ahenkorah, an announcement will be made after the meeting on Monday to that effect.

The Deputy Minister was hopeful the meeting would yield positive results considering the outcomes of all the meetings held between the two countries.

The Deputy Minister stated that following meetings with the Commissioner of Customs and the Minister of Foreign affairs of Nigeria last Wednesday, a Ghana Export Promotion Authority (GEPA) truck which was conveying products from Ghana to Nigeria for an exhibition was allowed into that country after several days of staying behind the Nigerian border.

This, the Minister said was a good sign and he was very optimistic the meeting on Monday would yield the needed results.

Speaking on Citi TV‘s The Big Issue, the Deputy Minister said the modalities would make it easier for both Ghanaian and Nigerian trucks to cross the border and improve transparency for Nigerian authorities.

According to him, the two sovereign states are hoping to among other things arrive at a decision that would make authorities know the quantity and type of products en route to each other’s country before the goods arrive.

“When we got to the commissioner of customs, the customs people who went with us also had a very hearty discussion with him and they were all on one side saying that it is important that they have a customs to customs cooperation where they will exchange information even about goods that are about leaving Ghana to Nigeria, so they can do same for us. That way they know what is coming into their country”.

“You heard me say that we are going to create a special window for these Ghana trucks to be able to move in, and the Foreign affairs Minister of Nigeria promised to do this with Ghana and to have that exchange. So the Commissioner of Customs for Ghana and that of Nigeria are supposed to sit down and come up with modalities on Monday."

"He went further to promise that on Monday we are having a crunch meeting and after that meeting, they are going to come out with a brilliant announcement and so we should all open our ears,” Mr Ahenkorah added.

Background

Nigeria closed its frontiers in what it says is to stop the smuggling of products from its neighbouring West African countries into Nigeria.

The action taken by Nigeria was to express its displeasure at the attitude of the Beninese authorities in order to elicit their cooperation.

The closure of the borders which started in August 2019 was expected to be in force for twenty-eight (28) days, however, it looks like the issues remain unresolved thus the continuous closure.

Many trucks have been stranded at the Seme border for several weeks now"".
Your bolded said goods going for exhibition and not for the markets, does that sound like a trade corridor that your president and ministers have been crying and begging for?

Some people like illegality. If you wish to continue in business, import your materials through the proper channels.

Which right channels? People pay up to 700 - 900 thousand Naira for clearance on a vehicle they paid about 800k to buy and ship down? some goods attract demurrage.

Shipping also doesn't make sense for goods tat are sourced in countries that are close to our land borders.

The product am bringing from Mali is from Mali.
The hides is from camels skin, I go to Mali and join them in roasting it, with fire and then later with the high intensity sun found in the area, its not something you just come and buy ready made , if not they will sell rubbish to you, as you won't get the desired quality, so to a large extent, I am involved in the processing of those hides and skin.

This is also a raw materials for other finished goods in Nigeria that are exported, that's the irony of the whole thing.

This policy is a poor policy, it is not good for the economy of the nation.

I feel your pain brother.. lets pray they rethink the idea or at least streamline it to rice ban alone

The timing of the border closure is bad, but the idea is good. Those products you are importing from Mali are they made in Mali? Probably a foreign company produces it in Mali with Nigeria market as mail target. That's the issue the gorverment is trying to solve. Let the companies come and Establish in Nigeria and create jobs for our people.

Why will they come and start any company here... a country where hordes of other companies are running away? the roads are bad, consistent power is almost non-existent, clearing your goods cost almost the cost of purchase and shipping? It'd be better the government fixes these ills at first. if despite the enabling environment, they still refuse to site their production facilities here, then it becomes a matter of economic sabotage and should be fought to a standstill.

My main fear is that three to four years is too short a time for anyone to start a company and expect to attain profitability. Whoever risks it to borrow and begin local production of these same banned goods now, the same person may not find the environment so encouraging after this current dispensation ends.

The truth is now coming out ..By the the time this is over Nigeria would have lost over 8 trillion Naira because shortsighted Buhari want local farmers to sell 500 thousand bags of rice Worth a paltry 6 billion reminiscent of how the same Buhari made the oil industry lose over 80 billion dollars because Buhari wanted to recover a paltry 35 million dollars from Tompolo ..Buhari is visionless and so myopic that anybody expecting positive results from him is like someone expecting Keke Napep to win a Formula one race .

Ghana has been exhibiting in Nigeria for years yet we shut our borders.

After exhibiting and interested in exporting to Nigeria, our seaports and airports are available, land borders remain shut for now.

I once said that the closure of these borders is not a properly thought idea, but some ignorant entities were ranting up and down.

Rice is not the only commodity that passes through a border. There are a lot of genuine business that passes through the land border.

If you are importing or exporting to some of the west African countries, it's easier and more cost effective to use the land boarders than the sea port.

Imagine a man exporting textiles to Ghana from Kano, how possibly will he do that through the sea port in APAPA?

I am totally against rice smuggling but the government should have come up with smarter ideas to deal with this issue, and not shutting down the whole boarder.

Presently I have about two trailers of hides and skin from Mali parked at the boarder incurring bills, with high possibility of spoiling within the shortest period of time because of its present condition.

How do I import from Mali to Nigeria through the seaport?

It is only those that does not understand what happens at the land boarders that are jumping up and down.

Once again I reiterate my stance against smuggling rice through the boarders, but we have to be more tactical in handling certain issues as regards to our economy.

This boarder issue in Nigeria is like a fly perching on a man's scrotal sack, you have to apply wisdom in dealing with it, if not you may end up hurting yourself terribly bad if you hit it with great force.

I can't agree any less. Cutting off the head to cure a headache is massive stupidity. The FG should come up with smarter ways to resolve this issue.

If other West African countries team up against Nigeria economically, Nigeria will suffer... There are other ways of dealing with smugglers and Boko haram.

Just improve security on our borders that all

They should tell me how possible is it that there is a 3trillion industry somewhere in Nigeria that we are not aware of.

They first claimed the border in north is flourishing, while only the southern borders are closed in order to pitch the south against the north.

As soon as they realized that is likely not to work, they are now claiming the once flourishing border in the north is all of a sudden locked up.

As a result, some imaginary business men are at the risk of losing billions of imaginary dollars
You mean you're not aware of textiles you see in Yaba, balogun, aswani, katangua etc. Are you sure you're in Nigeria?
