He should get a lawyer. This high handedness by those in power must stop. Is it a crime to write an open letter? Reply him with facts and not expel.
I wonder what type of students our universities are producing or want to produce. Zombies? Dogmatic graduates? Olodos? The EFCC and ICPC need to visit the VC and senate members

Of course the expulsion sounds a bit harsh but the fact is that admission and studentship of a student at any university is at the pleasure of the University Senate.

If you were involved in ALUTA in your university days, you agree with me that most university critics who got elected into SUG ended up being worse than the university administration they criticized in service delivery.

However, one should take consolation that Michael Ifemosu has his hero Yele Sowore as source of inspiration to survive this expulsion and still achieve his dreams. This is certainly a temporary setback.
He would have used a proxy or an alias to write the epistle rather than this.

I don't think nigerians know what freedom of speech means.Freedom of speech does not mean making unguarded and careless statement.even in advance countries, you can be sued if you make very grievous or spread false news about somebody.i think the first thing any university does in such a case is to invite him to a disciplinary committee and may be required to prove all his allegations.i think the only part wrong in his letter was his insult on the professors.most people on nairaland can't take insult from anybody and most don't see it as as freedom of speech for anybody to write derogatory statement about a tribe or an abuse at oneself.i think we nigerians sometime are hypocrite.we need to know how to pass information without being rude and we need to be sure of everything we write.if the guy has proof , then let him go to court to challenge the Senate. By the way, there is a student union in the school.

The question is: Have the University management deemed it fit to listen and sought for solution concerning the issues raised? Our leaders don't understand consultations and engagement in resolving issues...what can catch their attention is "confrontation"...

No wonder Nigerians can’t protest bad governance, if students can be expelled from voicing opinions.

That useless VC should be sacked.
To me all what he said wasn’t bad at all,all the bad leaders now want to rule us and,we will just follow them as if we are their Children and can’t speak up our mind, weather good or bad,we just quiet and suffer in pains.he can still do better in future that’s not the end.

zainam:
A 200-Level student of the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB), Michael Adewale Ifemosu, has been expelled by the university for allegedly posting an open letter on his Facebook page to the Vice Chancellor, Prof Kolawole Salako.

FUNAAB said Ifemosu was expelled because he posted an open letter on the internet to the Vice Chancellor, in which he was said to have raised what it called allegations and misrepresentation of fact about the university.

Ifemosu, with Matric No. 20016/1186, was said to have posted the letter on Facebook in July 2019.

DAILY POST learnt that Ifemosu is the Convener, Youth In Good Governance Initiative (YIGGI), and Ogun State Secretary for African Action Congress (AAC) – the political party under which Omoyele Sowore contested as the 2019 presidential candidate.

In the said open letter, Ifemosu talked about the alleged poor transportation system of the institution, as well as the way students were reportedly being harassed by the police.

He accused the management of “lackadaisical attitude and unprofessional management decisions” which he said was causing calamitous implosion in FUNAAB.

His words, “Students lectures starts 9am and it is no more news that Funaabites queue, fight, and struggle to attend classes and also leave the school premises, however The Vice chancellor and the entire University Management team is seen with one or two official car(s); this makes transportation easier for them while student remain stranded and languishing in an unending tragedy.

“The Funaab Bureau of Transport (FUNAABOT) has performed below expectations despite millions of naira allotted and allocated to the department for the purchase and renovation of MANCOTS but all went down the drain. Those monies remain carpeted till this moment.

“Again! I read in the News that the Vice-Chancellor of Funaab wrote to the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) that they are free to arrest students found wanting and guilty of cybercrimes.

“I would have said it was a good move not until I became a victim and also received report of the arrest and detention of innocent students who were unjustly Harrassed , Extorted and Brutalized.

“This is what you get when people who if managing a poultry, would make sure eggs are stolen, are given a University to manage.

“It is rather unfortunate that we have accepted the sad reality that relegates our ‘scholars’ to chasers of political appointments – people who are ready to lick butts to be made INEC returning officers, Political Aides, VCs , Directors, Deans and even Head of Departments.”

Angered by Ifemosu’s open letter on Facebook, the young man had his studentship terminated by the Senate of the university.

In his letter of expulsion signed by the Registrar, Dr Bola Adekola, the university confirmed that it expelled the student for writing an open letter on Facebook to the Vice Chancellor of FUNAAB.

The expulsion letter, which was received by Ifemosu on Friday, reads:

“You would recall that in July 2019, you posted an open letter on the Internet to the Vice Chancellor of the school in which you raised allegations and misrepresentation of fact about the university.

“At the Student Disciplinary Committee meeting held on August 29, 2019, you were invited for the purpose of giving you fair hearing on the allegation of an act perpetrated through the Internet, that is inimical to the integrity and corporate image of the university.

“You would also recall that during the interaction, you took full responsibility for the publication and were unable to substantiate any of the allegations raised in your letter against the management and staff of the university.

“Senate at its 217th Statutory Meeting held on Thursday, October 17, 2019, considered the report of the Student Disciplinary Committee on the allegation and thus decided that you have been found culpable of insubordination to university officials, defamation of character and act perpetrated through the Internet that is inimical to the integrity and corporate image of the university based on the extant rules and regulations on penalties for various offenses by students of the university.

“Consequent upon the decision of Senate, you’re hereby expelled from the university as provided for the offenses committed by you.

