Eleven persons have died of the 400 cases of gastroenteritis recorded in Lagos State.

According to the state Commissioner for Health, Prof Akin Abayomi, the rising number of gastroenteritis cases is due to flooding in some parts of the state.

In a statement, Abayomi said gastroenteritis cases had been reported in some local government areas, particularly in Surulere, Mushin, Ajeromi and Lagos Island since mid-October.
He, however, said the situation was under control as a result of the policies and interventions already put in place by the state government.

Of the 400 cases reported so far, the commissioner said “370 of these cases have been treated and discharged.”

He said, “Unfortunately, we have also recorded 11 deaths due to the outbreak. The increase in the number of cases of gastroenteritis is not unconnected with persistent rain with flooding of some local government areas in the state.
“We have been able to send some samples to our laboratories and some of those samples tested positive for a type of cholera but we are not sure whether cholera is responsible for the entire outbreak of diarrhoea and vomiting.”

Abayomi further said the state Ministry of Health would send other samples to other laboratories for in-depth analysis “to see whether this is just a case of cholera or whether there are other pathogens or agents contributing to this outbreak.”
The commissioner also cautioned against the spread of misleading information about the disease outbreak and asked the residents to disregard any news about the disease that did not emanate from official channels.

This year rain as caused so many damage in Lagos,my concern is what is the government doing to prevent future occurances. Wonder what will happen in the next 2 years if nothing serious is done to channel water properly.

I think general cleanliness and sanitation will go a long way to prevent a re-ocurrence. Also, construction of drainages, and prevention of dumping of dirt into drainages, will also help in this regard.
The deaths were avoidable. Nigeria/Nigerians should be proactive rather than reactive.
May God give us good leaders and followers in this country.

And, may we all live to witness the end of this year in goodness of Health and soundness of minds.

Ahhh.....hunger plus disease out break na die oh....and nothing will be done till the number of casualties escalate

There has to be more proactivity from the government and citizens of Lagos state....RIP to the deceased.

A lot of the inner streets in Lagos, especially areas where flood waters entered people's homes is quite disgusting. Gutter water where people piss in, brush their teeth into and throw all manner of dirt into, will still enter into someone's home.

Worse still, is when one has to wade through such muck to either get to work or go visit someone. The situation is terrible and such kind of diseases should be expected.

Also, the government might need to reduce or ban plastic waste in Lagos and other flood prone states; pure water nylon, take away packs, bottled water cans....nah these things full all Lasgidi gutters sha.

The government is taking global warming lightly. How can it rain almost back to back in October and no one is shaking body.

These old men in government are they waiting for the Whites to come to their aid?

Give us good roads and good drainage system so that things like this will not pop out.

Apart from this illness, reptiles that come with the flood is also a threat to our lives.

So much for center of excellence. Even my village has better drainage system.

To say rest in peace could be the right word, but in some dead, no rest.

Too bad . With all the goings , some diseases outbreak are still killing innocent struggling people .. Ministry of environment need to really work harder so as to prevent reoccurrence next year .

Another thing is , how did they come to the conclusion that it’s gastroenteritis when samples have just been sent to the lab for test of possible cholera outbreak .

Good drainage system that will greatly reduce flooding in Lagos, might require the demolition of at least 15% of the houses in Lagos. This is because most of these houses are built along drainage channels.

Food safety cannot be overemphasized. People should always wash their hands at all times especially schools for children.
