The Eastern region was under the absolute control of Ojukwu when Awolowo was released from Calabar prison, as a matter of fact there was near total severance of all forms of Federal presence and control in the East as Ojukwu simply refused to recognize the government of Gowon... with these simple facts in context, how the fucck could Gowon have secured the release of Awolowo from the East without Ojukwu( the Military governor of the East, and by all standards the only Rebel figure at the time) getting involved? stop boring is with these revisionist tales already you mo.ron.

Who gives a ratass about what the goofy dude said about the release of Awolowo. A man who could not stand with his fellow Oodua brother in Brigadier Ogundipe who would have been the head of state in the absence of Ironsi as Ojukwu had equally insisted. Instead RA Adebayo cowardly bowed to a junior office and tuned into butt leaker of all times . Have you seen where an ordinary police Sargent is giving orders to a police Inspector?

Is Gowon the glory-hunter expected to deny that he released Awolowo?

Is Adebayo a yoruba man expected to accept that the East which was a no-go area for Gowon released Awo, who later went on a war of attrition and campaign of genocide on the East. It will make yoruba look like the worst scums of earth?

But regardless it remains the truism. No ruler can unilaterily release a prisoner in area he has no authority.

Gowon had no authority in the East at that time, they never took orders from him, he was not even recognised in the East, the East released Awo.

Stop twisting facts.

How a people are bent on claiming that colour white is black and still go on to argue about amazed me.

I've read Awo's books, he lived for 17 years after war but couldn't bring himself to write that Gowon unilaterily released him, despite being a former journalist, lawyer, politician and above all an avid writer. The man must have battled with his conscience and how he would have lost credibility for telling an obvious lie.

Can you please provide one source that claimed Gowon don’t have authority over the eastern region 6 days after the counter coup by the northern military officers?

The Coup that killed Ironsi is July 29th 1966right?

Gowon released Awolowo in August 4th 1966 right?

Can you give just one source to claim Ojukwu had control of the eastern region just 6 days after the counter coup that killed Ironsi.

How would anyone say Gowon did not superintend over Nigeria after the counter coup of July 29, 1966.

Ironsi came to power as a result of the first coup that killed other regions leaders in January 1966 which was far more bloody and yet he still ruled as the Nigeria head of state over all regions.

How then will any sane thinking person say Gowon that came in as a result of a counter coup do not have power over the Eastern region Government just 5 days after the coup!

Fela sang so many songs how come he never sang that IBB released him?

It is a matter of public knowledge who released Obasanjo from prison he does not need to write it in any books

The real question is Why would Ojukwu release him AT THAT Specific moment?

Why would the killing and overthrow of Ironsi cause Ojukwu to release Awo within 5 days. Why? To what end?

Help me also ask him why Ojukwu had to wait for over one year before he could declare Biafra when he was already in control of the Eastern region 5 days after the coup as the guy wanted us to believe.

I don’t know who gave children phones.

He said he read lot of books about Awolowo. I asked him to provide me the book name and I will ask him some of the section of the book.

He has been researching online since coz it’s evident he ain’t replying. He should keep on searching and I am sure he won’t be able to lay his hand on the book online except he tries purchasing them on the bookstore.

It was a regional government with a good dose of regional autonomy (isn't that what you all are now clamouring for today), first there was the anti-Eastern massacre in may, there was a countercoup where many Eastern officers have been killed in July 66 which produced Gowon who was junior to Brig. Ogundipe.

Ojukwu the Eastern military Governor insisted that the military hierrachy be preserved, and made it clear he would not recognize Gowon, under military doctrine do leaders take orders from a superior they don't recognize?

Calabar was in the Eastern region under Ojukwu's command. Which means the prison officers and administators of Calabar province took orders directly from Ojukwu their leader not Gowon. Whether Gowon made a pronouncement or not was immaterial, he was illegitimate simple and short.

These are glaring facts in history books, but you can go on to skip these parts because you don't agree with it. But the world knows better.

