This thing has been debated non-stop for years since Ojukwu said he was the one that released Awo. Unfortunately all the people (Gowon and co) who have been speaking contrary to Ojukwu's statement did not start talking about it until AFTER OJUKWU DIED... Gowon has also not written a book or memoirs for us to read and scrutinise.

My honest opinion is that the release of Awo would have been of huge PR benefit to Gowon/FG and Ojukwu. Yes Ojukwu did not recognise the government of Gowon but would have happily played along with the release if Gowon requested it and there was definitely no chance of Awo being released without Ojukwu's knowledge, it just doesn't work that way.

As HOS Gowon should have sacked Ojukwu. He didn't and couldn't do it. So please spin another fairy tale for zombies like you.

All the things you wrote up here is just based on speculations and you have not cited any credible sources to back your claim.

I released sources both video, pictures and papers from: New York Times, Reuters, Britishpathe, and Premium Times to back my claims that Gowon released Awolowo.

Can you please cite one credible source to back your claim that Ojukwu did instead?

Did Ojukwu declared secession from Nigeria 5 days after the counter coup such that the supreme military council won’t have any power over the eastern region.

Is there any presence of Nigeria soldiers that are Yorubas, Hausas, Edos, Fulanis in the Eastern region 5 days after the coup or not?

Do you know Gowon still held a national conference with the eastern region government representing like the other regions also do in Lagos later that year?

Ojukwu became a rebel in 1967, not 1966 that Awo was released. He was not treated as a rebel in 1966 until he declared Biafra in 1967. Stop sounding dumb.

Now who released Awolowo? Ojukwu or Gowon? Ojukwu was asked this question in an interview he granted Rudolph Okonkwo in 2001 and this was Ojukwu's answer

"We’ve said this over and over again, so many times, and people don’t understand; they don’t want to actually. If you remember, I released Awolowo from jail. Even that, some people are beginning to contest as well. Awo was in jail in Calabar. Gowon knows and the whole of the federal establishment knows that at no point was Gowon in charge of the East. The East took orders from me. Now, how could Gowon have released Awolowo who was in Calabar? Because of the fact that I released him, it created quite a lot of rapport between Awo and myself and I know that before he went back to Ikenne, I set up a hotline between Ikenne and my bedroom in Enugu"


What people dont realise is that after the overthrow of Ironsi, Ojukwu some others never actually recognized Gowon as head of state. In fact, all of the members of the supreme military council of Ironsi were all senior to Gowon with the exception of Lt Col Hassan Katsina. It would take another 6 months before Ojukwu and other Regional Military Governors met with Gowon in Aburi Ghana where Ojukwu formerly recognized Gowon as head of state in return for keeping to the Aburi agreement.

Ojukwu not only released Awolowo, he released others like Nzeogwu, Victor Banjo, Ifeajuna and all those who participated in the January 1966 coup.

So it was not possible for Gowon to have released Awolowo, even if he had wanted to, as Gowon leadership was not recognised in the Eastern Region where Awolowo was in jail
