How Should I Have Answered This Interviewer's Question? by MisterJeph(m): 8:11am On Nov 29, 2019
Hello Nairalanders.

I attended an interview yesterday, it wasn't my first interview but it was the first time a question caught me off guard. I was always prepared before interviews and do my research on the hiring company. But yesterday, when the interviewer asked me; "are you creative?, (I would have just answered yes, and he would have asked me what creative things I've done) my brain went blank for a second and I started looking for a suitable answer.

Don't get me wrong, I have creative ideas, but have I really done something creative? I can act, write plays, but my guess was the interviewer wanted my answer to be in line with the position I was applying for, so I started fumbling for the right answer, after a while uneasiness began to appear on the face my interviewer, apparently I was wasting too much time on this one question. So I let out only thing bouncing up and down in my mind; "I can act sir, if knowing how to act counts as being creative".

I was applying for a bank job for crying out loud, not auditioning for a movie role. How does acting correlate with banking?

Over to you guys. How should I have done justice to the question?

Nairaland is filled with Sadists, haters and Nazists, go to Quora, twitter, Instagram, Reddit it's totally different from this place.
This forum is unique in a negative way.

Spot On! It's getting annoying and crazy, you will log out of twitter to nairaland and meet the same news, but different comments, while the twitter comments are always sensible and positive. The nairaland comments are always the positive. Like this place is a breeding ground for tribalists and illiterates.

Rule number 1
Never say you can't. If you must, give an alternative.

When being hired, you are seen as a solution giver, why should you give me the impression you are not up to the task?

An engineer once told me in our field, "Victor when you're on site, you're the God of that site make everything work and give no excuses".

Bosses want to know that if they can touch the helm of your garment they are made whole. And if you can't, you can at least refer one who can make them whole.

Creativity in life is transferable, if you're very creative as an actor you'd have equally been very creative as an architect. Because you dig down the uncommon parts of your brain. You utilize your brain way more than others. So once you are and you know you are, you should have told him YES!!!

This is a large forum with all kinds of people so it's not surprising. The Nigerian behaviour is also a factor.

However, there are still many sensible people/posts here.
I stopped focusing on the negative comments and trolls here a long time ago.

So you can decide to focus on the positives. Start by avoiding the Romance and Politics section.

If you can't, just...

Being creative is nothing more than bringing new ideas to the table. Whether in acting, singing, even in banking operations and marketing.
Answer like, "Yes I think I am creative in different aspects. I can bring bring new ideas, and new ways to solving problems and taking on challenges".
This short and simple answer is enough and I dont think the interviewer will have any more question on that regard after you drop this answer. Goodluck to you and hopefully the best job is yet to come your way.
I remember back then 2006 I went for Finbank interview and I was denied the job cos the guy asked me who the deputy Governor of Delta state was. Like what da fu*ck? I knew it was Ada... something but since I couldn't mention her name in full, the guy bounced me, worst is, I am not even from Delta state for that matter. Life have been kind to me afterwards. So learn, clean ur hands when you fall and move on.

Being creative in the banking industry could entail something like...
1) your ability to create new patterns of doing usual businesses... E.g.. creating a new way to attend to customers in the customer care service so as to ensure prompt service delivery
2) your ability to market products to potential customers in a UNIQUE way..e.g using your acting techniqes

First say yes of course with a smile while buying your brain 10 extra seconds
When you're asked in what way? Answer in many ways (extra 3seconds)
For example: blah blah blah (whatever answers your smart brain has cooked up)

While every interviewer has something in mind, they most likely want to see traces of being able to do your job effectively and being able to do swift troubleshoot when the need arises.

While there's no wrong answer per se, a smart answer should tell how good you are at creating quick fixes to resolve crises or an example of how you broke routine in a good way at a time of need.
Crises could be unusual customer conflict, inter-staff conflicts etc.
A creative person is very calculative, sees ahead and knows how to smartly avert danger.

Hope u understand

We Nigerians, because of our insecurities always waste time thinking about why the person asked a question before we answer.
A simple question that would need a frank answer would see us acting suspicious

Most of us are guilty, like it or not
For instance,
"where are you?" (on the phone). I bet you can't answer it right under 5 secs

What is your name? (what does he want with my name), ends up giving a fake name

How old are you? Ah, don't even go there especially the ladies

I think the aspect of creativity is an open one in this case unless if by chance you mention in your CV you had a previous banking experience. Anyways you can joggle round anything astonishing and outstanding you have done anywhere and anytime on any job then create a link of how such creative mind of yours will help give innovative ideas to the growth of the company

Your first answer would have been yes like you thought, then go on to tell them how you have created an idea of how to make a movie better than it was planned and it went down well. From your response, they would have probably asked how you are gonna bring your creative skills into their bank and what you will do differently. Creativity comes in different folds, you had the chance to sell yourself to them, you said you already researched about them (products and services) meaning, you know what they and their competitors do and should have cooked up something to tell them smartly before going there.