“You should surrender all university properties in your possession including the university identity card to the Dean, Student Affairs.”

“Henceforth, you are not allowed to enter the university campus without a prior written approval of the Registrar. The University Chief Environment officer is by a copy of this letter instructed to strictly prevent you from entering the campus forthwith.”

I will want us to get some facts right before we take sides here........The onus of defense lies on the student to defend his allegations ......going by the letter withdrawing his studentship...he was invited to a disciplinary meeting where he could have defended himself but I guess much of his allegations were based on hearsay....and since he couldn't substantiate his claims.....he got axed from the school

I didn't see the tyranny or high-handedness here.

He was expelled for making unsubstantiated allegations. He blatantly accused the authority of diverting funds. I mean, he wrote that lecturers all over the world were researching to save the world while FUNAAB lecturers were licking butts for political appointments. He even demeaned the office of the Vice Chancellor as a political appointment gotten through butt licking. These are allegations that are hard to prove which was why he could not substantiate his allegations when the Disciplinary Committee invited him to a meeting for the purpose of giving him a fair hearing.

Bro, have you been before a Nigerian university disciplinary committee for a fair hearing before, or you know someone who has? It's usually you against the country, you won't even see breathing space and your case would have been pre-decided, except you have someone there to fight on your behalf. Public education system in Nigeria is messed up with all the shades of wrong.

He obviously does not have any proofs. If he had, he would never have been expelled.

Afrika and many other SU leaders in the 80s and 90s did far more than this guy, although with much more wisdom and experience.

Afrika and others even accused a whole VC of providing support to cultists. They did not just accuse the VC as this particular guy did. They provided evidences of times when bad elements were expelled only to be reinstated through the backdoor and frolicking with Omole (the then VC).

If this guy had any evidence, the school would not have dared expel him just like that.

He has no evidence. He should have stuck to running commentaries on issues that every student, present and past, could easily corroborate.

For instance, more than 5 people that I know have also talked about the transportation issue and the police harassment.

These are the issues he should have chased. He should have learnt how the likes of Soyinka did it during their own time.

You are illiterate pure and simple.
I am not suggesting that you can't recognize individual words but the meaning are beyond your understanding.

If your chairman keeps budgeting millions every year and nothing to show for it.
It is within your rights to ask questions, be angry and even assume that the money is going elsewhere.

Fortunately, the letter is open for all to read and this hero was even more considerate by refusing to call the VC
the outright thief that he is.

This young hero didn't behave like the many cowards we have here.
He identified a problem, place the blame with its lies and proffered solution.

It is possible that you still don't get it but I can help you much further.

Well, I wasn't trained to exchange words with daft punks like you. Your gullibility and ability to consistently stick to wrong approach of right questions is appealing.
Sheybi he has insulted the VC and School management and they have handed to him an expulsion letter.
Only if we can learn to do things the right way - maybe this country will be better than this.

He has the right to ask questions, be angry, but placing allegations where there is no evidence is so damm wrong - that was the fish bone that stuck to his throat.
Assuming he has intelligently and with all sense of wittiness call out the necessary quarters, there won't be anything to tie him down with.

Battles are not won the way you're stupidly fighting yours on NL, you don't even have a stable income not to talk of employing the young boy now that he's at home. Just stick to your NL e-warrior business. It will soon pay off.

Just let the matter rest. The guy was rude, and deserved what he got.

For one thing, he didn't think the letter through. He could not even stay on a point, and he was all over the place. At a point, it appeared like he was calling out the management over misappropriation of funds, then he dabbles into sycophancy of the staff for political posts.

Here is one of the many unnecessary parts of his post which had/has no bearing on an open letter that ought to draw attention to the transportation and police harassment plaguing the school:

How do you expect a Professor who has received over 50 million dollars in grants from Bill Gates Foundation to be hustling to be a Vice-Chancellor, Dean or Director so he can start siphoning monies? He is busy of course! But right here in Funaab, it is the best thing that can happen to a Professor. He/She would celebrate God’s faithfulness as he/she now has unfettered access to public funds.

These are very serious accusations against every professor (even the good ones) of FUNAAB.

From the write-up: the bad English, the open insults and the unnecessary grandiose, it is very evident that he is a learner. Even activism is an act that needs to be patiently and thoroughly learnt before practice.

Next time, he should make a plan for what he hopes to achieve, and stay on the plan. You want to write an open letter to the VC stating your displeasure with the transportation and police harassment issues. You want to make sure you state only events that can be easily corroborated.

You don't need to keep educating people like Xisnin on how activism is done.
They think the moment you take your pen and write "Buhari is mad for closing borders" then you're a hero.
Let him go and read about Activists (dead or alive) and how they've called out governments and organizations bigger than them, yet still praised by the public.
Calling out is a nice thing but how you do it matters a lot. (even enemies respect their selves)

Yet another keyboard warrior who wants to teach real activists the right way to "go about it".

This particular hero does not live in fear like you do.
He doesn't want to go about it your way.

Come to think of it, you have supposedly read about activists both alive and dead, yet you have never stood
for anything with your name and face attached. Worse still, you are angry that a student attempted to change
the status quo. Isn't your alleged knowledge a waste?

From your post, you actually know nothing about activism but you want to tell activists how to behave.
FYI, there is no method to activism.