Exactly and more importantly why would he do that at that specific time
Things were still developing and Ojukwu had not even challenged the authority or legitimacy of Gowon and the new regime

So if we are to believe he did it then it must have been really incredible foresight on his part which makes absolutely no sense when you consider that he did not meet Awo after the release for photo ops and propaganda

The reality is that Gowon issued the order and it was obeyed

What kind of ridiculous statement is this?

Why can’t a military government release a prisoner jailed by the federal government?

Is there any constitutional backing to your statement? Was Awolowo jailed by Ojukwu in the first place? And why should Gowon ask for orders from Ojukwu before releasing Awo from the calabar Prison?

Also can you give me a source to back your claims?

On the side note:
You said you have read almost all Awo books and he never mentioned about his release from jail.

Please list out all the Awo books you’ve read, I will ask you some question from certain chapters from any of the book and I want you to reply me.

5 days later

All that discussion about hierarchy ,recognition and so on was to come much later and was not immediately relevant

One may debate about whether Ojukwu had the means/wherewithal to STOP the release which is a very different thing from saying Ojukwu released him and then TAKING CREDIT for the release or claiming to have MADE THE DECISION to release

It is like a defender saying he had the opportunity to foul a striker before he scored and by not fouling him he ALLOWED him to score and so takes credit for the goal

The regional governors were military. Look at your fist sentence above "SUPREME MILITARY COUNCIL"!

The order from the Supreme Commander trumps and overrules any other standing regional order. If it wasnt Ironsi's decree 34 would have been meaningless and void.

Gowon was the one that released awo and his notable followers from prison.by so doing,he (Gowon) greatly contrasted himself with ojukwu and ironsi And made himself more acceptable to the remainder of Nigeria.but it was ojukwu Who unilaterally released all the officers and men that were detained in the east for their part in the 1st coup.Nzeogwu and co"

Ojukwu was foolish.

Gowon used the services of all surviving first republic Politicians to his advantage. He gave them seats at his Council and they served as Advisors and Strategists to him.

Awolowo, and the rest of them.

Ojukwu on the other hand, either placed first republic politicians from East on House Arrests, or simply ignored him.

Even Danjuma was thrilled to the Press when he recaptured the home of Aja Nwachuku and wondered WHY Ojukwu would place a former Ambassador to UN on house arrest.

Zik and the rest of them who could influence world powers and provide advise were also ignored.

In the end, it was Awo strategy of using the SS and banning food import that helped Nigeria win the war.

What pride and over-confidence can cause.

It is funny how desperate your argument is

It was a new government that came to power by COUP .
They ruled BY DECREE

They could do whatever they liked and THEY DID

The governors were all APPOINTED by the Commander in Chief and were subordinate

Nnamdi Kanu will forever be rich coz he will continue to have a lot of sub-optimal brain humans to brainwash.

Let me cure you of your innate ignorance and you should accept my words and replies as a service to humanity.

Firstly, Gowon released Awolowo in August 4, 1966. That is almost a year before the Biafra war started.

Lieut Col. Gowon was the head of state of Nigeria at that time and he superintended over all the lands and seas of Nigeria in 1966 including the eastern region.

If you had a normal IQ, you would have known that Awolowo was a federal prisoner. Had it been Ojukwu released him from prison, he would have been picked up by the federal troops the moment he set his foot in Lagos. To give you an example, If Ikpeazu releases Nnamdi Kanu from prison in Abia, won’t the FG police and DSS arrest Kanu the moment he sets his foot in Abuja?

Also, Biafra war started in July 1967, that is only the time when Ojukwu has maximum control of the defunct eastern region. If Awo was released during this time, then we would have said Ojukwu masterminded his release.

I have tried my best to educate you, if you still remain adamant after this, then your case is beyond redemption!

honestly, you plagiarised my mind undiluted

Why should there be a military signal?
When Obasanjo was released tell us the governor who gave the military signal. That was even a military regime
Was Awo a soldier?
Awo was convicted of Treason. A federal offence and was in a Federal Prison
He was not jailed by a military court

Prisons are not part of the military and so all that talk of military signal is twaddle

Federal Prisons have a different hierarchy under a Comptroller and are not under state governors ditto the Customs,Immigration and other paramilitary forces etc.
