No need toto panic. It is a day case and can only be surgically removed and the patient goes home same day. The surgery is a minor type done under anaesthetic infiltration with xylocaine. It grows. Remember it is a a benign tumour of the fat cells, there is a <0.001% chance of transforming to liposarcoma(a malignant type). I personally will suggest u leave the child alone and it is a painless growth.
I personally have removed so many but mainly in the adults.

The best thing is to remove it surgically, so it doesn't constitute any cancerous cell in the future. It's not a major operation and this is the best time to do it except you make sure you consult a renowned clinic or hospital.

While you're afraid because your baby is still tender, you should also be thankful it's not the case of hydrocephalus or you having to witness a catheter being passed into your baby. When you are in a hospital and witness a catheter being connected to a few months old baby, you would look around and have reasons to be thankful in life.

Leave op, let him be worried about surgery. My Lil one just passed thru open heart surgery. These kids are stronger than we think. Parents are just overly emotional about them being poked always.

I found a small ball-like growth in my baby’s neck underneath the flesh. Took him to the hospital but the doctor says he has LIPOMA and would require surgery to remove it.

My baby is just barely a year and six months and I’m worried taking him through surgery at this young age.

Doctors and medical practitioners in d house pls help. Is there any other remedies to remove lipoma or must it be surgery?

Note: I asked another doctor in same hospital but he seem to think surgery should be best.
Personally I wanna be sure if that’s my only options pls.

Mods, pls assist. I need help here.

Come to Syd monic hospital, no 6 alh moshobalaje street, Ali Dada bus stop, Ago palace way, Ago Okota, Lagos tomorrow to register the boy for the five day free medical and surgical services event ending tomorrow. Over 30 lipoma and excision biopsy surgeries have been done since the event started on monday, over 25 Fibroid removal surgeries done so far, over 10 hernia and undescended surgeries done too. All successful so far.
Check the hospital page on fb to confirm.
Note- program ends tomorrow. Come register him and get the surgery done tomorrow. Don't be a doubting Thomas

The major reason people remove lipomas are is because of aesthetics, they don't want any form of deformity. That surgery is no emergency but if yiu want to go ahead with it please go ahead with a general surgeon or a reputable surgeon to prevent complications. Avoid quacks.

Please see a paediatric surgeon preferrably.Lipoma is less likely in such age group though its a differential.A neck ultrasound scan first is prudent.The doctor might order a FNAC or a core biopsy, so you know what exactly you are dealing with before excision is done.Cystic hygroma,thyroglossal cyst,branchial cyst,lymphocele,lymphagioma etc are possibilities.

Your child need to undergo a test known as fine needle aspiration cytology to confirm the nature of the tumour , if confirm that it is a Lipoma which is a benign tumour, then ensure that it is removed.

It's not serious so you should leave it at least until the baby is like 5yrs old. The surgery is not a guarantee as it may still return then would you do the surgery again?

Have it on my hand and did the surgery (it's a minor surgery for an adult) and it still came back. For a baby, they would have to put him totally under instead of it being just a local anaesthetic. So, it is a serious surgery for a baby but a routine one for an adult. Please know that surgery comes with a lot of risks.

Your choice at the end of the day.

Lipoma is nothing to worry about. My advice would be for you to hold on for now; reason being that lipoma sometimes had a tendency to grow back again. What you see now may or may not be the full extent of the growth, but my prayer is that it is.
Allowing more time, perhaps years more will give you time to see if it increases in size or not.
If the growth is not pressing against any sensitive organ, you may leave it till he's older. Absolutely nothing to worry about.
You should however share my thought with you on this with the Doctor, preferably a dermatologist; it's there specialty.

Relax your mind. Lipoma is not a big issue. I removed mine a few months ago. The procedure was not up an hour.
I understand your concern though.

It's just a minor surgery. Do it now, your child can't appreciate it now but in the future. You don't want any scar that will make your child less confident when he is an adult.

don't ever think u are wiser than anyone and mind u, u don't know everything. doctors are professionals but they only try but God heals. they are tyms u get better cure/advice outside professionals. advise from victims are mostly better even by far

Lipoma; they say is the accumulation of cells in a particular spot.
It's not painful and actually grows. I had one removed two years ago. Removal is done through a minor procedure. It is necessary to remove esp if its positioned at a visible spot. If not properly done, regrowth is possible.
Let the docs remove it.

I doubt if it's lipoma, in such a young child, very rare in children.
Get an ultrasound it's more likely a branchial cyst or cystic hygroma .
See a paediatric surgeon.
Surgery in children is safe

A child who is that young, there are many possible other causes of neck swelling in children that could easily be mistaken for lipoma.
A neck lump at that age is unlikely to be a lipoma, chances are it would more likely be any of the other conditions I have mentioned below .

Some stuffs like if it's painful, if it was there from birth, if it's been increasing in size, etc could guide the diagnosis and treatment.

It very well could be a lymph node swelling, an abscess (collection of pus), a cyst (fluid filled), etc.
The type of swelling would inform the treatment. If its a lipoma then taking it out would be the definite treatment but it may not be something to do now as we would usually wait till the child is well grown before considering a removal.

My advise to you : get it scanned first to confirm the diagnosis.

Secondly, even when you are trying to feel it, it’s difficult except you pay attention and touch it properly, as it’s just a small ball inside d neck skin

Thirdly it doesn’t hurt. He doesn’t scratch or even touch it. Most likely doesn’t realize it’s there.

I noticed it on my baby's neck when he was 2wks old(imagine). Thank God I observed it earlier because I noticed it the day my MIL left. I was playing with him n saw it. I took him to hospital d following day n he was giving 4 strong different antibiotics which will last for two weeks. unfortunately it was there after two wks n was was referred to general hospital for surgery. surgery for 2wks baby I went traditional n applied what was given to me time to time. I was told that it will either disappear or bring out pores. what I noticed was that my baby cried whenever I applied it. i cld remember palm oil was part of it.To God be the glory I did not know when it disappeared. my son is 7 yrs nw.

I am not a doctor but I know lipoma is not such a serious issue and it's correctable at any age. I suggest the surgery would even be better done now that your child os still a minor

Maybe this might b different from d one I suffered sometimes ago, it was a swell beneath d skin according to d OP, mine was painful, body hotness, I went to hospital then and was given some medications but unfortunately I cudnt bear d persistent pain so I travelled to village 4 local treatment. Hope it different from ur lil baby

Then it could very well be any of the possibilities I mentioned, especially a cyst.
You need to get it scanned to have a definite diagnosis.
No one would put a surgical blade to a toddler nay an adult because of an inconspicuous 'lipoma'.
If you're concerned, get it scanned ffs.

No hurry to remove it, it is benign and does no harm (provided the diagnosis is sure). Lipoma is due to accumulation of fatty tissue. It doesn’t hurt him so you could leave it as long as you want. Most times it is removed surgically for cosmetic reasons, or when it becomes painful or the rate of growth is really fast.
In modern day, fetus are even operated in the womb weeks before delivery. Age should not be taken too serious, it is a minor surgery and it is done with local anesthesia.
Don’t let people fool you, or try to dupe you.
I’m a an orthopedic surgeon. My personal advice is for you to just keep observing it. If it becomes painful, grows really fast or you observer a rapid change in aspect, then you can opt for biopsy, scan or outright surgery (after which the content should be sent to a pathologist). No need to have restless nights. I know many doctors in Nigeria tend to be desperate to do even unnecessary surgeries just to make money.
